Interesting video about the story of Weymouth. I was born in 1965 and from the age of 2 to the age of around 10/11 my late parents used to take me to Weymouth every June. They could not drive then so we travelled by train from Birmingham New St and changed at Bristol (cannot remember which station). We always stayed at the Electra Hotel on the Esplanade which was then opposite W H Smith. The Electra Hotel was ideal and we enjoyed our stay there every year. Only in the last few years when i watched a film called the Damned released in 1961 i thought that looks like Weymouth and blow me it was and i then saw Oliver Reed standing outside The Electra Hotel We visited the Pavilion Theatre as i grew a little older. I was always taken for something to eat and drink at a restaurant called FORTE'S. It was on 2 levels and the decor was typical 1930's if i remember correctly. This was one of the first coffee bars that Lord Charles Forte opened up in the UK when the family came over from Italy just before the First World War. I have quite a few photographs from my time in Weymouth I went back to Weymouth in August 2019 as my mother had died 6 weeks before and i must say nothing has really changed. I just love Weymouth

No surprise that various councils have been so short sighted. From leading the way with a modern harbour and Pavilion to almost losing everything. I have sent tens of thousands of holidaymakers to Weymouth and the Channel Islands, but whilst it remains one of the best resorts in the UK, the near loss of its theatre and losing Condor is unforgivable. What will they do next? - sell the sand from the beaches?

What a superb history. I was only yesterday looking at some prints of the early Esplanade, prior to the pier construction, and then after the first pier, which were featured early in the video.

Thanks for this history of Weymouth. I was a volunteer at the Nothe Fort Museum & did a week working at the Pavilion doing the curtain & back stage for VE 50th anniversary show. Saw a few shows there & had many interesting times.
