When we talk about the ‘greats’ of the past, although subjective, you may think of the likes of Aretha Franklin, Tina Turner, Diana Ross, Janet Jackson and many many others. These artists made a huge impact not only in the music world, but our lives giving us timeless hits that’ll be remembered for a lifetime. In the midst of all these great artists who definitely deserved their flowers, there are those who just weren’t able to reach that caliber of success within their own career. Yet, their impacts were felt nearly the same in different ways. One artist in particular being Phyllis Hyman. Responsible for hits like “Can’t We Fall In Love,” and “You Know How To Love Me.” She gained traction when she was featured on Norman Connors album “You Are My Starship” and the trajectory of her career looked promising. Despite her outgoing and comforting personality, what people didn’t know was the ongoing internal battle Phyllis was suffering from for quite some time. Bipolar Disorder and manic depression were spiraling behind the scenes and her music mimicked this often centering around love, and loneliness which continued to manifest into her life.

Phyllis Human’s story will always be tragic to me. Such a force to be reckon with, but was not marketed correctly. They wanted her to be a pop singer knowing good and well that wasn’t her niche. Phyllis laid out the groundwork for deep, husky contraltos for female vocalists like Toni and Anita Baker. I miss her a lot 😢. A beauty 🕊❤️

I think unfair for that person to say that Phyllis didn't try and didn't do the work to heal. Dealing with mental illness is a daily struggle and sometimes you do get tired. I believe she did try, and things eventually wore her down until she decided not to fight it any longer. Prayers for all who are dealing with mental illness 🙏🏽💜
@Kindred04

Exactly. It's not only unfair, but also incredibly ignorant. That person clearly has no idea what it's like to struggle with mental illness. I don't know why the person who created this video even bothered to quote an unknown source in the first place. Much of this video was nothing more than speculation and doesn't give justice to the incomparable Phyllis Hyman.

As someone who also suffers with bipolar disorder--there is a moment in our lives when we realize that we will never be happy. Or, that one day the meds will stop working. I am reading Strength of a Woman currently. I see so much of my own behavior. I pray her soul is free now.

@@TeeHeejab I don't have bipolar disorder, but I have struggled with severe depression and anxiety for the vast majority of my life. I'm 47 now, and to be honest I never expected to make it to this age. It's a struggle everyday to make the choice to stay here. And for me it is a conscious choice that I have to make everyday. People who have never experienced it have no idea what it's like. My ex once told me that I just didn't want to get better. That couldn't be further from the truth. I've accepted that no one really understands. No one stays by your side when you're at your lowest, at least that has been my experience. I wish you peace on your journey.

My beautiful sister suffered from bi-polar disorder and deep depression. On the outside looking in you would think she had it all, beautiful home, 2 beautiful children & a very supportive loving husband. She was always the life of the party whenever we had gatherings but at home, she was a different person. She kept herself locked in a dark room everyday and would only come out for food. She suffered terribly and I’m crying as I’m typing this because I miss her so much. She died in her sleep 2 yrs ago. No drugs were found in her system. She always said she was ready to die and she was just tired of life. I couldn’t understand it. Mental illness can tear a family apart.

I'm sorry about the loss of your sister. Your sister may have all the material things in life, but did she have God in her life and as her Lord and Savior because, He's the only one who can give the gift of eternal life with Him in Heaven, if they're willing to accept Him and believe. The enemy comes to steal, kill and destroy. Depression is a spirit, a mental bondage of the enemy. God doesn't have a spirit of confusion nor depression! He's an unconditional loving, healing God, and much more. A person can have all the money in the word and the material things in life, but they can't take it with them.

It was still something to see Whitney Houston months before what inevitably happened, though. And filming was a blast. Plus, Whitney's castmates made everybody feel more than comfortable. I was in College when Phyllis Hyman passed away. I still remember doing my Business Law homework on the floor in my Mom's room while I was watching one of my favorite programs on BET...then I heard of her passing. I dropped my pen and had forgotten my place that I was reading. I then began to channel surf until it was confirmed on CNN. I was confused and hurt at the same time because I remembered I just watched her do an interview on "Video Soul" (a repeat episode that wasn't too long ago) and the night before I just saw her in the movie "School Daze" (which to this day, is still my favorite movie). Needless to say, I didn't do my homework that night, instead I went through my Step-father's vinyl album collection and went through her stuff. As a kid growing up listening to her, I knew she was lonely somehow...but it's funny how much of an impact Phyllis Hyman had through all those melancholic love songs and albums. I still listen to her sometimes, and when I do, I like to pretend that she's still here. I guess that's my little way of keeping her memory alive.

Bipolar make you feel alone your emotions are exacerbated by the manic depression. What someone else may see as menial your feeling are hypersensitive during an episode. @11:27. That's very true... but as a black woman of her era, it may be possible that she simply didn't know that. As black people, we were conditioned to do everything for everyone of every other race and to think that we were nothing. As black people, a lot of us still don't understand that our love and success has to start from within and go outward from there. And even when we do understand that concept, this society is designed to keep us from knowing and loving ourselves or to knock us out of thinking that. So as a working class black girl in 1950's Philadelphia, it just might be possible that Phyllis Hyman never learned or understood just how to love herself and to recognize the gifts and beauty that resided within her.

