The Strange Demographics of Suriname

This video is about the weird (but in a good way) demographics of Suriname. Suriname’s demographics sound like a Geography now April Fools joke episode. Though located in South America, a region that is predominantly Spanish and Portuguese speaking and practices Catholicism. Suriname’s official language is Dutch, their largest single ethnic group is east Indian, and 14% of the country practice Islam.

This is a utterly false representation of Suriname . Wrong as it is; the Afro Surinamese are the greatest group of inhabitants of Suriname. This presentation of 38% number is WRONG by easily mis-designation of Afro Surinamese and dividing, miscalling and noted in different fixed mixed ethnic groups As simply and STUPID like that, some unaware Afro head of the census bureau named; "Iwan Sno", (an Afro Surinamese himself) pulled that sick, nation dividing joke off. Now it seems to be worldwide authenticated and mistaken for truth. Suriname is a CURSED nation . It's future will show .

@@gielman916 Cursed? Ha....then explain to me why Suriname doesn't know about nature's catastrophes. No storms, no drought, no floodings or any other nature's catastrophe. You name it. Explain to me why the people of Suriname, no matter the race, live in peace with each other. Explain to me how Suriname is SO BLESSED to be the greenest country in the whole world. For 93% of Suriname is forest. So what if our economy isn't that what it should be. But, again, we are BLESSED that are not at the poverty line and the homeless you can count on your 10 fingers. I don't know who or what you are,but before speaking ill or bad about Suriname, I recommend you to do the RIGHT research. And if that isn't enough, why don't you just visit the beautiful and BLESSED Suriname, at least once.

Solid video! Just a small comment on your pronunciation, Dutch is basically said like "dodge", but without drawing out the vowel as much. You make it sound more like Deutsch, which is the German word for "German". Not the same.

@ 04:31 ---> SURINAMESE TOLORANCE: Two beautiful buildings next to each other adorn the Keizerstraat in Paramaribo. One is a mosque of the Ahmadiya movement, the other is a synagogue. The distance between the two buildings is no greater than sixty meters. A wall of only one and a half meters high forms the boundary. From the first floor, the Muslims pray with their heads towards the synagogue. There are no security measures at the entrance to the Jewish place of worship. One cannot recall an incident with the Jewish neighbours. Probably nowhere in the world are a mosque and a synagogue so right next to each other and the mutual relationships are so positive.

This country is my native birth land!! Such an sweet country to live, nice weather, deliciouse fruit and food ..all cultures (from India, Java/ Indonesië, China, Africa, and the mixed culture the Creolen , the real natives, the Indians with red skin, and the Dutch people people...all live together as one nation!!! No jelousy or nasty Neighbours...but all changed ..when one person became President (after Surinam was Ondependant from Holland). His name Desi Bouterse, changed the whole LIFE of a lot of Surinam people....hè killed some very highstandard Surinam people, very intelligent people...His milletaries took those people from their homes or at their work...and let them all executed without an trial!!! Murder by first degree...So a lot of intelligent high standard people were affraid that the same execution would happend to them...so they fled to the Motherland Holland, or to the USA, Canada, Australië...or to the Antillen..Aruba, French Guyana and Brasil! This president changed the life of so many many many Surinam people...i hope hè looked himself in the mirror and relalized what an MONSTER HE WAS!! Judgementsdau is waiting for him!!!! He live sn LIFE as an king ...but the day when hè closed his eyes for ever...his Master is waiting for him....and no one is going to hear him...no one...only his Master!!!By doing evil...means ..he sold his soul to the master of Evil!!! And what is from the Master of Evil hè never let go.....what is from God...God never let go.. So rewards and judgement comes Upstairs in the Universum!!!!!!

Its most important to let the world know that Native people are the original inhabitants of this country. First they try to take and use these people for slaves. The map in these video and all map you see in video or geography are wrong maps of the country of Suriname. The surface of the country Suriname is larger. Surinam food is a melting pot of African Hindustani, indonesia and Chinese, which is seen as the most popular food in the Netherlands. I grew up with my best friend, a Javanese Surinamese guy since we were about 11 or so, when we were 21, we visited his family there and all I can say is I never wanted to leave. I came there battling depression and I cam back reborn, its rich with history and lots and lots of kind people. Every country has it's downsides ofcourse, so it's definitely not paradise, but its very close

Thank you for your very nice work on geography overall, your interest in our country and for mentioning curiosities such as our national language Sranan Tongo. We find ourselves, as Surinamese South Americans, located on a strategic platform which connects Europe and the Americas. Please note your depiction of Suriname on 0.10 seconds shows wrong contours. The correct map can be found contacting our official Planning department, Gonini website, or agricultural research institute CELOS. It is very unfortunate that lots of wrong versions of our map are floating around on the internet until today.

