We had a chance to meet up Ste Kulov and Nick Mueller of HD Retrovision at MAGFest 2015 in Washington, DC. After a successful Kickstarter campaign, the two are creating component cables for retro consoles to make them look better on televisions with supported inputs.
We talk to them about the origins of the project, the challenges of building a high quality cable for a specific market, and what they might do in the future.

I want to hop in and say how awesome the HD Retrovision guys are. Throughout my journey to learn everything I can about RGB and optimal console output, I have reached out to them several with questions, comments, and concerns. Each and every time, they have taken the time to respond, not once, not twice, but consistently until I understood the topics at hand. And they do all this on top of working hard in their spare time to bring gamers like us an awesome product. These guys embody the definition of passion for one's craft. HD Retrovision is a labor of love, and I can't wait to see where they go as a company.

+Andrew Czudak [Try4ce] They really are awesome. They KNOW their stuff, and they're some of the coolest and friendliest people I've ever met. They've probably analyzed the output of these systems more than anyone else, and truly understand what's going on in there. In the time since we did this interview one year ago, they've also helped us out so much in our own understanding of RGB, and given us ideas for subjects and considerations to investigate! They're truly tireless in their efforts, and have put so much into ensuring that their product is going to be as accurate and high quality as possible. I worry they don't sleep enough, though!

+My Life in Gaming Glad I'm not the only one who feels this way! See that everyone? HD Retrovision helps you out even if you DIDN'T make an awesome mini-documentary on them! In all seriousness though, I love how friendly this community is. Come for the improved retro visuals, stay for the camaraderie! Speaking of help though, if you guys ever need some backup for shooting/editing/vfx, feel free to reach out! I do a lot of post work professionally, and would love to work on something with you guys!

+Andrew Czudak [Try4ce] Cool, thanks for the offer! It really is amazing how friendly and welcoming the RGB community is. We were afraid that people wouldn't be too accepting of us trying to "make it easy," but people seem so willing to help us get accurate and comprehensive info out there. It's been great!
@kazoodac
@kazoodac 8 лет назад
Of course! As for "making it easy", I think it's critical! You guys explain things in a way that allows viewers to ease their way into the topic, while also encouraging and enabling them to learn more! This process is crucial to easing into any subject, and you guys have it down to an art. Keep up the awesome work!

I just emailed them a couple of days ago asking how easy it would be to convert an HD retrovision SNES cable to Genesis pinouts seeing as their out of stock on the Genesis cables. Within 15 minutes I got a reply from Nick explaining to me that the cables have different circuitry, and that it would be a non-trivial task. I thanked Nick for his quick response, and mentioned that I hadn't expected any response at all, but I figured I would try to at least ask them if it was possible. I also praised him for the work that they're doing for the retro gaming community. My response was met with a final reply from Nick explaining that he wishes they could do more for the community. You're absolutely correct in saying these guys have passion for what they do. They're certainly not just doing it for the money.

This is a really exciting product, because no matter how perfect the Framemeister is, not many people want to spend $400+ just to hook their SNES up to a TV. Not every TV works with 240p, but if you've got one that does, these cables would be an extremely more affordable way to get a good quality signal out. I tested my SNES on my two display devices over composite video. My Dell U2711 monitor makes a terrible mess of it, resulting in ugly combing artifacts. My Epson 8345 projector, though, handles the input perfectly, and does a much better job of minimizing the ugly composite artifacts too. I feel like with these cables, my Epson projector should produce nearly as good an image as a Framemeister would! I just hope they have a lot of extras to sell, because the kickstarter was over by the time I heard about these cables.

I wish HD Retrovision made it clear on their website that they're just transcoding RGB signals into Y/Pb/Pr. They're being honest about it here, to some extent, but I've found anywhere else they've got some people convinced that component video from a Genesis etc is a real thing just from their lack of information in regards to what the cable is actually doing.
@nickmueller2883
@nickmueller2883 7 лет назад
Transcoding RGB->YPbPr is only one of the things our circuit does. And if you visit our website, you will find more information there about what we're doing than almost any company I can think of publishes about what they're doing. It's not our fault that people don't read. Here you go, enjoy! www.hdretrovision.com/blog/2014/8/21/behind-the-pixels-scart-rgb

Thank you guys once again, for pursuing such a cool retro endeavor! I can't wait to open up my wallet for a set of these cables. Long have I wondered what it'd be like to play my 16 bit consoles with the video signals sent through component connection. I noticed a great deal of improvement when I connected my Wii, PS2 and GC via component cable. Especially when connected to a CRT model that supports component. The picture is beautiful! Godspeed gentlemen. ;)

I remember hearing about this while in the Kickstarter phase, and thinking it was a great idea. Ste and Nick seem like cool guys, and with the recent boom of retro gaming, this seems like the perfect time to release a product like this. The market is definitely there, and for people who (understandably) don't want to pay the cost of the XRGB mini, or a Sony PVM, this looks like the perfect alternative to get a great picture out of your retro consoles. Great job, guys.

