The Scottish poet Robbie Burns was born over 260 years ago on the 25th January.
Every year, Scots all over the world celebrate his birthday with a traditional Burns night supper of Haggis, neeps and tatties, all washed down with plenty of whiskey.
The haggis is traditionally brought in by a piper, and Burns' famous poem, Address to a Haggis, is recited over the dish, after which the haggis is ceremoniously sliced in two.
Never one to miss out on a good supper and a celebration, Michael Portillo went along to the Boisdale Scottish restaurant in London to meet Ranald MacDonald and discover the stories behind Burns Night.

Burns was a great poet, no-one can deny it, but the way he treated women was truly appalling. Having read about the fate of many of the young women he impregnated (mostly while he was in a relationship or marriage with Jean Armour), I find it hard to reconcile the nobility of his poems with the baseness of his personal life. The thing I do like about this video is the quote "Scotland inherited England". So true.

The Selkirk grace addressed to a haggis mashed up for those who are not great fans of it. Great chieftain of the pudding race Some would eat but want it But if that's the best you've got then ha guess let the Lord be thankit ps from the point of view of economy of energy and resources haggis is an admirable dish. Waste not want not

Hm. History a bit off here. After James II was usurped - the Jacobites - the crown did not go straight through to the Hanoverians. It remained with the Stuarts l, first with Mary (and William) and then Queen Anne, the last of the Stuarts who oversaw the creation of a united Great Britain.

Scots isn’t a dialect and it isn’t just found in the Lowlands.

Horrors!! In the introduction above it states " ...... all washed down with plenty of whiskey!" Rabbie would be turning in his grave! The Scottish spirit is WHISKY, not whiskey! Whiskey is an Irish or American spirit.

Ask an Englishman about Scotland and you get this phoney conversation. Sounds like he read everything he knows about Scotland from a book rather than real life! It's painful to hear considering I come from a small working class Scottish village that speaks Scots regularly in the household.

Think you’re missing the point: the well to do Scots are now English… enjoying both their heritage and the advantages of being south of the border.
