The story of George Harrison's album Somewhere in England

Here I tell the story of George Harrison's 1981 album Somewhere In England. How his own record company did not want it released, and how he changed a song he had written for Ringo Starr into a hit tribute song to his ex-band mate John Lennon and the surprise guest appearances that made it a terrific album and single for Beatles fans. Check out the abandoned songs and what actually happened to them. See items from my extensive collection and what could make it onto a deluxe box set of the album Somewhere in England.

It’s interesting to note that Flying Hour when released in the book and later on iTunes was a very different mix with count-in and is of a longer length and runs at normal speed. Lay His Head as the B-side of Got My Mind 7” and 12” is also an updated mix with an alternate vocal on the last line and a different fade. Tears of the World was eventually released on the remaster of 33 & 1/3 and is most definitely a different mix than the original aborted LP. Sat Singing remained unchanged but as stated in your video only released on the Genesis book. Also....many of the songs from the original LP have slightly different mixes than what ended up on the released album. Great channel and videos!

I remember the hype about this album, before release. Lennon even mentioned it in a 1980 interview. A very hard listen. Much of his solo material is if truth be told. He was bewildered and completely lost his footing here. I find Gone Troppo a much better piece of work, but with no promotional help from Harrison it went nowhere in the charts, which he really didn't care about as he was done with the business for a few years.

It seems that the Harrison estate thinks all we're interested in is remixes/outtakes of ATMP material. I would like people to know that George did much more post-Beatles than ATMP and Bangladesh. Early Takes Volume 1 was nice; where is volume 2? If Olivia and Dhani don't have the time or patience to deal with projects like this, they should turn them over to someone else. If Flaming Pine Tree is worthy of a lavish box set, then certainly Somewhere in England or George Harrison (1979) deserve similar treatment.

Sales on Early Takes Volume 1 were weak.I would love to get box sets for all of George's albums (and the rest of John's), but I'm not sure if there is really enough demand for them.

Thank you for the video. Nice piece of information there. I bought SIE back in July 1981, when it had just been released. Track "Tears of the world" was added to a CD issue of "33 & 1/3" I bought in the US some years ago.

love your review of Somewhere in England. I prefer the the first version because it flows all the way through while released album feels like 2 different time periods. I don't understand why they left Flying Hour on the album. It would have made a great single and it is the best track on the album.

Excellent Andrew, well researched. Great to see those Songs of GH books! I think you may have got the chart positions mixed up for All Those Years Ago as it was a much bigger hit in the US (No 2), No.9 in the UK according to the Neville Stannard book. You can tell 'Flying Hour' is a GH out-take by Steve Winwood's synthesizer alone! My favourite of the four 'lost' tracks.

Thanks again, Andrew! Awesome job. I have a Bootleg of SIE's 1st version on CD. The mixes are different and "Unconsciousness Rules" is Longer. So, In my humble opinion, (I'm being a bit picky here) "Save The World" on the Greenpeace album is one of the worst mixes I've heard of Geroge's songs. I love the version but the new vocals are too loud (Odd because so much of Harrison's work seems to have his vocals down in the mix, all though not all). Basically, the backing track seems too low. Especially the drums. This version would be nice to have a good re-mix, IMHO. Just my two pence worth. :)

An excellent video and hot on the heels of John Heatons reappraisal earlier this week. It would be great if you an John did a George discussion video a la Press to Play....... It beggars belief a record company could interfere with an ex-Beatles art but i guess they wanted something commercial for a single.... As much as i agree with you that an archive release would be great i think we'll be extremly lucky if we even get a 40th anniversay release. As a minimum they should put out a 40th vinyl release on record store day with original tracks and artwork. Great vid Andrew and please more George videos would be great. Maybe a what might be in an George archive collection style videos would be cool.

Greetings Andrew, Its disconcerting that the Harrison Estate has Not done anything good or caring for ALL of us George Harrison fans in releasing Deluxe issues or Box sets of his albums which The Lennon Estate and McCartney have done Great work in their collections and Reissues.-In regard to Somewhere in England I think the original version of this album with the four tracks of Sat Singing, Lay his Head, Flying Hour, and Tears of the World is by far superior than the final released version, Warner Brothers made a BIG mistake in deciding to reject 1st version of this album -My favorites on this album are Writings on the Wall, Life itself, That Which I Have Lost, and the tribute to John (and in someways a Beatle reunion of sorts with Paul and Ringo) All Those Years Ago.

Hi Andrew ,Its amazing the record company could refuse 4 tracks from an exBeatle .I like all the 4 dropped tracks originally getting them on the disc that came with Genesis Lyric book of Georges lyrics and then again when i purchased the Bootleg of the original album that you showed. I got Georges autograph in the early 80s too. It was much easier to do such things in those days.Regards

You’ve got the chart positions for “All Those Years Ago” wrong. In the UK, it reached #13 and #2 in the USA. The LP also hit #13 in the UK and #11 in America. The stupidly edited US single of “Teardrops” reached #102 in the US. I really wish the powers that be would release a nice 2-3 CD set of “Somewhere In England” with both versions of the album plus a bunch of bonus tracks. Note: The version of “Flying Hour” intended for the 1980 LP is far superior to the 1988 remix. Harrison deliberately sped up and edited it for the album. Even though it plays at the correct speed, the unedited 1988 remix drags, lacks and adds a guitar riff here and there and, most annoyingly, fades at the end. To me, the 1980 version of “Flying Hour” is the greatest song of all time. Bar none.
