John O’Callaghan is an Irish DJ, producer and label owner who’s active in the music scene for many years already. He’s known for productions and collabs under various project names and he did remixes for big names such as Armin van Buuren, Solarstone, Giuseppe Ottaviani, Cosmic Gate, The Thrillseekers, Gareth Emery, Lange and many, many others.
For this vlog I sat down with John to ask him about the story behind his classic “Big Sky”. A track he did together with singer / songwriter Audrey Gallagher. “Big Sky” came out with a massive remix from Agnelli & Nelson and it even became to Tune Of The Year at the end of 2007 in Armin van Buuren’s radio show “A State Of Trance”.

A bit of history about this track too. When Armin was voted number 1 in DJ Mag for the first time in 2007, his very next gig was Monster Massive 2007. He opened up his set with Big Sky. First track played as number 1 DJ.

He's a legend, remember seeing him playing in a tiny business unit in Middlesbrough. It had a portaloo outside the front, i was thinking what the hell is he doing playing here. one of the best nights of my life

I used to chat with him a fair bit on the old Tranceaddict producer forums back in the day. I was one of the other Reason users at the time (Used to go under the name of Bren-F ) Always great to see one of the old gang there doing well! There was so much talent on that forum back in the day, John, Bryan Kearney, Neal Scarborough, MK-S, Endre, Robert Nickson, Airbase, Magdelayna, Orkidea and loads other. Also nice to see how humble he still is, giving credit where it is due! Great video, Twan!

Fantastic interview Twan. John seems super chilled and humble. It's interesting to hear him say he spends several months on a track vs other interviews you have done where they say the tracks were made in a few hours.

I interviewed JOC for my University magazine in 2009. I asked him who he wanted to collaborate with. Even then he stated he wanted to work with Jes. So I can attest to his sentiments in regards her being top of his music 'bucket list'.

I remember first time seeing John. It was 2008 on an event called 'See Me with... Beck's' at Sofia, Bulgaria. Back then as a small trance group we went there hoping to hear the ASOT tune of the year 'Big Sky'. And we heard it, also had pictures with John. Sweet memories.

John was a huge favourite of the Matt Hardwick forum that I had the pleasure of running. I've a lot of those old CDRs too - John would send them to me to roadtest in clubs and give him feedback on. Probably loads of great ideas in there that never saw the light of day.

Great interview. Very detailed and descriptive. I enjoyed it. Good to know that JOC was like an apprentice to Agnelli & Nelson. JOC is a cool, humble person. I have had a pleasure to meet him a couple of times. He makes a good variety of tunes and his sets are impeccable especially, the Total Spectrum ones.

What a great interview man! Really glad to see your channel growing and getting the attention it deserves. Top job as always, I don't know how you do it, but you get so much story and detail from these producers. Top top quality. I had kinda gone off trance for years in the mid 2000's and hearing Big Sky for the first time probably around 2012 re-ignited the passion (no pun intended lol).

Hey Twan, Awesome interesting interviews ! I really enjoy them. I have a request and idea for you. I think it would be super cool if you could interview Cosmic Gate with there track “Fire Wire” that was released .. I think back in 2001. Keep up the awesome interviews.

Thank you! And I don’t do requests tbh (check the pinned post on my FB page for more info!) but …. Cosmic Gate are on my (loooong) wish list for sure! Spoke to their manager last year about a possible interview, but due to the pandemic they haven’t really been in Europe much (they’re both living in the USA) and especially not in The Netherlands (where I’m based). We still don’t have any events here unfortunately, so let’s see what happens later this year. There’s at least 2 - 3 tracks I would love to interview them about. Fingers crossed!

@@muzikxpress that sounds great ! “The Drums” is another great one. I understand Twan, these years have been difficult for many of us. We must push forward, Let’s hope that interview can happen. Scot Project also comes to mind in the hard trance style. Fire Wire was the first track I was introduced in Hard Trance, then I didn’t know what this kind of music was. I would record on cassette back then and was definitely an interesting time period. All these amazing artists left and right would explode in these euphoric dj mixes. Happy new 2022 Twan and much more success for your awesome channel !!!

I don't do stories about remixes, only about originals ;-) I already reached out to Oliver Lieb a.k.a. L.S.G. a long time ago when I did a little trip to Frankfurt (for the interviews with Jam El Mar / Kai Tracid / Cygnus X / Thomas P. Heckmann). But he wasn't available then unfortunately.
