To me, the band Avatar seem to have this kind of.. Cursed edge but I THINK / HOPE things improved for them after the changed record label in 2016. Would be awesome if you can do a piece on this band.
Their early work was a little bit too “scene” for me, but when the Silver Scream came out. I think they really came into their own commercially and artistically. The whole album has a refined melodic sensibility. That really makes it a cut above the rest 😉👍
Same man. I remember listening to ice nine kills years ago. I remember liking a song or two but couldn't get too into them. Then I found the silver scream on RU-vid and that changed everything.
@@metalvox89 lol this is an excerpt from their song "Hip to be Scared" off their new album. Though it does kinda sum them up really nicely, which is why he said it on the song I'm sure.
I interviewed Spencer a few years ago, shortly after The Silver Scream came out. My overall impression of him was that he's a genius, highly intelligent, and has a vision that he's got planned out far into the future. It's one of my favorites interviews so far
@@gnd111could argue genius lends to more of a prodigy, inherent gift and highly intelligent is the mature application of wisdom in insightful ways - no I don’t think he used two words/phrases to say the same thing , 10 mo late , but never too late to call someone on being an ass
Their song "Communion of the Cursed" completely hooked me around a year before TSS dropped. I thought I discovered one of the best underground acts to follow and their success made me so happy. TSS2 shows that they aren't just lucky but legitimately talented musicians.
Same here, i caught the hype for Every Trick and saw them close Warped Tour in Detroit. They were every bit as great then as they are now. They've just refined the sound.
that album was a good startup, but after that album they fot a new guitarist, who was 10x better than there old, there last 2 albums have been incredible
Ice Nine Kills started out in 2000 as a ska punk band? The literal worst year for ska punk bands? Sheesh, that's like debuting as an American disco artist in 1980.
I have been OBSESSED with Welcome to Horrorwood since it dropped. Every single song slayed me. The perfection of the song lineup, the movies they correlate with, the sound bites.. everything. Pure perfection. I think having the storyline at the end of the videos is genius and I wish I would’ve found them sooner, to be honest. I will listen to this album everyday until my ears bleed. 🖤🖤
I discovered them on Punk Goes Pop, and shortly thereafter heard 'Me, Myself and Hyde,' which got me hooked. I'll never get over how filthy those breakdowns are.
@@nymets1104 I've actually never heard their Adele cover. maybe that's the song the original commenter was talking about. idk tho bc INK have been on a few diff PGP volumes. I was introduced to them on Punk Goes Pop Vol 6 with their cover of Maroon 5's "Animals"
As someone who hustled at festivals alongside Spencer, that dude is a reason why key member clauses exist in contracts and is and was an unstoppable force. He deserves the success as I saw that drive and focus first hand!
I don’t think you talked enough about how well they have treated their fans over the years. I have never met such a grateful band. I’m not sure if they still do this with how big they are, but they used to do free Q&A live streams and interact directly with the fans, they also did weekly Merch give aways hand signed by the band members. I have a blind friend and we went to a show and they took the time to come talk to him and gave us free vip tickets to see them at the Florida warped tour. If you’re a new fan do yourself a favor and listen to their first album and ep last chance to make amends and the burning. That shit was my childhood.
Saw them in 2019 while they were touring for The Silver Scream and me and the friends i went with all jumped for the VIP package. They were an absolute blast to hang out with before the show. They sat and just talked with us for a good while, then all the VIPs played horror movie trivia against Spencer, which we managed to win. Was by far the best show i went to. Phinehas was one of the opening acts and those guys are really cool as well. Got to chat with Sean while he was running their merch table between sets and was talking to him about music for a good while
I'm not a fan of INK, but I'm now more interested than ever. You are doing an excellent job, Finn. These deep dives keep improving. He Is Legend is a grinder that needs to pop off already.
I would be beyond elated if Finn covered He is Legend. They have deserved a blow-up moment with literally every album. White Bat got some eyes on them but still nowhere near what they deserve.
Honestly I don't think their music is very good. Finn makes a good point in that it is really "meh". But they definitely found their stride with the horror style and merch/ticket sales. They put on a hell Of a show and having met and spoken to Dan and Ricky from The band, their pretty great ppl all around.
@@edima Ok i understand if u dont like it personally, but saying their music isnt "very good" is kinda bullshit. Outside of the Horror-Box theyre still one of the best and highest quality metalcorebands of this era (Atleast the last 3 Albums)
@@demian2616 thinking about it now your right man, that was ignorant of me to say, and I'm sorry. But you are right, I personally don't enjoy their music, even though I immensely enjoy them as people and as entertainers.
As someone who played many shows with INK in the local Boston days, and the 2010's warped tour days, I can attest that Spencer is a MACHINE. Super driven to succeed. Its really cool to see things working out so well for him and the rest of the band.