Just got the Genesis cables with the Saturn adapter last week and was blown away by how much better my Saturn games looked on my LCD. Everything is so much brighter and sharper now, and text looks much cleaner. I just wish the Elgato could capture 240p through component, so I could use these cables for reviews/livestreams. Guess I need to get an OSSC or Framemeister. :)

This is really cool. I just checked out their website and signed up for their mailing list. I've been having issues with local recordings via Genesis 2 RGB going into my Framemeister. I don't know if it's a sync problem, but maybe using component instead will help. It looks like the HD Retrovision cables should be available soon as of this writing.

I just watched most of your channel, and I gotta say I love how you guys have a much more professional attitude than many of your contemporaries. I feel like you always have something to actually say about games, rather than rambling on about "TEH GARPHIX" because you don't like the game. People with interesting stories and a mind for tight writing really engage a lot better than those who come at something from such a distance and probably never beat the game. The concepts for your video series' are also great and really something I've been looking for. As for this video particularly, I am DYING to get my hands on N64 cables for an HD TV. I know solutions exist, but they are unreliable and these guys seem to actually put a lot of thought into the technical side so that we don't have to. I'd totally jump on this if I collected for either console and I'm excited to see what they'll do in the future.

AguyinaRPG [Try4ce] Wow, thanks so much! This is one of the best compliments we've received. We're glad you enjoyed going through our earlier videos too. We're always surprised ourselves when we check and realize how many we've created already! While these cables are made for the systems that have RGB natively built in, it's POSSIBLE that they'll work with an RGB-modded N64. I have an RGB-modded N64 myself, and once I have my hands on a final version of these cables, I'll be sure to confirm or deny if they're compatible in a future video!

Awesome, thank you my friend. I will really be pushing for this channel in the future. I've lately found myself really wanting something different from the standard review format, and because I'm very historically inclined (working on a project myself) I very much enjoy that bit of context, both personal and company related. Keep it up and you guys will really get places.

Thank God for HD Retrovision. They have made a huge contribution to the retro gaming scene. I have the SNES and Genesis HD Retrovision component cables, and they really do clean the consoles up nicely. You can even use them on a CRT that has component and it looks great. I mostly use mine with the RetroTINK 2X on my HD tv, but sometimes I still like to use them on my CRT.

It's a good idea for those who already have older HDTVs that can accept a 240p signal and able to scale it to be visible. A lot of new HDTVs do not accept 240p or it will detect a sync, but it has no way of scaling that signal to be displayed. They might as well get going on making a video scaler of their own and address some of the fall backs of the XRGB-mini: The amount of time it takes to sync the input takes way too long when switching between resolutions (like game menus) or game systems or games. The issues with some interlaced signals not being output properly and also an all metal housing, or maybe stronger plastic. Add on a freaking VGA input for Dreamcast and I'll be happy. They should work on making proper automatic component switch boxes as well that have at least 4 inputs and range up to 8 inputs for those that want all of their systems hooked up. And if they want to appeal to the RGB crowd then they should offer a 8 or 10-way SCART switch for those of us who can never go back after seeing RGB is all of its beauty.

I finally purchased one of these cables for the Genesis, along with the recently released Sega Saturn adapter, I was able to test this on 2 of my flat screens, my CRT, and on my main TV through my Framemeister in comparison to using RGB SCART through the Framemeister, using my Genesis, 32X, and Saturn. On my CRT, the games looked amazing, and superior to using either S-Video, or a SCART to YPbPr transcoder. On my flatscreens, they were not fully compatible, where the Genesis and 32X would not work on one TV, and everything else that worked would be displayed as 480i. However through the Framemeister, I could not tell any difference in quality between HD Retrovision's components and RGB SCART cables. I am no in the process of replacing all my SCART cables with HD Retrovision component cables, to open up more additional options for video switchers, eliminate the need of a transcoder to my CRT, and to simplify my set up over all. Also, I plan on picking up a new Samsung soon, so I am hoping for the added bonus of the cables working directly with that TV as well.

