I started this video and 40 min. into it, i realized that the entire family; silently gathered behind me and had been watching and listening to this woman. From the 8 year old to 18 year old, and the wife. All 7 of them, and not a word was spoken, no fussing, just intense listening... When the candle was blown out at the end, my oldest girl said "and what do we have to complain about...nothing"......

As heartbreaking as this tale was, it was performed in a masterful way. Many times I had to stop ,and actually remind myself that this was a reenactment. I cannot fathom the horror and sorrow these people had to endure. This is heartwrenching. It touches me, as a multiracial person with slavery and indentured servitude in my ancestral bloodline. It is awful that real people had to ensure this type of life. As much as we don't like to hear these accounts brought to life the awareness needs to be shared and these stories of these lost lives need to be appreciated. It is sad that there were so many people that believed they had the right to own a person and treat them in such a way. People like Maggie and others made it possible for us in the world today. Thank you for bringing Maggie and her story to life.

for sure, This Maggie Delaney character was so well done, and unfortunately encompassed so much of the suffering of the indentured.... and imagine, for practically nothing, you could be 'transported' and suffer the same, for nothing. I remember seeing some cartoons as a kid about the Aussie's transported away for nothings..... and they were treated thus as well..... no wonder they have that ingrained toughness.... not only the climate, and the hardships there, but also for the servitude forced upon them..... horrible thing in history, but should never ever be forgotten..... this was a perfect presentation in my view.

@EmilyKinny

@@pattijesinoski1958 A source would be great, though I know you don't have one. There were almost 4 million black enslaved people in America in 1850, and there was barely over 1 million immigrant Irish at that time. And regardless, the fact that there were "more" of one or the other is completely irrelevant to warrant a comment in the first place, because even one single person of either (or any) ethnicity being so horribly treated is a dark, unforgiveable mark on American history. It's proof that regardless of how horrible Irish people had it, even though *back then* they were seen as inferior, today the color of dark skin is a reason to downplay what millions of people suffered while lighter skinned people are allowed unscrutinized compassion.

Dearest Carol, I sit typing this with tears streaming down my cheeks. Completely captivated by your story and the tellin' of it. It breaks my heart, so it does! I'm from Ireland myself, far and away back in my family line. It's entirely possible my own stock was indentured like Maggie. It's hard to imagine what life was like for them back then, all the fears and hopes and grief and pain they endured. But I agree it's important to be tellin' people about it, because sure and if we don't, it's liable to happen again. I've little doubt there are poor souls in this world now, who'd be forced into the same choice if the laws would allow it. And I'm sure there are many and many who cannot endure the tale, some as you say because they want to deny things like this ever happened. And some who have something dark in their past that the tale simply gets to close to and makes them turn away. But it is part of our past. Part of our very lives. And we mustn't deny our past or the people in it, for sure and they are a part of us. Thank you for this wonderful story Carol. And thank you for this wonderful video Jon.

I forget the exact year, but I have it all down in a book I made for him! I believe they came from Ireland! I had the name change several times in my research. The last was believed to be McClanahan, but could not confirm! It stopped near the sea, off the coast of Maryland and Virginia! My brain is addled at the moment from sobbing so! What you say is so correct, you can't forget who and from where you came! Have a truly Blessed day! Off to splash some cold water on my face! LOL!

What a heart wrenching performance this was. I cried twice, when she described losing her children and at the end. Giving a 'like' doesn't even begin to cover my appreciation for this story. It was amazing. I know it's fictional but I'm hoping she made her dreams come true and made herself a home after her indenture ended. Thank you so much for this.

Dear Carol, your performance is uncanny and I'd vote you an oscar if I had such power. But more important is the gift you give to us: to realize the importance of these often forgotten histories of oppressed people. I pray we find the goodness in ourselves to fight injustice like this, because the evil of greed and cruelty is still with us today. And thank you, Townsends, this is exactly the kind of exploration that makes your channel a cut above the average youtube video. Kudos.

All I can say is coming off Black History Month and my reflections there from documentaries I watched and now this.....all I can think is how we humans can be so horrid to each other. It is heartbreaking. 😔

Yes. It truly is heartbreaking. There would be no hope if it were not for God. His love for us is so deep even though we do not deserve it and our sin hurts Him so much. Thank God for the mercy that He has shown us by dying for our sins and rising again so that we could have hope and a true spirit-filled life. He died for our sins, in our place so that by believing in Jesus we would not have to suffer eternally. Christ offers salvation and life as a free gift to all who would come to Him, repent and commit their life to Him. Believe in who He is and what He did for us. Commit your life in its entirety to Him, holding nothing back and you will never regret it. There will be hardships in life but He promises to be with you through them to all who would come to Him. To those who beleive in Him He promises to take all of the hardships in our life and to turn it around and turn it into something good to those who love God and are called according to His purpose. He will never leave you nor forsake you. John 14:6 Jesus said to him, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me. -Romans 10:9-10 that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved; for with the heart a person believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation. -Ephesians 2:8-9 For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not as a result of works, so that no one may boast. -Hebrews 7:25 Therefore He is able to save completely those who come to God through Him, because He always lives to intercede for them.

I think we all need to understand that a young America was not alone in how badly it treated what they referred to as the underclass. This treatment happened everywhere slavery/indenture was accepted. And that is the real crime. Human trafficking has no place in our world, yet it still exists. Please support any and all efforts to end human trafficking.

Losing her children and her husband. Thank you for this. I honestly will be spending St Patrick's day remembering my heritage and the journey of my ancestors.

I first watched this on RU-vid, but then bought the DVD (with the accompanying music CD) so I would always have it. All I can say is Carol Jarboe has created a character and life story that goes straight to your heart (and soul). She is a true treasure and I truly thank Jon Townsend for introducing her to us! Oh, and the music CD is also stellar - and remember, buying the set through the Townsends website also supports Jon's work, maybe you should buy a copy too! 😊

Excellent performance by Carol - she touched my soul. The harsh lives and brutal treatment of many indentured servants (voluntary and involuntary) in colonial America has been appallingly ignored or minimized in our history text books it seems. The American public ought to know that not all transported servants came willingly/voluntarily as some poor wretches were abducted or inveigled (human trafficking).

I have family from Ireland, too. Going by genealogy records there was a woman in my family who had to become an indentured servant and after watching this video, I pray she didn't have to suffer what Mrs. Delaney did. This video really touched my heart and it's so hard to forget the tales of sorrow and of the cruelties Mrs. Delaney suffered knowing that I have a distant female relative who had to become an indentured servant in order to survive her times.

Thank you Carol for a performance that touches heart and soul. Thank you for shining a light on the history of the thousands of indentured servants who came to the colonies. Most were teens and children. There was even a London program that rounded up poor children and shipped them, one-hundred at a time, to southern colonies to work in the tobacco fields.

I just discovered video yesterday and absolutely think it’s amazing what she’s doing. I finished her interview about creating Maggie a few minutes ago and had to come back to this video to rewatch it a second time while I clean. And she is right, the reason I loved this so much was because she brought out the raw emotions, pain, and suffering that history books or teachers don’t touch on. Does anyone know anymore videos like these? I would really love to see more stuff like this. Someone acting out voices and emotions from people who lived way before us. I would love to see other scenarios all around the world, different backgrounds and races. If anyone can help I’d be very thankful
