Dutchman Erik van Vliet is active in the music scene for a very long time already. During the years he has been a DJ, he did own 2 record shops and several record labels. Erik was the main man behind Hotsound Records, Stealth Records and Haunted House Records for example.
Besides that, he was part of many projects such as Low Atomic Style, Space Trax, Techno Grooves and Laserdance. For this episode of Muzikxpress I sat down with Erik, to talk with him about the Laserdance classic “Humanoid Invasion”, a massive Italo / synth pop classic which he did together with Michiel van der Kuy back in the year 1986.
But of course you will also hear how Erik started his impressive career, which well known DJs and producers used to work in his recordstore in Rotterdam and last but not least you will hear the story behind the succes of the act The Outhere Brothers on Erik's label Stealth Records!
Enjoy and thanks for watching!

Erik van Vliet was an icon for me! I fell in love with Laserdance at the end of the 80's. I bought all the records in Vlaardingen and still have them till today. I used Laserdance as an intro while I was a radio pirate (3 meter) as it was called. This was a brilliant episode in my life. Thanks so much to offer Erik this platform! He was really a legend in the 80's and early 90's!!!!!

There used to be a radioshow in Estonia in the 90s, where "Humanoid Invasion" was playing in the background for hours every day while the dj was italking and ntroducing new music. I think they played the song about 10'000 times during the show's entire run

Nice surprise, this interview! I met Erik in 2005 at the Collector's Fair in Utrecht, Holland for the first time. It was there I completed my Laserdance-collection with autographed copy's of some of the albums I was searching for at that time. Very nice guy! I first heard Laserdance sometime in late 1993/1994 when I heard Fire on Earth, maybe the best album they did in the '90s. Later I discovered the now legendary Future Generation-debut and Around the Planet, simply their best albums to date. When I heard they got back in 2016 with Force of Order, I was very happy! I hope we can see new Laserdance music in the near future. Keep up the good work Erik and thanks for this insightful interview!

In the mid 80's pirate radio around Rotterdam and The Hague played a lot of Italo disco which was populair at that time in that region. Laserdance blended in that scene perfectly. That's how I and many other people got to know his early music.

Yep Voice of Space edits. Early space disco. What we now call cosmic disco. But he did much more and i don't think this interview will cover it. But i think it should because it's part of history. I still don't like laserdance but i'm 47 now and was deep into disco from 2003 till now. And that's mostly because i'm weird guy. Loved his shops in the 90's though. Also he pressed records in Miami because everybody wanted imports here. Not a lot of people knew it was Erik. But that was the plan. And yes i think those bootleg medley mixes are documented in Disco Patrick's book. But he also did normal releases pressed in miami not to be connected directly to him i think. Anyway he inspired me with his business side of things ;) Anyway i'm at the start of this interview and must see it.

@@muzikxpress great response! Is it hard to get an interview with some producers? Whats the reason behind this. Could it be the more introverted, less outgoing personalities?
@muzikxpress
@muzikxpress 3 года назад
Some people say "yes" straight away, others are more difficult and some don't even reply.... I rather have them to say "no" so I can stop bugging them hehe..... But indeed, some people rather spend time in the studio instead of doing interviews, especially on camera. Some producers don't want to talk about their past / old productions and only want to focus on their current stuff, but my thing with Muzikxpress is to get the stories behind the big classics. Still very happy that I have a few interviews online with people that never really do interviews. I also think that this interview with Erik is (as far as I know) the only video interview that's online. And there's a few more on my channel (Felix, Cygnus X, Atlantic Ocean Hans Weekhout / Capricorn, Carlo Resoort, Ralphie B, Marcel Hol, Robert Smit etc). Working on some more interviews for later this year, but COVID doesn't make things easier tbh. Hope you enjoy the content on my channel! :)

@ΤάσοςΠισιμίσης-λ1μ
I didn't know him or his story, but now that i saw the interview, i realized that if he hadn't met Michael Van Der Kuy, for his Lazerdance project, and promoted him in his Stealth label as L.A Style (Low Atomic Style), then ''James Brown is Dead'' wouldn't had become, which in my opinion is the biggest and most successful techno track have ever been on earth. Erik van Vliet is partially responsible for the whole Dutch/Belgian techno movement in the early 90's, so i feel much respect for him. Why didn't you ask him about L.A Style or Stealth label? I don't care about italo disco or Lazerdance, and most people don't either. Sorry!
@muzikxpress
@muzikxpress Год назад
Let me correct you on a few things.... Michiel was NOT involved with "James Brown Is Dead". Low Atomic Style was Erik van Vliet & Wessel van Diepen (who unfortunately doesn't do interviews, I already asked him....). L.A. Style was Wessel and Michiel van der Kuy. So I did not ask Michiel about "James Brown Is Dead", simply because he has NOTHING to do with that track! Secondly, in case you missed it, all my 150 interviews are about a big hit from the past or a famous classic. That is the whole format of Muzikxpress and the idea behind my channel, so that is always the main focus when I do an interview. The reason why I picked "Humanoid Invasion" for the interview was because of the 35th anniversary of the track by the time I recorded and posted the interview. Plus it is one of the most well known tracks from the Laserdance project and a good reason to find out more about Michiel. I guess you also missed all the replies from people who really enjoyed the interview, since you said most people don't care about this.
@ΤάσοςΠισιμίσης-λ1μ
@muzikxpress OK. Sorry for my misunderstood. It wasn't my intention to reject the whole interview. You do a great job with all those interviews . The only thing i wanted to say is that because Michiel Van Der Kuy was the producer of L.A Style and also a part of Lazerdance, then Erik van Vliet would definitely remember the story of L.A Style, even if he isn't part of them and since L.A Style don't do interviews. I am an oldskool techno head (Belgian/Dutch techno-rave from 1991) so i desperately need to know the story behind L.A Style. I hope they will change their mind in the future for an interview.
@muzikxpress
@muzikxpress Год назад
@@ΤάσοςΠισιμίσης-λ1μ thank you! And I rather talk to the people that were actually involved with the making of the track. So hopefully Michiel will be up for it one day. For the next months my schedule is full, but he’s on my looooong wish list for sure. Fingers crossed! 🤞🏻😉
@KulBeens
@KulBeens 2 месяца назад
It would be big news to everyone to learn Michiel did not make James Brown Is Dead. In older interview Michiel said it was the biggest track he has ever made. Even his alias Denzil Slemming is listed in credits. I wonder if you meant to say Erik had nothing to do with making JBID. Also Erik did not mention all the Roland gear that was used on Laserdance. Preset baselines and synths are legendary Roland sounds on all Laserdance. Koto sound was switched up with Yamaha. Linndrum was used in early Laserdance and was replaced by Roland beats. Michiel has also confirmed this gear decades ago. And producers who have experience with Roland gear can confirm these sounds came from Roland.
@RutgerS.
@RutgerS. 3 года назад
Unfortunately no real in depth answers on the production process. Maybe Michiel was more involved technically. Definitely a trend setter though for the Dutch market. The Italian music, who doesn't like it. Giorgio Moroder, Mr. Flagio, but also the French Cerrone. Great disco music.
