The Story of John Wesley Hardin - Old West Outlaw/Gunslinger

Trying something a little different with this video. While I was in El Paso, TX I was able to visit the grave of a famous old west gunslinger, John Wesley Hardin. I did a little research and realized his life was very interesting. So this video is just a drop in the bucket of his life.

Hello, i am from Wales, in the UK. I really enjoyed your post, i grew up watching westerns and looked in awe at the US and its history of these gunmen, lawmen and how it progressed, then died out. I hope you produce more of these historical posts. Huge fan from over the pond.

You did a very nice job. I am a distant descendent of JWH and have read both his autobiography and his biography written by someone else so I am very jealous that representation of him is correct...so many get it wrong or sensationalize or villainize him. I think you did well, I believe you portrayed both his good qualities and bad accurately within the time constraints of trying to capture the essence of a man in 15 minutes.

There is one thing I have wondered about Hardin many years. His father was a preacher, telling gospel from place to place. So John knew Bible for sure, including "thou shall not kill" or "who lives with a sword, shall die by sword" . Still he became one of worst killers Texas has ever seen. Concerning his background it looks strange. Of course many hated Hardin, and he got few bullet wounds. Once he was shot by shotgun, getting bullets to his stomach. He lived with gun and died by gun. Men like Hardin always claim that they kill for self defence only. But that is only half-true. Probably Hardin provoked some fights to get a reason to kill someone. If you kill over 20 people, it can not be always self defence. Regards, Rudi Rafael.

I have family who fought for both sides in the civil war and after the war northern troops occupied the South and regularly did horrific deeds to southern people. My family owned no slaves but two of my distant cousins were tourtered by Union troops just for laughs. That's why many became outlaws or broke a few laws

Absolutely right and really wasn't trying to be rude to the teller of the story just know Hardins story. Like you said his dad a methodist minister. By all accounts a good looking kid brought up well. He went bad at 14 with a class mate he got in a fight with. Had a knife on him. Said he would have killed the other kid if it hadn't been broke up. Think it was over a girl. Within a year of that he did kill for the first time. Finally imprisoned in 1878. He claimed he had killed 44 men. Know he got charged with less but some say he probably wasn't to far off. 15 years later received a pardon and while imprisoned of all things studied law. Smart man obviously.. Got out. Started practicing law in El Paso and was gunned down soon after. As you said and I whole heartedly believe. Live by the sword die by the sword. Hey thank you and again was not my intention to be rude to the narrator. Man I just love western history of all sorts.

Hardin is reputed to have been one of the coldest killers from the Old West, favoring both guns and knives. An example of the hardness of the man is the confirmed story of Hardin considering the purchase a gun, and trying the gun out with aiming at and shooting at a man who was walking on the boardwalk on the other side of the street, essentially using the man a a moving target. Hardin killed the man with the single shot.

I will say that Hardin was shot in the front I hunt and have seen deer shot with the .44 Winchester it fires a Smith and Wesson pistol bullet, very close to if not the same bullet he was killed with. Anyways what I observed Was a hole the size of the bullet where it entered and a ragged hole 2-3 times the size of the bullet at the exit. And the bruising/trauma is 2-3 inches back from, and surrounding the exit wound, the entrance wound had like a half inch of purple bruising around it. He was definitely shot in the front no doubt in my mind!

Hardin bragged of having pulled the Road Agent's Spin stunt on Wild Bill, of having been singled out and recognized by Wild Bill for his gun handling prowess, and for paling around with Wild Bill; however, Wild Bill asserted he had never known or had any involvement with Hardin. Wild Bill was a superlative fast draw artist and an effortless killer. Once he had cleaned up Abilene, his quick-to-kill temperament and loose interpretation of the law caused the townsfolk to encourage him to move on. The Road Agent Spin is a well known and recognizable pistol stunt, and Wild Bill would have likely killed anyone trying it on him. While they were both in Abilene while Wild Bill was Sheriff, historians generally believe Hardin greatly admired, and stayed clear of, Wild Bill.

Probably one of the greatest gun fighters of all time. He was evidently an amazing gun handler and practiced fast draw techniques until his death. He was shot in the back of the head because the shooter was no doubt afraid to face him in a fair fight. Its hard to appreciate how good some of these men of that day were guns.