Hi. Thanks. Cool. Necessity, passion and love is truly the mother of great inventions. Hehe, we had a Genesis (donated to the church, a Dreamcast given to me by a friend, started my retro gaming) but our first was a Famicom and before that the Atari (which still has the best controller- maybe besides the Neo Geo AES). Small world! I was just talking to Ste in email and sending him links to My Life in Gaming videos, and here he is getting interviewed by them! Although I now own a Framemeister, I'm still a full supporter of the project and have donated for both cables back when the Kickstarter was running. Mainly I like the portability and affordability of them, since there's no way I'm going to haul my Framemeister gear around to other people's houses.

I believe I have found an original model of SNES (Not the SNS-101) which is incompatible with the current revision of HD Retrovision cables. It's a (CPU: 2, PPU1: 1, PPU2: 3) Serial #UN288911241 I've been using this since the 90's and it works perfectly through both composite and Svideo, but when connected through the HD Retrovision YPbPr component cable to my Samsung HDTV I get a black screen/no audio and "Signal Not Supported". When connected to my Sony Wega 27" CRT via component it looks like severe ghosting and rolling image. Almost like a color version of what it looks like connecting a PAL video source to an NTSC display. I have a photo of it, but I'm not sure I can post URL's here. So it's my name Videogameobsession then a D0TC0M. and finally /photodump/NA/SNES_CPU2_PPU1_PPU2-3_03.jpg . If you put that altogether. I should also say that this SNES was connected using the same exact Nintendo branded A/C adapter as the SNES which works perfectly with the HDRetrovision cable, which happens to be this version SNES >> (CPU=1, PPU1=1, PPU2=1) . If anyone has any ideas why this would be or something I could try to get this working I'd love to hear it. I'd just keep the model that works with the HDRetrovision cable, but it belongs to my friend, who has already ordered a cable for himself (Thanks to me!) Argh... Now I need to get mine working somehow, preferably without having to buy yet another SNES system.

I'll always say that you should hook up your consoles to a CRT (via RGB or component if possible). They're free and easy to find. They're bulky, but you should only have to move them once and then have it stay put. Having the games in their natural resolution on a tv that is built to display that resolution. Best looking scanlines you can get as well and absolutely no lag, light gun compatible etc.

you know I just realized something, if you have an HD retrovision cable for super Nintendo or sega genesis modle 1 or 2 and a XRGB mini, Don't even bother with your TV's component video inputs, just feed them through the XRGB mini's D-Terminal input, because it'll the image a lot sharper since it's 240p cleanly upscaled to 720p or 1080p and then spat out via HDMI

I have HD Retrovision's cables for SNES, Genesis, and PS3, and am looking for a video capture device to use for live streaming. I'd like to avoid Roxio due to their policy regarding the software, and also want to try to keep the cost down if possible. I'd be willing to buy the El Gato HD if that's the best option, but if there is a good cheaper option that works I'd prefer that. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.
@mylifeingaming
@mylifeingaming 5 лет назад
[Try4ce] I'd be reluctant to buy Elgato. I've never used one of their cards, and they've certainly earned a prominent name in the capture business, but as far as I've heard, their track record for accepting signals from retro consoles is not great. Even when using devices like the RetroTINK or OSSC, certain consoles can cause problems with Elgato (at least some Elgatos, but I'm not sure which ones). If you are looking to capture the native 240p resolution from the consoles, without passing it through an HDMI upscaler first, you might need to look into a card like the PEXHDCAP60L by StarTech, which accepts virtually any weird resolution or signal.

Any ideas how well these would work with PAL consoles. Would be great for recording gameplay as composite isn't ideal at all and I don't think an adaptor exists for the Elgato that would take SCART. Also, would that SNES cable work with N64 too? I tend to use the GC composite cable for my SNES and N64.
@The8BitDuke

Based on what they mention about the different internal revisions of the SNES to make sure the cable worked, my gut says no! Looks like there's a lot of stuff going on with the inserted circuit board in the cable.

