Riptide is an American detective television series that ran on NBC from 1984 to 1986, starring Perry King, Joe Penny, and Thom Bray. The show used a Sikorsky S-58-T helicopter, alias "Screaming Mimi".

Cool to learn that the Mimi served in Vietnam. Two of the show's main characters on Riptide were Nam vets if I recall correctly, which was why they were familiar with the helicopter.

What great memories of my childhood "Mimi" brings me. In Argentina the series was called "Muelle 56" (Pier 56).

Here in Italy, Riptide (like many other 80s series like A-Team, Automan etc.) was popular expecially with kids, mostly because the robot and the helicopter. It's so cool to discover that it's still not only in one piece but in such good conditions. Thank you very much for the video.

In the 80s I was a big fan of Pier 56, I watched the series before going to school, and as an airplane lover my favorite character was Mimi! Watching the video gave me great nostalgia, thank you, and great joy knowing that Mimi flew for so many years after the series, she even surpassed the legendary Airwolf that ended up crashing in Germany. I saw it when it was stored at Santa Monica Airport. It looked old and beat up ie exhaust carbon, dirt, bird droppings, grime and more. It was all painted on and it was in perfect flying condition.

Amazing that she is still working xD long after the show died. For some reason I got Riptide, and Magnum PI mixed up in my little kid brain, go figure!

Those old Sikorsky machines are extremely well made workhorses. There are still some in flying condition using their original radial engines. I heard the Airwolf Bell 222 was a rescue chopper in Germany and crashed into a mountain in bad weather. Sad end to an iconic bird.

Watched Riptide when I was a kid, it was a popular TV show here in germany. Made my PPL much later, in 2000, fixed wing, but boy, if I ever see the Mimi with a price tag on here belly I would make my helicopter license and buy some gallons of new (old) paint....

I lived near a junkyard in Panorama City, CA that this helicopter was left at. when the show went off the air, it was junked. climbed in it numerous times.

Summit was given a shock when I inspected it for a minor fuel leak. Opened up the panels off the floor and found all the fuel bladders missing their rubber coatings totally bare nylon , Not only leaking but any water would get into the cells and mess up the fuel... Whitman Airport weird place if you ever find it.

You need to make a correction in your info. Sikorsky helicopters originally used radial piston engines, not rotary engines, they aren’t the same thing. Radial piston engines have the cylinders arranged all around the output shaft, and was the main type of engine used in most aircraft for several decades. Rotary engines use a different type of internal combustion system that does not have a linear motion piston.

Saw a Bell 205 (Huey) being used for cropdusting here in central Illinois yesterday. Makes me wonder of it's history. The S-76 that Kobe Bryant died in, I saw 2 Illinois scumbag state workers get out of while I was fishing, about 9 years ago.
