The story of Amogla camp

Showing the cottages at my parents Amogla camp, on Rock Lake, near Sault Ste Marie, Ontario.
woodgears.ca/am...
More on the construction of cottage #7:
woodgears.ca/co...
The camp used to be a tourist operation, renting cottages by the week. My parents have gotten too old to run the place in 2005, and my dad passed away in 2012. No plans to reopen the camp to tourists at the moment.

Seems like a no-brainer for a few dozen of youtubes finest woodworkers to holiday here and video themselves fixing things! Totally in love with this place after following your videos this last few years :)

Matthias this video brings back so many great memories for me. I used to vacation there with my father and his friends every June in the 90’s. They vacationed there much longer. Cabin 6 and 7 were home to us. Your mom and dad were the most gracious hosts. They always had us over for dinner one night while we were there. I would give one of limbs for another slice of your mom’s rhubarb pie. Winford was one of the most gifted woodworkers I have ever met, and also brewed some damn fine beer. The first time I tried it was when they had us out to the farm for an afternoon. I now reside in Florida and my father is now 72. It’s my dream to bring him back there for a week, to stay at the camp we called home every June to fish. Thank you for wonderful video!

Thank you Thank you Thank you! I spent my formative years growing up on that lake even before your family owned them. The improvements you all did with the cabins were a tremendous upgrade and greatly appreciated by everyone who stayed in them. Now, in my mid 50s I miss that place more than you now! Thank you for this video! This place and your family will always be in my heart!

I think a good idea would be to organize a meet and greet / woodworking camp for your subscribers. They can stay at the property, help you fix the place, meet you and learn from you. Wranglerstar did something like that and the subscribers stayed on his property and helped him plant trees.

Matthias, I have watched your videos for years now (I remember finding your original homemade table saw videos way back when) and i have always found them amazing. Even more amazing though, is how you just made a vlog-style video and handled it better than most youtubers who dedicate their lives to it. I live in South Carolina in the US so I doubt I'll be anywhere near Ontario for a while (especially because I don't yet have a license) but one day I would love to spend time at Amolga camp- if it is still open in a few years, it would be totally worth the drive up there in my eyes!

You're so lucky to have such a place. I have a couple of very dear friends who own a wood near me, and there's a log cabin there which the family built. I help look after the campsite in my own small way too, though with my health going, I can't do what I once did. But it's a lovely spot, VERY quiet, and no Mobile/Cellphone coverage, unles you go right up to the top of the hill !

Bittersweet but fascinating tour, Matthias. Once upon a day I would have jumped at the chance to property manage and maintain a tourist resort but those days are behind me. What intrigues me the most is the fact that I am almost sure that I ran into a younger you and your father in 1989 at a home store (can't remember the name of it) in Sault Ste Marie. Not sure where it was but I'm thinking on Black Rd near McNabb but I can't really be sure. But a big store with lots of stuff and we were looking for a shower stall and so were you and your Pa. We went for the neo-angle with the glass doors while I think you guys favoured the square box stall.

Hey Matthias, I hope you find people and friends to maintain the status of the cottages. My parents have a petit chalet in the Vosges Mountains in France - especially I am very attached to this place even economically it makes no sense not to sell it. But I know it would leave a hole in my heart, so I can relate why you & your family keep amogla camp. And when I come to Canada I will contact you for a work and stay arrangement. I wish you good luck and many helping hands!

This place is spectacular. The fellow with the woodworking RU-vidr meet-up idea is onto something. The video series could be called "Terror at Amogla" and it could be about all of you creating your own pugil sticks from scratch. Yours would be some kind of air-powered piston-style stick that allowed you to adjust fighting range with a simple turn of a wooden gear. It would also shoot marbles at opponents and it would be super good a Jenga. You'd call it the Screw Advance PantaStick. Matt Cremona's would be made after a day in spent the forest hand-selecting the finest tree, milling on a homemade bandsaw mill that he just happened to have with him, and, of course, it would feature some incredible figure. It would be called the CrotchStick. Frank's would be turned from 80 different segmented rings and it would kick asses in stop-motion. When finished it would almost certainly hang on some sort of French cleat. It would be called the HeyItsOkayToIncreasinglyEmbraceCNCForWoodworkingAsLongAsYoiDoItBeautifullyStick and it would have awesome sound effects. There would be others, of course, all beautiful. Marc's would be made on like $50 million in gear that PowerMatic had brought to the site and it'd be called StickNolo and there would be a class on it posted to the Guild. Jeremey's would be astonishingly precise and incorporate no fewer than 720 ting ass drawers assembled from exactly 17,511 box joints from every conceivable direction. All would be exactly alike to within ten thou and all the wood used would be important from the US. It would be called Jer's Bolt Action Stick. Rob's wouldn't be a stick at all until about 60 seconds before the fight, wherein he'll whip one up to perfection using only a series of never-before-seen cascading dovetails. And instead of fighting you, he'll just stare down his glasses at you and you'll just give up. It'll be Cossman's Dovetailed Stick and it'll cost a shitload but it'll be worth every penny. And then, of course, the DIRESTick, which will be made from nothing more than plywood covered in DIRESTA logos each applied in a unique manner, from acid stencil, to radiation, to chemical fire, to celebrity blood stains, and much more. And somehow everyone will want one. Wow, what a freaking cool series that would be.

I can fully understand that you and your siblings are attached tot Amogla Camp. It's a beautiful and very peaceful place (no internet might be a selling point), with lots of memories. The houses are build by a very good craftsman, probably without detailed project plans and a detailed architectural design. I wish you and your family many future happy gatherings on this place. I have one question: how is the exterior wood prepared to last so long (or have they to be repainted often)? Thanks for sharing, it's an very impressive video. 👌👌👌

Matthias, Its interesting you mentioning ash borers. Out east here in Durham, Ontario we're getting hit by them pretty hard. Pretty terrible. I honestly hope it doesn't spread to your area.
