The Varaha Mandapa at Mamallapuram in Tamil Nadu is a 7th-century rock-cut cave temple built by the Pallava kings. On a wall inside, you can see a beautifully carved sculpture called the Trivikrama panel. It tells the story of King Mahabali and Vamana, an avatar of Lord Vishnu. The popular version of this tale ends with the connection between Mahabali and the festival of Onam. But there is a lesser-known sequel to this story. It is one of the many charming stories that explain the origin of the festival of Raksha Bandhan (or Rakhi). The panel also tells the story of King Trishanku; you can see his image on one side of the panel, hanging upside down in an awkward position. Now how does he fit into this storyline? This short video will take you through all these fascinating stories from Hindu mythology.

Mam, I suggest a minor correction at 1:24 Mahabali was an Asura/Daitya, not a Demon. Unlike Demons, who are described as antigods in Abrahamic religions, many Asuras were devotees of God.

Odias call this day Gamha Purnami, where cattle is tied beautiful threads and worshipped along with the Earth goddess( Bhuin Debi). Also, it's believed that Sri Krishna and Radha begin their Monsoon adventures from this day and they are traditionally sat in bamboo swings and people imitate the Gopis, by swinging along with the divine couple and singing their praise, hence its also called Jhulana or Jhulana Jyatra.

I would like to point this out that its better not to call/indicate Asuras as demons. That is not accurate term or interpretation. Its better to call them what they really were Asuras as they were as mighty if not more as devas, and they were not evil.

Actually the boon was that Mahabali can come 3 times and we Maharashtrians celebrate the coming of bali raja on the third, forth or day ( according to the local tradition, in Maharashtra it’s considered 5th day) of Deepavali, which is bali pratipada, women make idols of cow dung depicting the bali rajyam which consists of gavlani (gopikas of bali rajyam), Draupadi- Pandavas and Bali raja and his wives. These are made from the dhanatrayodashi to bali pratipada each day the number of idols are increased and are worshipped everyday.

Nice story. But how would you explain why Rakshabandan is not celeberated in Kerala or in Tamilnadu traditionally, and same for oonam in the gangetic belt? Is this just you finding an interesting observation to make the story trail interesting, or you are seriously proposing it as a historical significance of those two celebrations that are distantly celebrated? 😀

Confusing! Raksha bandhan is not celebrated much in kerala and is not part of Malayali culture. Why is one festival(Onam) celebrated so widely in Kerala, while the other (Raksha bandhan) one is not much celebrated, as in other parts of India? One possibility is that there could be multiple kings named 'Mahabali' and the king Mahabali related to Onam is not the same as one related to Rakshabandhan. Feels like something is out of place with this conclusion.

If Brahmins really wanted to, they couldve made him as an evil man who had to be wiped out
@satheeshkumarvenkatesan6599
@@chinanumbawun111 he is literally being called "demon" king and the moral, a demon king however good he is, should not be let alive and Vishnu does the dirty job of wiping hin out. Unfortunately for Brahmins they could spin the story only to certain extent. They can't fabricate stories of these demon kings ever being cruel to his subjects. They needed a justification to kill him, that's all. Most temples in South India, both Saiva and Vaishnava have the same standard template for their Sthala purana or festivals. Some demon king (dark skinned with moustache) is given a boon by the gods, he becomes too powerful, captures all world's, becomes a threat to Devas ( fair skinned clean shaven poonul/ jeanu clan), uses the boon against gods. Now threatened devas seek some x god to save them. This god executes a peculiar plan to slay the demon. Vamana, Narakasura, Mahishasura, Hiranyan, Ravana.. list goes on. Between 8th to 14th centuries, lot of dravidian kings were assassinated by Brahmins. People continued to love those kings. Later these stories were spinned to appropriate their killing but not anger the subjects. Conquest of Aryans over Dravidian land.
