It is odd that the three co-robbers are never mentioned again. You would have thought that maybe one of them, on their deathbed or something, told their story and gave up the guy's name or some backstory. So fascinating. Thanks for sharing these incredible stories..

I wonder why no one has suggested to excavate the grave in order to obtain DNA from the bones so they can confirm the robber’s identity. Assuming that the men suggested have descendants we could do a comparison. I know a university in New York State tried to do that with the body of the Leatherman. Unfortunately all they found were rusted nails.

Man, I love these stories. Almost all of my family is from CT, and all from small-ish towns like this. My Great Grandfather was the head type setter for the 'big' news paper in Danbury. I imagine that he saw many of these stories go to print. You could make an entire career out of researching and presenting this sort of hyper-local lore, and never run out of material in CT alone.

This is just my opinion on who wrote the mysterious letter, but I definitely think it was the Woman in Black, and let me explain why based on two reasons: The handwriting and her constant visits to the grave for practically her whole life. She must've fallen in love with this handsome rogue enough to want to warn the Watchman of this burglary. She must've pleaded XYZ to leave this life behind but he was too stubborn to do so. In her mind, writing that letter would probably put visible guards in front of the bank or at least have the lights on inside for guards to be seen visible, swarting the burglary from ever happening. She probably didnt count on there only being one watchman hiding in the dark ready to aim fire at first instance, and she definitely didnt think XYZ would be the first to break in. A woman visiting a grave on an annual basis like that, most likely from Albany (as this was where he told Farley he'll owe him back), indicates guilt to me. In her mind she got him killed. I absolutely could be wrong but it resonates the most logically to me. I love your videos, I really do hope this channel explodes. Billions of lives lived equals billions of stories to tell!

Never heard.of the XYZ grave.I, here in Texas.Heard of John Wesley Hardin.He and his wife Jane and their kids lived in Rancho,Texas, .It's a ghost town near Nixon ,Texas East of here.His wife Jane is buried in the Mound Creek Cemetery around the Gillette area.Mound Creek was a community but all that,s left is the cemetery..Lot of great stories in the state.

Bank watchman gets letter warning about robbery. Is the only person to claim to see more than one other person, who happened to have the watchman's own tools. Then the watchman needs to really get out of dodge because of more anonymous letters. Sure sounds like watchman Tyler used the whole thing as a way to take out XYZ, and get away with it.

Interesting. I'm looking through my genealogy records. My husband's mother was a King. They were all up in Troy, Albany and Lansingburgh, NY. They also worked on the railroad. There is some pretty good documentation on the family because Steve King and Marshall King were early baseball players with Marshall playing for the White Stockings. I'll see if I can find a man that completely disappears.

Reminds me of a bank robber who attacked a town near me in the Dillinger era when "everybody" was trying for fast money and fame. Bullet holes remain today in buildings along the main street, where both sides went at each other with vigor. As the robbers tore off in their getaway car (minus any loot), they dumped the body of their dead companion onto the road. He is buried in the town cemetery. You can take an historic tour to see it and hear the story. My guess is there were a lot of unidentified bodies in the old days. We have at least one person in my family tree who simply wasn't there anymore. Went to California? In a shallow grave just outside of town? We'll never know. My question with this story is who wrote to warn the bank about the impending attack? That person probably knew the identity of the dead man.

Heh, maybe your ancestors are one of my relatives. Im from the pacific nw- the jumping off point of alaska, and the european side of my family goes back here like 6 generations to the 1830s - ancient for european descended people here. And I have people in my family tree who just appeared. Trying to trace them back anywhere further doesnt work. Maybe they were people who wandered west hoping to strike it rich out here, changed their names, and left everything behind.

Amazing video as always! It sounds to me, without any hard proof, that the watchman may of originally been part of the robbery gang. I think he had a change of heart for one reason or another and sent a letter to the bank informing them of the impending robbery. When the bank didn't heed his warning (or did) he went there and offered to be a watchman citing the recent letter they mysteriously received. They hired him. From there, the remaining robber gang, with HIS tools which they probably agreed to use prior to his defection, attempted to enter the bank with the same plan he probably was privy to when in the planning stage. He then fired, killed XYZ. From there, he received death threats from the remaining robber gang because he was a traitor and killed one of their own; perhaps family even. He couldn't tell the public of his connection to the gang, so he used the threat letters as reason to claim he needed to leave (rightfully so), and did. Meanwhile, the female love interest (or family member) of XYZ contacts the watchmen via letter asking to identify the grave so she can visit, without putting actual names on it to prevent connection to her or anyone else affiliated with XYZ (like the robber gang members). She then used XYZ as her marker to know where to go when visiting for the decades to come. Just some thoughts!