@HDRetrovision

Our goal is to have a universal cable for PAL and NTSC. We've got both types of consoles in house for testing. If anything comes up that makes that impossible, we can always go to the less desirable option of having region-based cables. As for the N64, our cable won't work with it because it doesn't have RGB at the output. Some N64s are moddable in a way that you could bring RGB to the outputs, but since we haven't tested this setup, it's possible the output levels would be wrong and not work properly. Having said that, we encourage people to experiment with modded N64s and let us know how it works out.
@mylifeingaming
@mylifeingaming 9 лет назад
Mellow Gaming [Try4ce] Most of these questions are answered in the FAQ at the bottom of their Kickstarter: www.kickstarter.com/projects/hdretrovision/sega-genesis-and-super-nintendo-component-cables It won't work with N64, because N64 doesn't natively output RGB. However, it MAY work with RGB-modded N64 systems, depending on how the mod is done, but their focus for now is on systems that natively support it. You can try it with a modded N64 and see.
@MellowGaming
@MellowGaming 9 лет назад
Sounds good. Glad the Mega Drive cable supports Master System too. I only have RF cables for that which I'm pretty sure are classed as a human rights violation now. I had forgotten the N64 didn't support RGB. In the UK they came with a Composite cable and had a little SCART adaptor on them. Kinda assumed regular RGB SCART would have existed too.

Thanks again, guys, for making this project a reality. I still think that these cables are the best solution for a lot of gamers that want to play their classic consoles without dropping the cash on an XRGB or some other conversion hardware. I can't wait for these cable to ship and I'll probably even be upgrading my LCD TV to a Samsung that handles 240p processing better than my current TV (I also have an old Trinitron WEGA). For those who are uncertain, it's pretty easy to test your TV for 240p support with the guide on HD Retrovision's page www.hdretrovision.com/240p , or use the 240p test suite. junkerhq.net/xrgb/index.php/240p_test_suite .

IICrossII [Coury] well, it'll effectively do what plugging a SCART cable directly into your tv would do (if we had ports for them in the US). The cable does not upscale the image at all, but makes the SD signal clearer on an HDTV

Dreamcast cable?

I have a question for the guys at My Life In Gaming: What is the quality difference between YPbPr component and RGB? Is it minute or rather noticable? What I'm saying is, do you believe getting these cables is just as good an option as RGB+Upscaler? Also, (this question really should be put on RGB103, but screw it I'm here now) do you predominately use RGB SCART cables with or without CSYNC? And how hard are RGB SCART CSYNC cables to find compared to Sync-On-Composite?
@mylifeingaming
@mylifeingaming 9 лет назад
RarefoilB [Coury] Well, it depends. The quality is generally the same for most sources, but sometimes component introduces a slight bit of noise. I've also found that the YPbPr needs a bit more color tweaking to get right. Will component cables into a HDTV look as good as it would through RGB and an Upscaler? Definitely not - HD Retrovisions cables will improve picture from these old systems, but in the end they're still passing the standard definition signal to a HDTV so it'll still be soft, not even close to the razor sharp pixels using an upscaler. Now, using their cables and an Upscaler like the Framemeister? That'll look really great. We try to get our cables with CSYNC if possible, retro_console_accessories on eBay is great for selling the cables with it and it'll state it directly in the title of the listed item. The do offer some sync-on-composite cables, but I'm finding less and less are offered due to not being as good - unless the system only supports it.

It should also be noted that the output provided by these cables looks OUTSTANDING when run through the Framemeister via a component to D-Terminal adapter. I'd even say that it's on par the picture that can be obtained from RGB via SCART into the Framemeister (perhaps even better depending on the SCART cable in question). Of course, HD Retrovision's cables are more expensive than SCART RGB cables, but one advantage is that one can use the same cable with the Framemeister and consumer CRTs that have component video inputs.

My tv detects 240p signals from my SNES, Genesis and PS1 AS 240p! And playing my ps2 with component cables playing ps1 games does the same. But 240p on said tv via component looks like ass.

Why are their genesis and snes component cables twice the cost of their wii and ps2 cables?
@mylifeingaming
@mylifeingaming 3 года назад
[Try4ce] The reason is pretty straightforward actually. There is an RGB to YPbPr (component) conversion circuit in the SNES and Genesis cables. While PS2 and Wii already output component without a conversion. The PS2 and Wii cables don't do anything unique, they are just straight cables, but they are definitely very high quality. A lot of bad cheap PS2 component cables out there that have a lot of video noise and audio buzz.

