@@davisbowe8668 yeah I swear I heard that too. It probably originated as people just assuming things, since Wario looks so similar to Mario and Luigi, I mean why wouldn't he be their brother?
I love how wario has like more friends than mario that aren’t just toads. like each had their own personality and design showing that he is actually kind of a good person under all of that mario hating
Yea i dont think Wario is a good person…I just think his friends recognize how fun he is and how good his micro-games are. Wario would sell his own brother for a single red coin.
So Wario hates Mario, because at one point they were childhood friends and rivals, Wario growing jealous of Mario's fame. Funny part is, Waluigi doesn't have any beef with the Mario brothers, he just tags along with Wario. So Waluigi is just that kid who hangs out with the bully that picks on you and your sibling, but personally has nothing against you and even apologizes in private.
Waluigi actually DOES have beef against the Mario Bros. That's his whole gimmick. The difference is that it's completely unfounded. He didn't know the bros at all until he randomly showed up one day and introduced himself. Wario took him on as a sports partner, and the rest is history. Waluigi dedicates all of his time training to be better than the Mario Bros.
I think my favorite Wario fact is the following. One is his body, more specifically, the little anatomy sheet shown on Wario. Despite his massive gut, Wario is pure muscle. Meaning, Wario has a pretty perfect body for weight lifting, which in Wario World he puts that lifting to good use.
wario really went from this spiteful frenemy of mario to a passionate indie game dev with his own company in real life california (warioware get it together uses a real location from california in its opening) and honestly good for him
He's absolutely NOT a passionate indie game dev, he's just trying to make as much money as fast as possible. I'm sure he'd put lootboxes in his game if he knew about their existence.
16:06 Flipping the audience off Edit: In my head, I assume after the events of Warioland 4, Wario mellowed out from treasure hunting and decided to go clean (Well, more clean) after saving Princess Shokora. Which lead to him creating Warioware. Also, some fans theorized that Mona from Warioware is a descendant of Princess Shokora, which is why despite his personality, she feels like Wario is still good deep down.
I always wanted there to be a twist to the whole Mario/Wario backstory. Have it that during the events of yoshi’s island that Mario and Wario were switched accidentally by the stork. That Wario was meant to be a hero and have the heroes journey but because of a dumb stork he was given a family and life that lead this great hope into a life of villainy and upon finding Mario had lived a life rightfully his that lead to a never ending hunger for revenge. That would have been perfect motivation for him to take over Mario land.
I don’t know if it’s true but I have heard that Mario Land 2 actually retconned Tatanga to have been hired by Wario to kidnap Daisy to use that as a distraction to steal the 6 golden coins. Edit: I looked it up and this isn’t canon. I like the idea anyway.
@@hazukichanx408 is levels of Fawful consistent story telling (and yes story consistency continuity in Mario is ranked by their villains, and Fawful is just at the top with 5 games under he’s belt counting the side modes of the remakes has their own games)
0:49 is what gave me my fear of the dark; seeing this commercial 45min before bedtime at the age of 4 game me bad vibes and before bed i told my grandma i see that yucky man swirling above my head, so she got a lamp that glowed turquoise and i felt better. My fear of the dark lasted until i turned 10
@@TheMentok OH MAI GOD WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA-*CRASH*
My Niece used to make me play this game so she could watch all the goofy games and cutscenes, but she was still too young to do well at them. She eventually was able to beat the games by herself, but it was a fun way to bond.
The idea of Wario being German was always cool, but I think it was the best choice to make him Italian in the long run. Wario was born in the Mushroom Kingdom, just like the Mario Bros. It's entirely possible that Wario even lived in the same village that Mario did when Mario was a kid. So having all of the humans from that area have Italian accents just makes sense. I like to headcanon that Wario moved to New Donk City around the same time Mario's family did. And then at some point Wario met Jimmy T. At another point, Wario moved back to the Mushroom Kingdom. He got back in touch with Mario eventually, tried to steal his castle, and then the Wario Land games happened. Wario's Castle was destroyed at the end of Wario's Woods (SNES), and he used his remaining money to move to Diamond City, where he made all his new friends. Wario Land 4, Master of Disguise, and Wario Land: Shake It occur after he has already moved to Diamond City.