I beg to talk, different about slavery ? It was with hard Afro labor (slavery) on which Suriname was started in 1615, and for 90% build and founded on. With 250 years Afro labor(slavery) build and founded Suriname; really out of the virgin tropical jungle and swamp. The blueprint was created by the colonial Dutch administration. 400,000 Afro forefathers were lost, in a timespan, when the world population was

Some addition. 1 july 1863 was the 'offiial' date of abolishment of slavery in Surinam. In reality former slaves were forced to keep on working on plantations for a period of 10 years, be it on a conrract. These 10 years are called 'Periode van Staatstoezicht'. More and more Surinamese living in the Netherlands are considering 1 july 1873 as the real year of actual abolisment of slavery. Also the lives of the migrants on a contract from Asia were difficult, as it was quite common for plantation owners to not stick to their part of the workingcontracts. Creole AfroSurinamese are mixed with not only Indiginous and European, but also with Asians (Chinese, Javanese, Hindostani), Portugese Jewish (Sefardim), German Jewish (Ashkenazi), Maroons, Boeroes . The same is more and more the reality nowadays for other, not AfroSurinamese groups.

Actually it was 5 years. I still have the contract.
@realmofthesenses
@realmofthesenses 2 года назад
@@D-Lusion It must be wonderful to still have a contract of those times. I know the contracts of Asian migrant workers were 5 years. They could be extended with another 5 years. However, the contractperiod for emancipated AfroSurinamese, called Periode van Staatstoezicht, was from 1863 till 1873. I have no knowledge of the exact content or duration of individual contracts with former enslaved AfroSurinamese.

Conditions is the Netherlands were tough to after the Napolitaanse wars the country was bankrupt . Severe poverty for the great majority of the inhabitants of the Netherlands . About 30 % lived like uneducated wanderer. Sever punishment for discipline common at school . military , and for the crew in front of the masts . Catholisme restorde in 1853 , before forbidden to practice in open . Childlabour until 1900. etc etc etc . After 1873 many plantations were owned by the families of the former slaves.
@realmofthesenses
@realmofthesenses 2 года назад
@@barta9342 Many? Do you have numbers or % percentages. I know some plantations were bought by former enslaved workers, e. g. a well known example is Plantation Roorak, it is still owned by a couple of families, all descendents of these emancipated slaves. Other plantations were simply left, and today no one knows who legally is the owner.

@@realmofthesenses It's a misunderstanding thinking al non-whites were slaves . Many were before abolishing slavery free man .In the case of women i remember miss Samson the biggest slave owner in the 17 hundreds.The inhabitants of Paramaribo were mostly free colored people in the 17 and 18 hundreds .(manu Missie etc. ) The Marron 's also before abolishing slavery ,free man . "Europeans" or Whites and Jews were a minority. The percentages will hard to be find because for example the numbers of Marrons will be difficult to estimate . You have and you probly know the same "Bere" meaning the same mother from a former plantage of which many owned by these families . The last names can refer to those plantages or slave owners. The percentages you are asking , for this research is necessary but also difficult because there was no basic administration and properties could also changed from hand without administration . You can find answers studying "testaments" or "last wills" but a complete registration isn't available as far I know. It will be interesting studying the period after abolishing slavery and the story of free colored people in Suriname . Say from 1863 to 1940 . In 1928 everyone became Dutch ,before this time for example the "hindustanen " were British. etc.

There’s nothing ‘weird’ about the demographics of Suriname. This is just how things happened during colonial times. In some parts of the world people may see this as ‘weird’ if you are not used to see these kind of demographics in certain places. But for me, a Dutchie of Indian-Surinamese descent, it makes perfect sense. As for most people with with connections to / basic knowledge of Suriname. Good video btw 👍🏽

@@pritsingh9766 I am a Javanese myself, and I am also a Muslim but my first name is in Sanskrit and my last name is traditional Javanese old names. Actually many of us still uses a traditional Javanese name (Yanto, Yono, Susilo, Agus, Susi, Ayu, etc) or Sanskrit/Hindu name (Surya, Adi, Abimana, Arjuna, Sri, Larasati, Satria etc) Btw, fyi, that "Baghdadi" last name that you've mention is actually a "place indicator", which means the person who have that name was born in Baghdad City, Iraq. So, for someone who was born in Suriname to have "Baghdadi" as his last name is absurd.