Oke it sounds nice to finaly have componnent cables for retro consoles,BUT the output is still 240p ,so what if your HDTV don't accept 240p input? Then your are forced to buy a upscaler for it, to make it work.

I’ve got an SNES HD Retrovision cable that doesn’t work on my Sony Bravia TV. It does however display my PS1 240p games and ICO over my PS2’s component cable. I know it’s accepting a 240p signal because my old TV would blank screen at the PS1 and ICO 240p content. Any thoughts to why the TV isn’t locking onto the 240p from the SNES cables? Is the 240p from the PS1/2 component different than the 240p coming from the SNES HD Retrovision cable?
@mylifeingaming
@mylifeingaming 3 года назад
[Try4ce] Hmm that's unusual, but every console outputs analog video a bit differently. NES and SNES in particular have kind of a weird quirk where the top scanline changes in length every other frame. This can be visible on NES but it's outside the area on SNES where graphics are rendered. The purpose of this is actually to manipulate the signal in a way that somehow improves the quality of composite video (weird but true, analog video is strange). But the downside (years later) is that it causes problems with digital TV systems sometimes. So I think that's most likely what's going on... unless you're using it on a SNES "Jr." console, which doesn't output RGB unless you mod it.

@@mylifeingaming it’s an SNS-001. Someone suggested that it’s a difference in the hz and FPS that my TV can’t pick up. I wish there was something else I could put on the HD Retrovision cable besides a processor. It’s so damn close! If it’s a simple solder job adding something on the SNES then maybe I could do it.

@@mylifeingaming I bought an Eon Super 64 and so far I’m happy with it. My TV’s “game mode” setting actually does very good for analog progressive and interlaced signals. Therefore, I’d send the Eon back and get a Retrotink 2X Pro, for its component inputs and s video. I want to see what N64’s interlace pass through looks like in my TV. Mike Chi told me though that I’d have to unplug the s video every time I want to use the component for the SNES. He said one console at a time or it messes with the tink
@mylifeingaming
@mylifeingaming 3 года назад
[Try4ce] Yeah generally plugging in more than one thing into the TINK can degrade the quality. There is a mod for SNES called "dejitter" that may solve your problem. However I believe it may reduce the quality of composite video (not sure, never used the mod).
@KCarubia
@KCarubia 3 года назад
@@mylifeingaming yeah, mods... I haven’t done any yet. I want to exhaust the best qualities I can get before modding. I also luckily have a TV with a decent component/composite that handles the lag very well in game mode. Now I’m considering returning the HD Retrovision cable (and Retrotink Pro idea) for a RAD2X on my SNES. I’d keep the EON Super 64.

Can I use this cable for Nintendo 64 Japanese or American version?
@mylifeingaming
@mylifeingaming 2 года назад
[Try4ce] Not easily, no. It works by converting RGB to component, but N64 doesn't natively support component. There are several RGB modding options for N64 however, so it does work on modified consoles. My best recommendation for people who just want a good usable signal for N64 but don't want to get too deep into the weeds is the RetroTINK Mini, which comes with an N64 compatible S-video cable and treats the image as nicely as you're likely to get without getting into mods.

Considering that analog inputs are pretty much fading away from modern TVs, an upscaler won't be an option fin the near future. Still, I'm happy these guys made their product, gives people more options at the moment.

I can't help but feel that someone with a lot of retro consoles would be better served by a single SCART-to-component converter. It'd be functionally identical and, in the long run, probably cheaper and easier than buying/making specialized cables for each individual console. Can't deny the convenience factor of this, though, and it's nice to hear about some of the research they've done on 240p compatibility in modern TVs. EDIT: If these cables aren't actually scaling anything, then the "HD" in HD Retrovision is kind of a misnomer. :P

For people with a lot of consoles, sure... But for somebody like me (who just wants a good way to hook up his SNES to modern stuff), that approach would require me to enter the world of rare and confusing sort-of-scart-but-really-some-Japanese-standard cables...
@zigmeisterful
@zigmeisterful 6 лет назад
Not all SCART to component converters are created equal, and you'll find by reading user reviews for every converter out there that they all have their issues, and often have to be tweaked to work correctly for each console. As Ste has mentioned in this video, the signals that each console outputs, and even the signals for different revisions between each console can be different, and they've tweaked their cables accordingly to make them work in the best way possible for the various consoles out there.
