In 1996, Sega's legendary AM2 studio released what may be the most disliked game in their catalog: Sonic the Fighters. Often derided by both Sonic and fighting game fans, this game has built its own community on the outskirts of the FGC. This is that community's story.
This video started as a freelance article pitch years ago, but I finally was able to get it together this year thanks to the support I was able to find with my Melee videos. I hope those who have come to my channel for Melee will be open to learning about another game where funny cartoon characters punch each other.
Thanks to ‪@shadetail‬ , @Cronnicossy, ‪@SonicArena‬ , ‪@mysticnoodle‬ , ‪@MKMaster250‬ and KOS for footage featured in this video as well as for your input putting this together, also of course thanks to Matt Beach, Raxx8, Gizaru, and so many more people omg. Also thanks to ‪@GuileWinQuote‬ for offering FGC wisdom to this stinky Smash player, KOS for a bunch of stuff, Justin and Raine for help with arcade machine footage, and Resprit, Kadence and Nona for revision notes.

Where do I even begin? This is the video that the Sonic the Fighters community deserves, and I just want to thank you for all the extra time and effort you put into shining a light on the game and everyone who contributed to the scene! When I first began hosting tournaments, I never thought we’d make it as far as we have. Over the years, we’ve formed a close bond as a community and I truly believe that Sonic the Fighters has a bright future as a competitive game! Fantastic video. - Polymath

Many fighting games have a video showcasing a story about some legendary low tier hero who flips everything everyone thought they knew about the game. The game, Sonic the Fighters, itself, is it's own low-tier hero. A spectacle of a game with so many secrets and some of the most kindhearted badasses a community can ask for. Especially a Sonic community.

The whole "critics hated the game" debacle is why I hate when journalists that don't know jack about fighting games review fighting games. It's like asking someone that doesn't know and it's not interested in driving/racing to review a racing simulation game, of course they're not going to like the game because they're not understanding 10% of the mechanics behind it, plus STF has one-button combos which enables button mashers to just carpal tunnel their way through arcade mode and then think it's the game's fault. Same reason why MK receives a ton of outstanding reviews, because there's lots of eye-candy for non-fighting game players there, thus they forget to review the game in a more technical way. Anyways, really great video, it itched me to try and convince people to play this game again over here lol

I've kinda just stopped giving a shit about reviews almost entirely when I realized that a lot of my favourite games (various Mega Man games, NEO TWEWY and the fighting game genre as a whole) are things that more casual players (so most of the reviewers I've seen) can't for the life of them seem to be able to actually review the games and not spread misinformation on the depth of those games due to just not knowing shit about them. Especially since I'm more into the technical side of said games and hearing nobody but like maybe one or two people actually talking about the technical side and saying the games aren't as mechanically deep as they actually are just angers me

I mean hey, just like Melee, Sonic the Fighters managed to find a competitive scene against the odds. This video tying in to Melee not just once was a cherry on top. There is so much more Melee/Sonic the Fighters left to play and both still remain far from solved games. This was a behemoth of a project, and I'm glad I watched it!

Me and some friends love messing around with random fighting games like this, and about 5 or 6 years ago we dedicated a night to Sonic the Fighters. We didn't know anything about the competitive community, so it basically just felt like a 6 hour session of us going into uncharted waters of undiscovered tech and weird mechanics, and it's one of my best memories of playing competitive fighters. Just a nonstop night of "WAIT that's how that works??" and "YOU CAN DO THAT? That's so sick!" I really love that this video exists. After that night with friends, I found myself as a believer in this games potential, but never really dug into it beyond that. Which is my bad. But it's amazing to see it gets the highlight it deserves with more info and history than I would've ever expected.

I think, like Sonic R, it was caught during the era when Sonic couldn't do ANYTHING without drawing mockery. Couldn't pick up a sword without people acting like it was the second coming of 06. @@wusstunes As someone who really liked Virtua Fighter when I first played it back like a decade ago I never really thought "You know what Virtua Fighter needs? Less depth and technical aspects". Now that a wealth of information has come out about it over the internet years, I can see why people would enjoy it even if they already play fighting games.

