Important to note that another reason urban motorways are rubbish is that, due to induced demand, they cause a higher amount of people to drive and thus cause more traffic than you’d have without them.

Just stumbled across this and as a saddo who likes this sort of stuff it is fun to find any roads that are out of zone, for example the A88 near Falkirk which is entirely in zone 9! One thing you didn’t mention though is that motorways in England and Wales use a separate zoning system from the A/B roads, numbered 1-6, whilst in Scotland they simply replace the A road for the most part. This is why Britain has no M7 but has an M876.

What happened to the M11 carrying on up the East of the country to link with the Humber Bridge and onwards up to Newcastle ? The Eastern side of the country has no motorway link

it never happened there isnt even a motorway going south from humber bridge only a dual carrageway that ends at the M180 on one of the junctions nearest cleethorpse

The motorway network in scotland is appalling. It,s dual 2 lane motorways in each direction in the central belt. The only decent motorways in scotland are the m8 m74 and a74m to the england border. Another point motorways in scotland are less than 70 miles the m8 is the longest motorway route north of the border. A good idea is to extend the m8 to greenock but the snp will not fund the extension tight fisted clowns. The m6 is the longest motorway in the uk it runs from the east Midlands to the england scotland border.

I live in Scotland too, so I know exactly what you're on about Barry! I drive on the A1 going down the East Coast and amazed that for large parts just single carriageways such a ballache to drive on compared to the M74. Thanks for your comment.

People aren’t going to build more motorways since that encourages more drivers which means more pollution. Climate change exists.

@@AdistuffRBX But surely by building better roads it will help to alleviate congestion thus helping to reduce pollutions. Cars sitting idle because the roads are bad doesn't help the environment either.

@@acivilconversation18 Look at cities like Los Angeles. Loads of motorways. Loads of traffic. Motorways defeat there own purpose by putting more drivers on the road in the long term and smart motorways are just killing people so that’s not an option.

@@acivilconversation18 Although cars sitting idle do not help the environment and make it worse as that’s double the emissions. Most people don’t like electric cars either as they aren’t solving congestion like public transport would
