The STRANGE CASE of George and Willie Muse

At the turn of the 20th century, the traveling circus was probably the most exciting and popular form of public entertainment. The magnetic attraction of the big top was so strong that it gave rise to the expression “running away with the circus.” However, in the case of two albino African American brothers at that time, the circus ran away with them.

Good for Momma Muse protecting her sons. When I was a child I thought circuses were so neat, but now that I am an adult I realize how horrible they are on many levels.

As a kid I was fascinated by them, but inside something didn't sit right with me, and kind of sadness I couldn't explain would fill me when I was at a circus. I think it's the empathic sensitive part of my soul, I'm especially sensitive to all things animal related, even in fictional stories. I'm in my 40s now, and I still have difficulties watching scenes in FICTIONAL films where devastating circumstances occur to animal. Or if I'm reading a bin, & an animal character within it's pages are hurt or killed. I mean I will UGLY CRY, like deep gasps for air, huge streams of tears pouring down my face, snotting, crying! And sometimes, I'll be so disturbed-- depending on the story, by it for days, sometimes even longer. I think some of my life circumstances made me more sensitive at a young age, especially having a severely disabled baby brother born when I was 3. I was always very protective of the handicapped, elderly, babies children & , and of course animals. Anyone who was vulnerable. I'm glad for the most part the only circuses still around, are completely by voluntary participation of the performers. I'm okay with todays "freak show circuses" that people with unique abilities, excessive body modifications, sword/fire/jugglers/ contortionists/ trapeeze/tightrope/motorcycle stunt drivers/suspension (piercings) performers/ etc. I use to unicycle and learn all kinds of performance circus type things like contact juggling. I joked that joining the circus was my fall back plan if i couldn't find work looking as I do. Trigger warning if your grossed out about extreme piercings: I actually participated in an energy pull at a suspension performance/party put on at a friend's house that was a tattoo artist/piercer. I had 2 8 gauge hooks pierced between my shoulder blades and was hooked up to chords and a metal circle connected to 3 other women with the same exact piercings done too. We pulled against one another. Standing like Michael Jackson in Smooth Criminal video but held by piercings in the back. Lol. I know it sounds insane, and I never Imagined I would try it. But after watching suspensions of people hanging from hooks and swinging from the ceiling I was filled with adrenaline from it. You had to be sober to participate, and it wasn't really painful, there was also no blood. I got a spiritual buzz off of it for about 3 days. Sorry for the tangent. I just felt like sharing.

If their were no zoo's, nearly all people would not get the experience of seeing such beautiful animals. Not everyone has the ability or means to travel the globe to see such creatures. I can't imagine the emotion of them, and their mother seeing each other after all those years. The relief of realizing that your loved ones are still alive. I grew up during the Civil Rights era, and I have never understood how anyone could treat another person so vile. I know all the excuses and self justification that has been spouted. But these promoters wouldn’t have been able to treat animals so terribly. Some humans aren’t human.

What a beautiful ending story despite going through adversity they won through in the end very similar to that about the Elephant Man who had hydrocephalus an enlarging of the head caused by fluid but back then no one knew the real medical terms for his disfigurement and he too was exploited in a similar way.Sadly somewhere in the world today someone somewhere will still be getting exploited in a similar way let these stories be a shining light of hope that someday human beings can stop being cruel to one another and all this cruelty will remain in the past and never be a part of our future if we as human beings have a future that is... which I sometimes think we don't....

@@thetimetraveller6550 You're very welcome. I would so much like to see the end of people exploiting one another in such cruel manners. We reap what we sow. I want to be that one person that was kind, the one that smiles and makes someone feel more accepted and welcomed. I've always felt that way, even as a child. It's always a good day when I come across someone who I feel is a kindred spirit.

My best friend has partial albinism. It's a recessive gene in her family that no one has had in generations. Both of her parents were on the darker shade of black, but she has golden hair, hazel eyes and honey colored skin. I met her in 94 and even in California, in a town she was related to 1/3 of she was discriminated against by other black people as well as ignorant kids. Sadly even now Albino Africans are still hunted down because it's believed their body parts are magical and used for potions and such. And even in "educated" countries they're still abused horribly.

It's interesting thinking about freak shows from a modern perspective. I'm happy they're obsolete not only for the "exhibits" case, but also that we're not susceptible to watching them out of curiosity.

Slavery, discrimination, and exploitation have always been a part of humanity. To ignore history and only think of more recent and publicized events is to ignore that we have always sucked and it's going to take a lot more to change behavior. And by more recent I mean at least the 1700s.

I knew a boy who was an albino in the 1970s. His parents were black, and he was white with white hair. But he did have large patches of black skin too. People were cruel even then, as our parents and neighbours told us to stay away from him incase we caught some kind of skin condition. We just ignored them.