Wario Land: Shake It! is one of my favorite games growing up. It gave a relative latecomer like me to the Wario Party a distilled essence of what Wario is all about: An absolute unit scouring the land for treasure, giving zero F's about anything else, doing so in a way that's somehow simultaneously both wacky and badass. To say nothing about that game's amazing art style and soundtrack. Makes it all the more tragic there hasn't been a new Wario Land in Years.
With the Wario solo games being so odd, I always preferred the interpretation that "Wario Land" or "Wario World" was a parallel reality to the Mushroom Kingdom where everyone's morals were subverted. Bad guys were good, good guys were bad and all that. It makes for a fun way of imagining other Wario-esque incarnations of the cast and makes enough sense given how the Warp Pipes seem capable of taking you anywhere in the multiverse.
A 20+ minute video on the backstory of a relationship between video game characters. This kind of stuff is why I love RU-vid. No where else can you get content like this taken seriously. It's great to listen to while I work or clean.
I first came to love Wario because of Mario Kart 64. In the multi-player modes when you won he had his great line "I'ma Wario, I'ma gonna win!", but when you lost he was so upset he would be biting his hat 😂
I played 6 golden coins a ton as a kid. I also only played it on the og gameboy, so seeing these games without the blurred movements are uncanny to me.
You know, I usually dislike videos that cut the flow of the narration just to put a gag or meme in the middle, but you do it in such away that it's actually funny. Great channel
My dad bought a Gameboy and the first wario game to play while I was being born and my couples months stay in the hospital after that (had issues after I was born), and helped keep him sane during those rough times. It was also the first video game my little brother and I played and we both loved it. So wario holds a really special place in my heart. Awesome video man, really well done and I appreciate it!
There is one thing I can bring up: Back in 2002, Burger King had these kids meal promotions of the Super Mario All-stars toys. Every toy came with like an activity book that had some trivia on it like what's Mario's last name and one of them was the question: Why does Wario hate Mario so much. I still remember the answer because according to the paper, Mario is a better plumber than Wario.
16:44 funny thing about Charles is that he also at onepoint voiced donkey Kong and I think Bowser 64 I don’t know which line it was, but it was the line that was tone down that fitted the character and so that bowser wouldn’t sound like Mario I also think Charles is going to voice Wario in the Mario movie, since that’s the only character he’s fully voice acted before in other games and I think that would make one hell of a cameo appearance
4:18 In Super Smash Bros Brawl in the subspace emissary, Wario captures Ness, this could be a reference to Pinocchio by both Wario and Stromboli kidnapping boys
Mario Land 2 is one of my favorite Mario games. Really interesting locations and baddies and Wario made for a fun final boss. Especially with him using the same power-ups Mario used all game. I kinda wish they'd try something like this again but include Waluigi as well. I also thought Wario was saying "Oh, I missed" this whole time.
I remember getting WarioWare for DS, and playing it for hours, I thoroughly loved it. The characters had a lot of charm, the art and even the sound design was pretty cool.
the funniest Wario fact for me, is just the fact that the only thing that people remembers from Wario World is the pause music screen, like, serious, try to find one single person that talks about the gameplay or even story, people will only ever talk about this game when it's about the pause menu music.
Not that hard to find on RU-vid so I think this is hyperbole. This video isn't a deep dive into Wario World but I'm open to more focused videos on Wario if there's interest
4:24 lol that's from the Wario World game manual. I remember it even has a little Wario annotation next to it saying something to the effect of "who's the idiot who said I weigh 308lbs?! I just like to layer my clothes" 💀
What a thorough dive! Certainly learned things I didn’t even know I didn’t know! Would love to hear your coverage of Wario Land 2, 3, and 4. 3 was a special kind of wild.
