Knowing that teens and adults across the world struggle with social anxiety on a daily basis, Vishruth details his experiences in an effort to empower viewers to overcome their anxiety in their own way. He explores not only how social anxiety roots itself inside a person, but also how it can unknowingly take control of a person’s behavior in both casual and professional situations. He then provides a framework that can be used to develop confidence when engaging with both close friends and new people alike. Vishruth Hanumaihgari is a junior at Parkland High School. Throughout his career, he has developed a strong interest in medicine and public speaking through his involvement in the debate team and various STEM initiatives, ranging from national science competitions to community projects, including his own student organization, Youth Against Cancer. He is dedicated to emboldening youth across the world by encouraging them to use their voices to initiate positive change in their communities, and he hopes his message will give them the confidence they need to, one day, share their own experiences with social anxiety. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

I just finished a group presentation in our french speaking class, even it was with a group of friends. Even it was well prepared. I still got red faced when i started to speak. The professor was so nice and she went to open the window to let fresh air in when she saw me got all red😂 😢 It was a presentation not so important and i was sure the professor will give us good notes, at the end i was able to relax as the conversation goes … but the begging was quiet embarrassing. i don’t understand why? Am i too sensible ? Too self centered ? I don’t speak often even with friends and family or at work or other occasions ! I don’t want to be judged, it is much easier just to hide and not get noticed. I didn’t realize this was one important factor that sabotages a lot my professional life and my personal life. How can i improve ? 😢 please help !

I'm glad to see you overcame it. I'm with thesame situation even until now that I'm 18, I was not socially awkward not until I developed it I think when I'm 13 years old. It's when I stayed at my room just by everyday the whole years and years, I don't go to any occasions even if it is exactly happening in our house, I do not go to party's that I once used to go to back when I am in elementary school, I always just stay at my room, I started to develop the pattern of overthinkings, being highly observant and sensitive over every details. I felt awkward communicating to people and I feel like I forgot how to communicate. It's when I am very conscious and don't know how to act when I am the center of attention. It makes me feel sad too as it affects my performance at school. I'm a consistent with honor student as my quizzes and Exams are alway high, what makes me feel sad is that I know I can push it more to with high honor only if I do not have social anxiety to recite, talk infront of the class, be an inspiring group leader and voice out my thoughts, all in all. I was stucked with this kind of environment all throughout my 5 years in high school from Grade 7 to 9 that is why it's hard for me to take a step into a new person even if I transferred school. But I am thankful since I atleast learned how to manage my social anxiety well in any situations as I learned it during this pandemic. So now that I am in Grade 12, I can atleast manage my social awkwardness but I still feel awkward being the center of attention, I still don't go to any occasions that is full of crowds, especially if it is filled with the people who knows me and from my village, my anxiety still got triggered from some things but I am trying to deal with them completely. I'm actually planning to enter Military Academy once I graduate from high school this 2023 to gain more skills in interpersonal communication, leadership and overcoming self-doubt. From Accountancy to Military lol. I guess that's just how life goes on as time passes, our choices and decisions will be affected by every circumstances we do not know we will encounter along the way. We can slay too! Introverts can slay too! We just need to find our courage and apply our learnings into action step-by-step. I will come back here once I passed the entrance examination.☺️ We can do it fellas! ❤️

My biggest concern is when they ignore what I'm about to say or interrupt me... That's why I don't speak a lot 😭

I think you never went through social anxiety. If went then it was very very subtle to even recognise it as anxiety.
