The Story of a Stolen Porsche 911 and the Belgrade Phantom

Who would steal a Porsche 911, successfully escape, and then announce their joyrides each night for days on end? It sounds like a forbidden fantasy to many car enthusiasts, but the Belgrade Phantom made it a reality in 1979, Yugoslavia.
If you want to learn more about this story, I'd recommend watching
"The Belgrade Phantom" (2009), directed by Jovan Todorović. This Serbian film pieces together reenactments, archived footage, and interviews to tell this incredible story.
A massive thank you to fellow Canadian Chris Doerkson (chrisdoerksen.bandcamp.com/), and my new favourite artist, Fred Mug (fredsounds.bandcamp.com/), for allowing use of their incredible music!

Whether his intentions was for sending a message for the people or he just did it for fun, he gave an unique message, and a message usually only people amongst the car community will understand: Driving through the limits gives a sense of freedom and euphoria. Good, yes, I will definitely agree. He absolutely put in far more effort than most people do to pronounce the words properly however I was a little bit disappointed with his pronunciation of the word "key" he pronounced it like "gluch' and it is more like "klutche" , other than that everything was excellent and I even feel like a jurk pointing that out haha
@minmogrovingstrongandhealthy
@@stanley1554 It's hard because many don't have ''lj'' and similar letters. However I LMAO so hard at the very start when I heard Zeroslavia. Which is ironically correct for the country since it banned original Slavic (Orthodox) and went with the Vatican's vabrications support of creating fake nations while in the big picture presenting them in a joint political brotherhood (brastvo jedinstvo), which worked only on paper. The revived attacks of Vatican's nazis, the wars they made killing off and chasing away native Serbs spoke for itself. Serbia was the native successor and ruler after WW2 but behind the scenes it was cuckolded by nazies and Tito being just one of many others these parasitic entities. The albanian and croat nazis couldn't wait to jump into another war and continue where they stopped in WW2. The Balkan wars was basically WW3 since Serbia was attacked by half of the world all being under the Vatican's umbrella of operations aka NATO.

One of main reasons for lack of western cars (and sports cars especially) in Yugoslavia, were exorbitant custom and import fees implemented to save local car production (hence police cars with 50 or 60 HP because ALL cars had roughly same power). Import duties and fees were as high as 110% of cars original MSRP in western Europe, and there was also strict regulation of foreign currencies transactions. There were faster or better equipped cars in Yugoslavia for task of hunting down phantom, but they were in military use as escort vehicles for Tito's trips (not to mention embarassment of Police for Military doing their work)

Brilliant video, as someone from ex YU its nice to hear these stories are getting told to a bigger audiance. A few other things, while its true the Police drove fairly underpowered cars, there were exceptions. In Croatia they had a 60s Mercedes SL which was used for special events and as a possible intercepter, Citroen DS models were also used. Only in the 80s did the YU car scene and Police fleet get a much needed boost in the form of snappy Opel sedans and VW golfs which were decent for the time.

There was a street drifter named Giorgi Tevzadze from Georgia that primarily used an E34 M5. He was legendary for doing balls to the wall drifting in heavy traffic. Unfortunately he died as a passenger in his own car some years back. There's plenty of videos up on youtube of his antics. Hi Hunter Moon, greetings from Italy! I like your videos and the stories about car culture! I want to suggest some famous/infamous Italian stories, like the "La Banda dell'Uno Bianca" ("White Uno Band"), the Yellow Audi RS4, the Black Bulletproof De Tomaso Deauville, the "misterious" crac of the Italian Bugatti who made the EB110, the story of the real Miura SVJ, prepared and tuned by Bob Wallace, and least, the Spotafora's Ferrari 250 GTE.

Just today i'v been talking with a friend about Romano Artioli and how fiat sabotaged his effort to produce the best supercar ever.
@itsgoodforyougdo
@itsgoodforyougdo Год назад
@@epiculo2 There're lot of theories about this, all ex workers or co-workers said that was his fault, because the EB110 was the most expensive car to produce at the time. Even was a masterpiece, it didn't sold well, so after the EB110 Super Sport, Artioli shutdown for bankruptcy.

@itsgoodforyougdo
@itsgoodforyougdo Год назад
@@epiculo2 I only wrote one of the theories, but I didn't said that was true or not. The development, style and engineering of the car in the beginning was ok, Marcello Gandini designed the first two prototypes, but Artioli said that was "too Lamborghinish" and not Bugatti, Nicola Materazzi said that the four turbos were too much and useless, so after Artioli decides for himself what to do, and gives orders to other people. There're lot of theories, so today it's a "mistery".

I just binged all your content over the course of today and it's a crime how few subs you have. Fantastic work, all around! If you want a somewhat similar story (at least in title), look up the Black Ghost. It's a 1970 Hemi Challenger that would dominate the races at Woodward Avenue in Detroit, then disappear for a few weeks and reappear and do the same thing. As to why the stretches of time in between winning, I'll let you find out for yourself as I think it's a fun story

Just want to make the point: Someone doing this in the US today would be shot at until the car was disabled or he was dead, and if he somehow survived he'd get 10+ years in prison. The absolute state of 'policing'

Yugoslavia in 70s was with almost 0 crime so police shooting on car was unimageable,regular police were allowed to shoot only if someone shot on them