I found it to be quite peculiar how, for a character who desperately Hates Mario, Wario has no problem joining the rosters of Mario Party, Kart, or any other spin-off. It makes me think that despite all he's been through, this greedy Doppelganger has a soft spot for The Mushroom Kingdom gang, even if he doesn't act friendly. And yes, I know Bowser also joins Mario in these events despite being a Villain, but I found Wario's inclusion to be more interesting since he and Waluigi are paired up with the heroes in Super Mario Party, while Bowser and his troops have their own half of the roster.
As a fan of wario from the start(wario is the earliest I can remember being so immersed in a character role while gaming, I was the greediest little shit when I played wario games) I really don't like how sakurai has essentially reduced wario to and popularised him as a fart joke. Now wario being a bit gross was always a part of his character cause he was, you know, a bad guy a bad Mario so yeah he was a bit uglier, nastier, smellier, meaner he was obviously a not good dude. But he was also powerful and a "gets shit done" kinda guy who would get foiled by karma because we all should good and not bad like wario ok kids how do you look at that and come up with rocket power farts? And on top of that exclude the one move that the guy is actually know for being the shoulder charge? Sakurai is talented guy no doubt but on certain matters I believe he's full of shit himself.
WarioWare was a mistake. That's where Wario's characterization was overhauled, down to his design and personality traits, and naturally Sakurai used that version of him because it's the one that was the most relevant one at the time. The real tragedy is that Wario didn't make his Smash debut in Melee despite gaining an abundance of fan votes, if he did the Wario Land version of him would be still the most relevant one and it would have cemented him as a character, relegating the WW version to a potential alt costume in later installments instead of making it his primary one.
@Sho I love warioware but i do acknowledge there was some change that happened around warioware as that's when things get abstract weird with more slap stick and potty humour but that was more reflective of the micro games than the characters(ignoring crygor drinking intestine blasting chemicals the lunatic) Wario was still the greedy piece of shit I love him to be throughout. Dude came at us selling 5 second games that were probably made in 5 minutes about shit like picking your nose and the whole world bought it in droves while he wahahahas all the way to the bank, you fools you got scammed the joke is on all of us, can you expect less of the bad Mario? Even to the end Wario is fully prepared to skip town and not pay his "friends" for the 1 hour game jam that was warioware's creation and of course karma gets him so don't be a bad man like wario kids. So while he wasn't treasure hunting and man handling whimps like a boss warioware never betrayed the character of wario as he was a greedy piece o shit from start to finish, the micro games might have some potty humor in them but we're the suckers that bought them and make wario rich.
Super Mario Land 2 and Wario Land are still two of my favorite platformers. They both have so damn much charm. Wario really had a strong start, the lucky bastard. I still need to play the DX version of Six Golden Coins!
Gosh that backround on 9:46 brings me back in my first days of school. Instead of doing my work I was always mesmerized by the two computers with this image moving and going upside down. Til this day I've always wondered about it @-@
I WAS SEARCHING FOR 10 YEARS FOR THE "SO EIN MIST" THING I heard it on a Dunkey Lee Sin video like 10 years ago and I thought it was the funniest soundbite ever but I could never track down where it was from until this video, I'm a grown man now and I finally have closure. I genuinely can't believe it. I always thought it said "Oh I missed!", fantastic stuff.
3:52 dude I laughed SO.FUCKING.HARD my roommate yelled at me through the wall lmao, (I’m sorry btw bro if you see this video which I’m sending you so that you can understand 😂).
For some reason I was sure Wario Land was a prequel to Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins, with Mario stealing the castle Wario gets in Wario Land, I'm so glad this wasn't the case, I really hate the idea of Mario being evil, he can be mischievous but not evil imo. Great video, reminded me of WarioWare once again, I have no idea how I found out about that series for the first time but now it's one of my favorite franchises ever, I found it when I was already grown up too so no childhood nostalgia making me love it.
Dude I’ve been binging your entire channel ever since I found it. Amazing stuff!💖💖💖👏👏 also Wario World is MY FREAKING CHILDHOOD and the music, sound design, and overall look of the game is my favorite wario thing ever made.
