The story of Brexit by four British literary giants

Once upon a time, four British rock stars of the book world - Ken Follett, Lee Child, Jojo Moyes and Kate Mosse - decided to go on an anti-Brexit European crusade to keep hold of their links with their European readers. Along the way they stopped off at FRANCE 24's studios in Paris to talk to Culture Editor Eve Jackson and Europe Editor Catherine Nicholson about their Brexit shame, their disappointment with UK politics and why they felt the need to tell their European fans that they still love them. For the rest of the story, click on the video.

Almost no one on the pro-Brexit side I have met has rejected Europe and European culture as suggested here, in the same way few pro-Remain Brits are rabidly Euro-federalist. What people have rejected is the EU as a political project. And who exactly have the British government or people "turned on"? There is no comparison between the causes of the Huguenot wars and what is happening in the UK. This shows how if not delusional you are, at the least how out of contact with your fellow citizens you are.

It is important for you to note that the EU is not only a trade project, as apparently you want, but also a peace project and that, to keep peace on our continent so devastated by wars during centuries,, we know that gradually we have to be more integrated also politically. Thanks to the EU, we had peace since 1945, it is no wonder that the EU received the Nobel price of peace. Furthermore, the UK did not reject the EU project, the majority in the referendum was so small ( N-Ireland and Scotland voted to remain, young people voted to remain) that the only conclusion is that your country is profoundly divided and this for years to come with a high risk of splitting up. So sad ...

If we were rejecting the EU because we didn't agree with the political project we'd be joining the EEA instead. Brexit has become a hate project. You hear insults all the time about our fellow europeans. Even invoking the memory of the great wars to push the idea of nationalism. People rejected the EU because our media has had a hate campaign against it for decades and every failure is laid at their door... If we were all doing well and making lots of money , we wouldn't be interested in brexit. If the EU was so bad, how come 27 out of the 35 advanced economies in the world want to be a part of it? To be honest I don't have an issue with a federal europe and don't feel threatened by it..

@@MarkJones-hc9pf do you really want to have a debate about the english judicial system with a lawyer of 30 years experience specialising in cases in the higher English courts ? Bring it on, fantasist. By the way, cobber, the human rights court of appeal is a new one on me ? Do you mean the European Court of Human Rights ? A court with no connection with the eu at all ?

As a citizen of Germany married to an english husband , which has died in 2014 , I am insulted that english people do not want to have anyhing to do anymore with the continent after 42 years being in the EU. My husband lived in Germany since 1975 and was very welcome and succesful in his carrier at german universities. I shall certainly not go and visit England after Brexit.

You are sorely mistaken. There is nothing in leaving that says we English speakers wish to turn away from the continent we liberated (and defended through NATO). It's about freedom under the common law, and turning away from civil law overregulation.

I'm surprised they'd didn't all slap each other on the back and say "well done darling, good interview" before asking where the after show champagne was and if they get a free driver to take them home. These people make me want to throw up. They are fake, selfish, wannabes. The best author there writes a poor man's 'Bourne'. Like, skint!

Just love the way the video talks about the EU has pumped 310million pounds into the Arts in the UK up to 2016. Er, and where did that 310million pounds initially come from. It came in the form of a rebate that was already paid into the EU in the annual 'club membership fee' in the first place - so in other words the money is directly from UK taxpayers money, brilliantly dressed up, recycled and then repackaged back as a lovely EU present to the UK. Goebbels would be so proud of this spin. Now you can also argue that the same level of funding might stop by the UK government once Brexit is completed (they have said it won't) however, whether these millions of pounds every year are spent on the arts or possibly instead, for example, the elderly, the NHS or homeless, etc, well, going forward, that will be FOR US to decide now. And if we don't like whatever decision is made - then we can always change the government of the day that has made that decision, which is the actual point of Brexit really, for anyone out there that still doesn't understand why 17.4million people (the majority) voted for it in the first place, so that we can TAKE BACK CONTROL and become a self governing country once again, so that we can trade freely, if so desired, with the rest of the world once again, you know, like a normal country.

The tories blamed the EU for all their own mistakes - since this was so convenient - and used the tory media (most of them) to convince people like you that all this true. It’s a scam. I recommend you to think logically about this without using the typical soundbites. Just use deep, critical thinking.

EUROPEAN CULTURE IS NOT THE SAME AS THE EU. Wish these talking heads would stop trying to blur the lines.
@bigpete4227
@bigpete4227 4 года назад
Sami Sund of course you could separate the two. Remove the Eu and European culture still exists, remove European culture and Europe will no longer exist.
@bigpete4227
@bigpete4227 4 года назад
Sami Sund if culture is a constantly evolving concept and there was culture in Europe before the Eu then why do you need the Eu for culture? Surely, even without the Eu, European culture would constantly evolve if it existed before the Eu and is capable of evolving, as you say. The Eu is shrinking in many ways. Not only is it about to lose one of its largest contingents but it’s finances and it’s wealth and it’s influence are seriously deteriorating. It is an organisation that is going broke by the day and cannot balance it’s own books. And because of its inward looking ethos and strict/prohibiting trade practices, the rest of the world is losing patience with it. The recent trade threats from the US, the refusal of many national airlines to pay its demands for taxes when flying over European airspace. It’s constant restrictions on Russia, not to mention the reliance on Russian gas and oil. And last but not least it’s expansionists plans haven’t gone unnoticed by the Middle East or Russia or China. The Eu is yesterday’s news and the continuation of Germany by financial means. When it all goes tits up for a third time, don’t look at us to come and bail you out again with the lives of our sons and daughters. Margret Thatcher said it right when she said that you Europeans are a weak lot.

Ken Follett’s embarrassment appears to mean the need to retain his EU based customers. Fair enough. But the rest of this is a fairly patronising lecture from the EU’s chief nation as to the UK’s errors. If a second referendum were to be imposed, an edited version of this would be a great campaign video for Vote Leave II.

I would say to these people look at what's on the télé or movies, look in the bookshops. Hardly anything comes from Europe, except Countdown. Is this the problem? Look at the pro EU Tony Blair government, it was they who said it was alright for school pupils to drop French or German at 13.Education,education,education. Look at the sparsity of provision for teaching foreign languages in schools. Things are hardly better than when I was at school. Look at pro EU Labour's promise to have no benefits for two years for foreign workers whilst encouraging free movement in the single market. It isn't just Vrexiteers, Remainers are not very European in their mentality. That is part of the problem.
