Many rivers would not flood if they dredged them regularly , ours in Wairoa is disgusting n floods often because of silt build up

Westport is virtually at sea level. It's about 350 years since the last Alpine fault event that charged the Westcoast river systems with billions of tons of gravel , shaken down from the mountains. Therefore you must assume that these rivers are now approaching the lowest level of gravel in their beds that will be part of a 350year return cycle. There's very little use dredging the Buller river mouth apart from navigation requirements as the enormous flood volume will just fill the hole straight away. On top of this you have the dam at It's mouth called the Tasman sea. As sea levels rise, less water can flow and the only way around this is building flood protection walls allowing the river water level to rise above the Tasman which is blocking the flow. The risk of these man made structures failing is ever present and New Orleans and many other examples demonstrate the catastrophic risk. This Doco shows the beast that the Buller is.

The Tasman sea is a part of the Pacific Ocean. It depends whether you’re talking about the general or specific, it’s like how NZ is a part of Oceania. Maybe saying Tasman sea would’ve been more relevant in this context however either ones correct.
