When I got to meet Ed Boon at Combo Breaker some years ago, I actually got to ask him why the MK3 animalities were all solid colored while any added from there were new sprites. Ed told me the MK3 ones were done with as small memory of objects as possible to make them fit, while they had a lot more memory to work with for UMK3 and MKT.
That’s really cool. I always wanted to know this, I wish they were all the quality of the UMK3/Trilogy. The solid color in MK3 with the outline makes them look even more goofy than they already are.
MK9 - Fatality, Stage Fatality, and Babality MKX - Brutality MK11 - Mercy and Friendship MK1 - Animality We have everything from the Original 2D Era represented in the NRS era. I now wonder if they will ever bring back Hara Kiri. lol.
There's something about Vogel having used the puff of smoke animation skip technique and then later saying "but I don't think that's good enough" that shows how much he improved as an artist.
I wouldn't be surprised if Liu Kang has his signature MK2 fatality as Animality... again. Still having Animalities return comes full circle with the Netherrealm era games (kinda) by having MK9 with Babalities, MK11 with Friendships (which got teased with one of The Joker's fatailites before being a real thing) and now with MK"1" the return of the Animalities, heck, would be funny to see both Sector and Cyrax perform their old Animality in MK"1" and see how brutal will become this time.
Another thing to add to the full circle thing you're mentioning - each of the older finishers have returned. Babalities were in MK9; Brutalities returned in MKX and became a staple of the series; Friendships came back in MK11 Ultimate and now, Animalities are back for MK One - Khaos Reigns.
@@TheJigsawKiller I would argue that the hara kiri have become the quitalities, since it kinda takes the same idea as not letting your opponent do a tality on you and instead going out on your own terms
The team also got the mercy idea from kids demanding mercy rounds from each other back in the arcades due to lack of funds. It was super common. I saw fights start over one person refusing to give someone else a mercy round.
At 1 point we had them all in 1 game (I think) Fatality, brutality, babality, animality and mercy. Brutalities were 11 button combos though, large combos more like killer instinct ultras. I prefer MKX onwards brutalities that are seamless at the end of the match.
I'm sorry but that line delivery of that Johnny Cage Animality 9:55 made me spit out my water laughing ( "Look at that cute little dude,Oh he just did MURDER!") 😆😆😆😆😆 But yeah aside from that I glad to see Animalities making a return in MK1 especially with how many other things that also return recently like with Babalities in MK9, Brutalities in MKX & Friendships in MK11.
Since they’ve confirmed that even guest characters get animalities I’m extremely curious. My guesses: Ghostface - panther, vulture, or raven Homelander - eagle or cow/bull Omniman - lion or grizzly bear Peacemaker - dove Conan - mammoth T-1000 - chameleon
@@flipsvstheworld hahah. Man everyone clowns that movie but I saw it through the eyes of a 6 year old and thought it was the most badass sequel ever. I did hate that scorpions spears were little dragon heads though. Weird creative choice.
I'm hoping nrs maintains some of their silliness. If Scorpion turns into a scorpion its really on the nose and fine. It makes sense. Its retro. Nostalgic. If Liu Kang turns into a dragon, nobody is surprised but some people will be happy however They cannot make them all obvious. I hope Sub Zero turns into a penguin, Reptile turns into a bird, Rain turns into a seal. Keep it creative and innovative.
The fact that Sheeva is the one that turns into a scorpion when they already had a character *_named_* Scorpion makes it seem like Midway originally had no intention of adding him into the game (which is weird, since Ed Boon has said multiple times that he's his favorite)
We've finally reached the time where we've had every klassic arcade finisher in the NRS era and I couldn't be happier. The fact that the MK1 music has a callback to the MK3 animality music is even better.
Since Scorpion wasn't in MK3 until Ultimate, Sheeva turned into a scorpion for her Animality, so they had to do something different for Scorpion. You'll also notice all the Ultimate and Trilogy characters have slightly weird looking animals: they don't glow and are smaller than the OG cast. They just couldn't bother at that point, but they had to add them for the sake of completion.
I mean part of me wants to say Jax is the Gorilla just because it looks like they're going with the strong arms idea but I would question the idea of relating one of the black characters with a Gorilla but who knows.
Seeing stuff like this is why yall are the goats of mk. Seeing the old school mk brought back so many memories from my childhood. No wonder me and my buddy's never did animalitys cause we didn't know u could even mercy 😂. Thanks for that walk down memory lane ❤
MK3 Animalities were good, because they are just big animals with that glow. Trouble was that UMK3 and Trilogy bring the real size animals, so we had a small Cat, Skunk, Penguin and Rabbit, just to name a few.
I guess the joke with Scorpion is it would be too obvious for him to turn into a scorpion, but also they already gave that to Sheeva and they can't just take that from her.

They had a lot of time to develop this and in the end... some undermeh, if this word exists. Nightwolf is a wolf, of course, sub zero is a polar bear, obvious, and scorpion is a penguin because Sheeva got the scorpion first. Why? because they just started picking at random to do the other characters. At least, in the end, he and the penguin have the same colors.
Before Friendships came to MK11 I thought they might do Animalities. But then what would they do with Kotal Kahn's "Animality" Just like Scorpion and Liu Kang, he's another character who definitely has an "Animality" as a Fatality. It's also a great one!
Blimey Ketchup, I am sure I had the magazine with the "Red Robin" character. And I am sure there was a roomer about the living forest being a stage fatality because there was a picture of Mileena being eaten by a tree. On the subject of Animalities, As goofy as they were I certainly enjoyed them and am looking forwards to them very much.
The most shocking Animality that I’ve seen was from a fan made version of Michael Myers also from Mugen, who turned into a monster oh alien creature similar to The Thing. I still have the footage on my channel since it was one of the very 1st things I’ve uploaded and it’s still kind of disturbing. Although I think combining both John Carpenter’s The Thing & John Carpenter’s Halloween is a brilliant idea.
I actually think that Reptile is gonna be the bone dinosaur one, because dinosaurs are related to Reptile, but yes I can see that being Quan Chi too. If Reptile is indeed the gorilla that would be a cool throwback for sure.
I know the living forest one is real. I expeirnced it one time on the Sega version of MKIi. This memory is so clear it can't be Mendella effect. It just can't be.
While I'm sure Liu is still a dragon, I REALLY hope he's a massive planetary celestial one to reflect his power and status as a Titan. Be sweet if the Kameos also had animalities but theirs were goofy ones. So Scorpion can be a Scorpion or a Penguin, depending.
