Waldstein sonata is an incredible piece on classical piano music where Beethoven starts a battle between E natural and Eb. Here I'll take you through the piece and show you some of the coolest parts. You'll learn a lot about chords, how music is structured, and how brilliant Beethoven is. Enjoy!

Cool, glad you liked it. I'd love to do more of this type of video (introducing/talking about a cool piece) so it's nice to hear you like it.

Haha, its pretty clunky on the keyboard. My old mic would have picked up the horrible noise too from the keys clicking.

On an unrelated note, Waldstein 3rd movement sounds like Beethoven writing for a disney movie

Haha, hmm, I'll have to ponder this deeply. Also, consider if that's a positive or negative, lol.

@crappyanimations9992 It's more likely that inspiration flowed in the opposite direction. Movie scores are heavily, if indirectly, influenced by classical music - especially Beethoven.

Awesome! I enjoy making this style for sure. Looking at what makes a piece special. I just put out one about Pastorale Sonata (Beethovem Forgot how to Count), and that's in this style.

I've been fascinated with the glissando octaves in the Waldstein's 3rd movement, because Andras Schiff, in his "Lecture-Recitals" video, said if you play them without glissando, "it's pure cheating". I found many comparison videos of performances, but three show distinctly different techniques for playing them. The only non-cheater was a student at the Curtis Institute, Yin Li, who played them with the best glissando I've heard: Student Recital: BEETHOVEN - Sonata No. 21 in C major, Op. 53, "Waldstein" Horowitz played them without glissando: Horowitz - Beethoven Waldstein Sonata 1956 Marta Czech played them with two hands: Beethoven - Sonata No. 21 in C major, Op. 53 "Waldstein" ; Marta Czech

It's ironic that you make E-flat the villain in this musical tale, since it's more typical role is in expressing triumph in Beethoven's heroic mood (for example: Eroica symphony, Emperor concerto, piano sonatas 4, 13, 26).

the funny thing is, the final note of that famous suspense sting used in the video at 0:06 is an e-flat (or d-sharp? idk what would be the better way to write it out) that you cut out

Thank you for this video. The 3rd movement of the Waldstein is definitely in the top 3 of my favorite Beethoven piano sonata movements. I always call it the energizer bunny movement. It just keeps going and going. Would you consider doing a video on the 3rd movement of his 29th sonata? It’s Adagio Sostenuto, probably my favorite of all his piano sonata movements.

That's a great nickname. It's true, the piece has so much non-stop energy. The C section, which I didn't play much because it's been a few years, just keeps upping the game. That's a great idea. I've mentioned before that that slow movement is one of the most incredible piece of music. But it's tough for lots of people to understand. I'll add that idea onto my future ideas list for sure.