@Slick_Tails
@Slick_Tails 5 месяцев назад
What can I say, except, this was amazing. You clearly put in a whole lot of effort, and despite me knowing basically nothing about this game I was hooked all the way through. I especially love how each character has their little spotlight through different players and commentary, and I was able to understand basic principles of the game thanks to your explanations. I'm also intrigued by the fact the game seems really well balanced, as evidenced by low tiers Amy and Bark putting in strong showings. That's pretty crazy considering the game's legacy as a knock-off "kiddie" fighting game. I think videos like this are a reminder that so long as you have a passionate community, however small, a fanbase is never truly "dead". Nowadays people glance over player counts and make assumptions, but I think if you love a game and can find other people to play against, that's all that matters. Maybe there could be a follow up video in the future if events continue? On a similar note, I'm heavily invested in the game Keyforge, a card game with physical decks that can also be uploaded to a fan site and played online. Despite its reputation as a "dead" game, the current NKFL (Nordic Keyforge League) has over 200 players competing, plus a whole bunch of other online tournaments, the recent Worlds event and store championships building up starting in March alongside the release of the next set, Grim Reminders. (Of which I am thoroughly hyped.) Yes, other card games have way more players: Magic, Hearthstone, Pokémon, Yu-Gi-Oh, Flesh and Blood, Marvel Snap, Legends of Runeterra and even the recent Lorcana making some waves. But those player counts don't mean anything next to the fact that Keyforge is the most fun I've ever had with a card game and continues to both excite and surprise me. And that's what gaming is all about. :)

I clicked on this video just to have something to calm me down and fall asleep to. It's nothing personal, I just like having something in the background and will often click on longer videos. However, this was way more interesting than I anticipated. How this silly little game I played with friends when I was younger actually had a competitive scene unlike anything else was just so deeply intriguing that I felt myself glued to the screen. Then we get to Sunset Showdown and hearing the story about Mystic I was so invested in his story. Having 10 back to back matches that all were close was like something from a movie. The gameplay itself just felt unreal. I felt more awake than ever and it's 6 AM as of writing this comment. After all of that, I clicked on the timeline and saw another 30 minutes left. I thought a 2 and a half hour long video about a tiny fighting game's competitive scene was stretching it, but I was thoroughly entertained all the way. Might be the best documentary online that I've ever seen. Great work!

This is such an awesome video. I don't know much about Fighters but despite being such a long video, it was very informative and fun to watch, and the game itself seems really cool. The music choices are great too, Sonic R's menu music in particular. The text on 1:19:58 seems to last longer than it should but it's a small issue, the rest of the video is edited really well.

Thank you so much for making this video. It was very clearly a labor of love and I hope it helps give Sonic the Fighters more exposure. You rock!!!

Dang what a great video! I feel the "sitting in a lobby waiting for anyone to show up" story, as an enthusiast for Windjammers it was a lot of my formative years. I really need to give StF the time of day! Games been an absolute blast every time I've had a chance to play it, and I really wanna see it more.

I came from the xbox scene of sonic fighters. Got introduced with gems collections as a 8 year old, played hundreds of hours as a kid even when i couldnt understand some of the commands list. The number 1 and 2 players on the leaderboard at one point were my sparring partners for awhile. (Milestailsprower) and (XBlessdevil) as well as (Raytheboy)! Was about 10 years back or so when the grind was ongoing. Would've KIIIILLED to be in one of these interviews honestly because being perfected by a tails 8 times in a row gives you a lot to think about. Out of all the players I was by far the youngest so it was a pretty unique experience . Seeing the game finally get some positive feedback more often feels pretty nice! I appreciate this video immensely and alot of us are extremely grateful!

Man, you're such an amazing creator man, it's criminal that you don't have more eyes on you. This is like, such a treat, to find out about an entire scene I had ZERO idea even existed.

It's so cool to see how much players have pushed this game from a casual fighting game to a more advanced competitive fighter. Kind of reminds me of melee's origins to where it is now

i entered this video knowing nothing about this game, i ended this video realizing this is a fluid and awesome game, and one of the fighting games i liked the most to watch matches of, and i love how offensively focus the game is, as even timer stall and wall climbs look sick and flow right back in either movement or combos. its a marvel to watch

I never played StF myself but back in my cringe teenage years on the Sonic corner of DeviantART, Honey the Cat was a particular favorite of mine. (This was back when we only knew of her by hacking Sonic Gems Collection, where she was glitchy and parts of her model wouldn't display correctly, so a lot of fanart from the time didn't include her pigtails.) It makes me happy to see her not only get officially implemented into the game, but also end up in the Archie comics and develop an even bigger fanbase as a result. Fingers crossed that she gets more official acknowledgement in the future :)

When I played this game in the Sonic Gems Collection, I never thought that this would be a fighting game that people would love. I just accepted the novelty of being able to play a Sonic game I had never seen before. What this tells me is that the Fighting Game Community really like unbalanced chaotic fighting games because that's where you can create fascinating combos and at high levels of play the fights become entertaining to watch and exciting to play.

After finally finishing this, i gotta say this is a fantastic video for gaining interest in the game. So many games out there deserve a video like this and i'm happy StF has one. It'd be a stretch to say I want to play this game competitively, but my urge to mess around with it casually was definitely bolstered. I hope the scene has gets even more players!

Based for using Falcom music Amazing video, does a ton of justice towards a game I genuinely felt like was unfairly wronged.