I've liked the band since The Predator Becomes The Prey, I'm glad they finally get the recognition they deserve! I'm glad they didn't give up (even if they have a longer past members list lol)
I didn't know them until _"Every Trick In The Book",_ (my favorite album of theirs) but I've been into them ever since. Such a great band, FINALLY blowing up.
I found them around the tail end of The Predator Becomes the Prey. Always thought they were criminally underrated. So happy to see them get the recognition they deserve.
Absolutely insane that they got Sam Kubrick from Shields(UK) to feature on Enjoy Your Slay, considering he is Stanley Kubrick's grandson. Such an insane crossover.
Ice Nine is a reference from Vonnegut's Cat's Cradle. They've always clearly been into literature so it's cool they really leaned into that eventually!
Im completely in love with the Silver Scream 2 album. What they figured out was making music about what they r passionate about and it worked. They really went all out and threw themselves into it. This album is a masterpiece.
Spencer came up to me during Warped Tour 08 and slapped headphones on my head, and the lead riff from The Greatest Story Ever Told came on. I told him I loved it, but only had $5 left. He gave me the CD and a T-shirt. I'll never forget that hustle, and I'm so happy they're finally getting the recognition they deserve! Sup Spencer!
Honestly its not even the Horror Gimmick that made me fall in love with the band. They sound super unique, have fast and fun instruments and vocals and their songs are all very memorable. That really makes it a cut above the rest
Saw them in high school on their tour for “The Predator Becomes the Prey” the band was still selling their own merch after their set, and they had these limited edition cutoff flannel vests that the band had hand sewed their logos on. One of the sickest pieces of merch I ever bought and I still own it to this day. Truly a testament of how hard they worked to get the much deserved success they now have. 🤘
Not a fan of Ice Nine Kills but my wife is so as her husband I try to at least learn about what she likes or get news on things she likes to share with her. This is probably one of the best videos Finn has done. I learned a little bit about one of my wifes favorite bands and thank you Finn. Thank you.
I was at warped tour in 2008 and was waiting on from first to last to perform and Ice Nine Kills walked up to me with a portable CD player and put the headphones on me to let me hear their album they had just put up and I bought a copy, they were hustling and I respect them for that, so happy to see them getting the attention they are getting
Ice nine kills was giving out their first ep at warped tour when I was 16 in like 2006 or 7 they handed me and all my friends a copy and ironically it was actually really good.
I think that's prettty common in the metal fandom; sticking with a band you like even if they're not popular. I could be wrong because I'm not that much into the metal community as a whole; but that's what has happend to me at least.
I found INK just before Every Trick in the Book dropped. From the moment I hear Me, Myself and Hyde I was hooked. They're the band that actually got me into Metalcore as much as I am now. Made it my number 1 genre. I loved that whole album. Every minute of it. Then when they started releasing singles/videos for Silver Scream, my adoration just grew. I was super invested in their original narrative weaved into the videos. That's one of the biggest things that draws me to the band. They're super creative and have amazing attention to detail. Silver Scream 2 was every bit what I hoped it would be, too. I can't wait for what they do next. They put in that hard work and I think they didn't quit because they were doing it for the love of their craft, not the fame and money. Nobody slaves like that in what looks like a dead end for that long if they don't love it. They worked hard and it really payed off. It may have been a slow start, but I think it's safe to say that their recent success more than makes up for all of that time at the bottom. One of my favorite success stories. Thanks for the video
I teared up realizing how long they’ve struggled and how far they’ve come since 🥺 I found out about them in 2016 or 2017 because they were touring with Motionless in White and absolutely fell in love with Every Trick In the Book ♥️ I’m so proud of these boys
Ice Nine Kills are amazing. I discoverd them during the pandemic thanks to Jason's Mom. Now im completly obsessed and damn are they a fun band. Also this iterration with Spencer, Dan, Rickey, Joe and Patrick is the best one yet. I really wanna see them live as soon as I can. Ice Nine Kills, if you read this, please come to Sweden!
What pulled me into INK was their passion and maturity. As much as the songs from the last three albums are based on other things, they still manage to inject a genuineness that not a lot of other bands in the genre do
To be 100% honest, I think the fact that INK also has 'a cute front man that all the scene girls liked', is what carried them far enough to actually get to that breakthrough. Spencer is one of those guys that get better looking with age. The big difference between INK and many other bands is that they actually deserved the breakthrough because they are really damn good, and catchy too. But Spencer being cute definitely helped to get them this far. Most bands would have been forced to give up and get day jobs like you said.
Yeah, the problem is, back in his early and mis 20s. ..Oliver Sykes from Bmth was an absolute arsehole 😂 the band took off and he got very egotistical, as he couldn't handle the fame so soon.
I was one of those people buying the EP in Tinley Park. Wish I still had it. No joke have caught them live about 10 times now. Always a great live show.
