When Alexander Graham Bell discovered that sound could be carried by light, he never could have imagined the millions of written text and audio and video communications that would one day be transmitted around the world every second on a single strand of fiber with the dimensions of a human hair.
Follow the journey of a single text message zipping around the globe at the speed of light, then meet the researchers that have taken up Bell’s charge.

It is not what American children learn in school: "On June 15th, 2002, the US Congress officially recognized that the Italian inventor Antonio Meucci is to be credited for the invention of the telephone, and not Alexander G. Bell, as so far claimed.

Hello, maybe it's a stupid question, but I'm just a painter and decorator, so I know almost nothing about the physics of light. My question is, during the quantoum effect a particle can be split up Into two identical particles, where the space between then is equal. So, why don't they usw this phenomenon at light ? Because, it would double that and a very high transmission can be reached by an existing system. Thank you and sorry for my bad English, but I"m from Bavaria. cu Toni

Toni, thank you for your interesting comment. Quantum mechanics does not claim that a particle can be split into two identical particles. Quantum mechanics is hard (impossible?) to understand without having advanced mathematics in your toolset. We recommend that you study this topic in greater detail, for instance through textbooks.