I read Phyllis' book, "Strength Of A Woman." She suffered from bi-polar disorder, so much so, that she was taking medications usually prescribed for schizophrenia. Also, she strongly wanted to mold her own music direction in an industry that was strongly if favor of categorizing and boxing people in to "this" or "that" genre. Example: Clive Davis wanted to direct her career and image so badly, that when she recorded her album, "Goddess Of Love (1983)," which is considered by her true fans to be her best album, she taught herself to hate it just to get back at Davis. I got to see her perform in 1983 in San Francisco, and she featured some of the songs from "Goddess..." including the first big hit, "Riding The Tiger." Once she met all the obligations for promoting that album in live concerts by the end of 1993, she never again sang ANY of the songs from that album; again, just to try to stick it to Davis. Even though her biggest album was two albums and eight years away, she was broken in spirit, both by her mental illness and by the industry. If you get a chance, here on RU-vid, they feature a song from "Goddess..." titled "Your Move, My Heart." Fans can hear and feel her singing that song, NOT to a man, but to The Industry. Check it out. *You, you've got nothing to lose, *No, you leave that to me, *You, you do whatever you choose, *It's so nice to be free, *It's your move, it's your game, *But it's my heart... ... ... (Go and listen to it... DEEP, DEEP song...)

I shed some tears when she passed. I fell in love with her music in high school, and I still love her music today. She doesn’t get her props today, and there’s no one that can compare to her today. I learned a lot from this very informative video, things I didn’t know before. Great video. I’m definitely subscribing to your channel today.

I never heard about her being bisexual either. What proof did the narrator provide to support this claim? What Phyllis Hyman WAS, was a beautiful, talented, troubled young woman who left us much too soon. So sad she never got the help she desperately needed.

Phyllis Hyman was my all time favorite hands down my father introduced me to her in my teens I’ve seen her in concert many times. She was magical she could whistle and it would be so loud and beautiful and clear you would swear it was a instrument. And that sensual voice . She was the coldest .When she died I cried like a baby, but she lives on in my playlist and my heart.❤️

I was bisexual and had mental illiness issues. My family rejected me. I was confused by there actions. My lover of 15 years turned her back on me. Calling me ugly. I was thinking when I was spending my money and taking care of business I was not ugly . I asked why she was with me she said cause it felt good. Well 20 years later I saw her at church. She tryed to speak but I kept it moving. No more ladies for me . 2022 age 64. I take meds now. Two husband s. My first husband passed away in 2018. We had one son . He didn't help me take care of our son. But he is now 38 Iam married to my second husband. On paper 32 years but not together for 15 I still love him. When I told him I was bipolar . And depressed. He said go take your meds. I still love him. But he does not love.me. we have a 30 year old son. Hiram a otero sr if u read this remember I still love u.

She was my favorite voca Ist. Her and Teena Marie. I was sitting in my training class when I get word she killed herself. I was HURT. I loved her. It was like I lost a friend. Her talent was immeasurable. Her in Sophisticated Ladies show cased her vocal abilities. Mental Illness is real. Bipolar Disorder is a BEAST! I have a couple friends who suffer from this and one symptom is suicidal ideation. Clive was a bastard. He threatened her with her with up coming Whitney Houston. He wanted Phyllis to cross over and she wanted to stay true to herself so he replaced nand pored everything into Whitney. When he drained Whitney dry he replaced her with Jennifer Hudson.

I love Phyllis Hyman. I saw her in concert once, and she became my favorite artist. Unfortunately, when you have a mental illness, it will take over your life if you don't attend to it full time. It can become quite a conflict for a performer who works at her craft full time. But, if it's not taken care of faithfully, it many times will have the last word.

Weeks before Phyllis Hymans death, I had my first premonition that she took her own life. At the time, I thought it was(dejvu), until later in years the same things occurred with other people and so forth. I journal every experience. That Song " I Can't Stand This Livin" All Alone" said A LOT! In my P.O.V. by far that is her Signature Song/Best Recorded Performance! The Lyrics to the song address directly what the Narrator of this video said when she spoke about Phyllis & her LONELINESS & resulting DEPRESSION. Did Phyllis write that song? I'm guessing YES! The Passion & Pain she felt are EVIDENT ! It broke my heart when I heard she passed. Why did No One direct/push her TOWARD COUNSELING . Why did she end her relationship w/the Japanese man? I just wish she coulda found a way to Continue her Life, instead of Ending It. She Died Thinking & Feeling No One Loved!

She has SUCH a rich voice. Touring is a hard life. I've never heard another voice like hers. I think as women (esp in entertainment) we focus on our looks too. I think she got more depressed as she gained weight. I loved when she wore her own hair out full and flowing. I didn't care for the hats. I love listening to her sing. "Meet Me on the Moon", "A Sacred Kind of Love", "No One Can Love You More", " I Don't Wanna Lose You" are just a few of my favorites. Suicide is just not the answer. A short time after that I saw her on Mike Douglas (check out the RU-vid video) and here was this beautiful woman performing the song. She had it all. Looks, charm, wit, and a sense of humor.
