She was the queen of a kingdom where humans and dragons lived together peacefully. When the war between dragons started she created the dragon slayer magic and fight for humanity. Time pass and the process of dragonification started. Dragon slayers become dragons. Her own husband and people were afraid of her becoming a dragon and betrayed her. While being looked in the dungeons she discover her pregnancy. Then her bastard of a husband try to kill the baby. That was her breaking moment, she losses it and become a dragon. After centuries as a dragon she meet Zeref who helps her to return into her human form. But she son realizes that she is not human. Food tastes different, she fell emotion differently... She was a dragon not a human. After discovering that her baby never died and somehow she was still pregnant become obsessed with the idea of transferring her mind in her daughter's body so she can be human again. But in the moment she had her baby in her hands she couldn’t do it. After she loved her child more then she loved her humanity. So she knowing her mind state is not well she abandoned Erza protecting her of herself. She kind of locked the memories of Erza until their fight. She win but she couldn’t kill her daughter so she killed herself. Once again Queen Irene Belserion protected her daughter from her worst enemy: herself. Sad story, I really liked Irene. Her and Erza's story is the most tragic in Fairy Tail.

@@adrianamr5425 No, August had to deal with knowing who his parents were, but them never knowing who he was. Erza's mom loved Erza, August's mom didn't know he existed. He sacrificed himself for his own mother and she didn't even know who he was.

She remembered the love that made her want to protect her the time when she first turned into a dragon. In the end, she's a lot like Erza who will go ballistic when their loved ones are endangered. To me, that was a natural thing for her to do. After all, Erza certainly didnt get it from her father.