Great video as always. I'm kind of reminded of an article by Robert A. Caro, titled "Anatomy of a 9$ Burglary", not as much for the actual events, but because just like that article, this story makes you think of the shadow a small event can cast in the lives of people involved that's not in any way revealed by a simple factual description. Okay, the comparison doesn't make much sense, but the article jumped to mind from this. I think you'd find it a good read. I mainly just feel bad for the watchman to be honest. All he did was carry out his duty, but ended up really badly affected mentally.

Man this is just the best channel on the dang website. 12 years of school and four(ish lol) of college couldn't get me to give a single log about history because all they cared to talk about was empire and wars and billionaires and uncritical exploitation. But here I am, halfway through your catalogue covering a part of the country I've never visited myself, excited to see every video about some yesterday's somebody. There's a powerful value-based shift in perspective to evaluate history as a collection of many human-sized individuals as opposed to the implied god-link stature of "great men" (gross) but I reckon I'm sticking around just as much for the storytelling. Really good stuff, thanks for making it.

You do sound the type who would not be interested in history if your uncritical thinking or indoctrinated bias is anything to go by. History is a story about the past lives of people and some of it you may not ‘approve’ of but, so what, it is still history. You sound as though you are of the younger generation ( Gen Z maybe) who gets upset and triggered by any harsh words or hearing of violence in the past. What is wrong about hearing of ‘great men’ (which you describe as gross) of the past? ? For your information it is important to know history as it does help to try to ensure people do not commit the same mistakes again. However, because the younger generations have not been taught this or not been bothered about it, that is why we have many of the problems we have today, repeating many of the mistakes from the past. Smh.

I love these stories. I'm from Bridgeport, CT and my mom claimed P.T Barnum grave is booby trap because of grave robbers. I could never find anything that says it true. I think it was just a rumor but a good mystery.

I wonder about Tyler's connection to the "robbery". He was a new hire, hired because of a letter received by the bank. He was the one who stated there were four men. He was the only surviving witness to the events. His tols were being used. And he left shortly afterwards. Znd has anyone seen (read) the letters he received after?

There is so much weird stuff in this story that makes no sense or goes unanswered - note informs bank they are gonna be attacked, send a single man to guard it - three other men where stated to be present but mysteriously disappear from the story after XYZ is shot - the chisel used to break into the place was stolen hours earlier from the guard who killed XYZ -the fact people where unsure if they even regonized him or not - an odd connection to railroading in Albany - annomyous death threats to Terry about XYZ (possibly the 3 other guys?) - not only did one of those letter asked him to be called XYZ on his grave but asked TERRY spefiecally to do it - a mysterious black dressed woman appears every few years to visit XYZ's grave until 1947

Wow, you are really working my neighborhood! We lived in Deep River for 10 years and EVERYBODY knew the story of XYZ and the woman in black, and everybody (including me) knew an old guy or two around town who would swear they had seen her back in the day. I can confirm that this story is most definitely not considered folklore in Deep River, and none of the locals think the lady in black was made up just to keep things interesting. Lots of stories and secrets in these little New England towns….

Ok… theory here: perhaps the letter that request XYZ on the marker is the same woman who visited the grave annually. Maybe she needed it marked so she’d know where to visit.

XYZ marks the spot to an F.E. King mystery. It’s F.E. King interesting, unless that’s not actually his F.E. King name (what's in a name? That which we call the grave of an unknown alleged burglar, by any other name would lie the same). Certainly a curious occurrence. I would actually say one of the stranger points is why anyone would notify the bank in advance of an intended robbery.

Looks like a good place to be. There is all that loot sitting on the ground. Where I am now from (Nassau County, Long Island) those coins would be gone before they had a chance to bounce twice.