Great video man! I didn't know much about Wario besides him being super cheap in smash brothers with his motorcycle attacks lol. I always assumed that he was an evil brother of Mario when I was a kid too. I'd definitely love to see him in the main Mario story more as well, keep up the fantastic work
This video is a gem, I love these types of deep dives on characters and wario just happens to be my favorite Mario character. Thank you for caring about his Wental Health 🗿👌 Edit: my favorite thing about wario is the sheer amount of weird shit about him available in Canon sources. It is Canon that: -wario himself doesn't know how old he is because his mom never threw him a birthday party -his mom is the reason for his money complex. When he left home he stuffed her in a cabinet -he either used to, or currently, farms. He has a tractor and pet chicken named Hen Also something interesting to think about. If wario and Mario are opposite, we can learn some interesting things. Wario is selfish and hoards treasure. Mario is selfless and spends his money. But, while Wario's money goes to buying himself assets to use for his company (he tries to steal the money for himself but eventually ends up paying his employees anyway) Mario spends the money on...himself. not once do we see Mario use his money for anything other than advancing his own goals. Another thing is Mario treats Luigi kind of like shit and Luigi is obviously upset by this, but Wario and Waluigi have more of a traditional brotherly relationship where they fight each other but also care for each other. Wario is actively self-conscious and, while he has narcissistic tendencies, kind of sells himself out with jokes and stuff indicating his inner insecurity and deeper thoughts. Mario never has that kind of appeal. We never know his intentions. We never know what Mario is thinking or planning. He just. Does. He acts and reacts. Wario "practices being evil" and tries really hard to be a super bad dude I promise he's so evil and cunning, but Mario never tries to cover up. Anything. It's really odd.
I loved playing Wario land 4 and saving Princess Shokora, such a cute story line. And yep just like you, I felt cooler bc it was the villain essentially being a hero lol
A game that gives you different endings based on how rich you are, incentivising the player to be greedy and collect all the coins they can, is so on-brand for a Wario game.
I have to wonder why the Wario Land series just kinda...stopped. If I recall correctly, the last game in the series was all the way back in 2008, as I said when talking about Captain Syrup. Sure, Wario has definitely found his footing as a game developer all these years later, but the games do show that he still goes on adventures every now and then. Just look at Smooth Moves, where the story begins with him trying to find a Wii Remote in a temple and run from a giant boulder, Indiana Jones style. Or look at Warioware Gold, where he finds the olden, golden toilet, the same one he tries to auction for money as part of his tournament, AND puts on to power up with during the finale. He's got a more modest job, but he's definitely still a lot more of a villain protagonist and an adventurer. So, why don't we get a new Wario Land game? Oh, and also, I have never heard of Welcome to Greedville before. I guess Wario either moved out of Greedville after all of his adventures, when he settled into Diamond City?
I don't just still use a screensaver, I still use the 3D Maze screensaver you showed in the video! It's just for looks, since screensavers have been obsolete ever since the phaseout of CRTs, but I still have such fond memories of it from the Windows 9x days I can't part with it.
Wtf that phrase from Wario was freaking German that whole time ._. Well shit that's nuts but it finally gave me some closure cuz I was in the "oh I missed" boat to I never knew why it sounded so off to me but it did xD but yeah this was a pretty great video I had no idea Wario had so much lore packed in the older games I never noticed
I really think Captain Syrup is underutilized. Like with her pirate/mad scientist/rival gimmick, I feel she could be put in a lot of roles and have it still fit (I know it's Wario so anything goes, but I hope I got my point across)
The fact the guy who created Wario also designed Samus, btw Foreman Spike was the first draft to have Brutus in Mario's universe. And it seems R&D really digged Martinet's voice and sampled his voicelines from Mario Golf 64 into Wario Land 4
I want to see Wario incorporate Waluigi in his two series. Wario and Waluigi work so well as a pair in the Mario spin-off games, it'd only make sense to put Waluigi in WarioWare or revive the Wario Land series with Waluigi in the helm.