I'm back here. I just saw them live, it was crazy. The public was every age, every gender, dancing, chanting, doing a pogo or a wall of death. It was just positive, violent and sweet. It was the best concert I went to yet 😊
Spencer’s vision is truly unmatched. The music, the music videos, the merch. It took the man almost two decades to realize his branding genius, but I’m here for it all the way.
When I was a kid, The Greatest Story Ever Told was one of my favorite songs. When I heard Communion of the Curse I was surprised they were still a band. Today I love the last 3 albums they’ve dropped. Not just a single song
Dude, thanks for making this. I've been a fan of them for a long time, and I've kinda been watching this story unfold in real time, so it's nice to see it documented so well lol.
I remember when I first got into Ice Nine Kills, Spencer sold me their Safe Is Just A Show album at Warped Tour in like... 2010? I've seen them live a bunch of times too, in crappy little venues whenever they played in NYC.
I’ve just recently been listening to these guys a lot. They were just one band that I skipped for some reason. Now they are becoming one of my favorite bands.
Just started listening to these guys last week when the new album came out and I've now listened to the 2 horror albums start to finish about 8 times a piece. Happy you did this video.
You should do a video like this on Gojira. Absolutely amazing band going from the French underground death metal scene to being nominated for a Grammy and breaking the top 15 on billboard
Dude I saw them at knot fest in 2019… it was sick that slipknot brought them on that tour and they absolutely blew my mind live. Been a huge fan since.
I’ve only very recently (two days ago after seeing them open for Metallica) gotten into Ice Nine, but from what I have obsessively gathered is that these guys have *hustled.* They have knelt, and scraped, and worked until they bled. Really pulled themselves up by their combat bootstraps. Incredible band that I have nothing but respect for.
Great band with even GREATER people in it. From Spencer to Nadia to Manager Mike Mowery to their Attorney Eric German, every single person with INK are amazing. They deserve all of the success they have worked their ass off to get.
Ice Nine Kills has had a semi large following here in Rochester NY. So I've always heard lots about them and always have had friends that are big fans. Several of them even have the IX logo tattooed on them. It's cool to see them blow up
I was high one time with my friends and "Rocking The Boat" came on, I was hooked on it. When I got home I started listening to all of their albums. I am very glad my friend played that song which would start my heavy metal/metal core journey.
I actually hadn't heard of INK until I heard their Michael Myers song. Which is one of my absolute favorite songs, and they did him justice. Halloween/MM is my favorite horror movie/villain. Made me look into their music even more. Good on him.
I just found them for the first time a couple days ago. So they're still bringing in new audiences. I was really impressed with their pyro and stage theatrics when my friend and I went to the silver scream con!!!
Clearly they found their element it doesn't even have to be about the Horror Genre. They found their angle to bring out not only the music but also what these horror movies mean to people. They know these movies and everything about the movie/books and characters mean so much to people. They respect the love and attention that people pay attention too. And being someone who grew up on horror movies since I was 4, I gotta give huge respect to them. Hope to see you guys next year.
First song I heard from them was "The fastest way to a girl's heart is through her ribcage" or whatever that one song with a really long name is called, and I was hella hyped when Every Trick In The Book came out. Bloodbath & Beyond and Communion of the Cursed are two of my favorite songs from them, and I'm hella happy they found success with their two newest albums
What an excellent video! I came across their video Stabbing in The Dark a couple years back, watched it and fell in love. Immediately hooked me and I spent that entire night watching all their kickass vids.
I met these guys during an As I Lay Dying/TDWP concert back in 2007/2008. They weren't even in the line-up, just a small band selling their new album for 5 bucks. Awesome to hear they're still making music today.
I only really got into them about 2 years ago, but I have been a bit of a fangirl ever since. They mixed my love of horror and metalcore in a way that just really hooked me. Also agree on how they handle their merch and especially special edition vinyls for their last two albums. I have more copies of Welcome to Horrorwood than I would like to admit. Hands down one of my favorite bands. I'm so happy to see the success they have achieved, it's well deserved. Can't wait to see them live sometime.
I have loved INK since 2014 and saw them live 3 times now, after the 2nd time seeing them i knew they would be my favorite and even got a tattoo of "it is the end" with the balloon with text saying "we all float down here" with the IX in the balloon, IT is also my one of my favorite horror movies, just had too! i will continue to love them with every release!
Well said. Excellent job using their career as an example of what it takes to find success in the industry. It's not for everyone. My group found moderate success and we managed to have some incredible experiences, but we ultimately threw in the towel after 6 years. The lifestyle wasn't a good fit for us and it was very stressful financially. Mowery was actually our manager for the tail end of our career. We were burned out and collectively decided that the work wasn't worth it even if we managed to climb up to higher tiers. I've been a INK fan since 2011 and I remember taking notes from their marketing, work ethic and hustle.
I remember meeting them at warped tour 08' selling cd's for like 5 bucks, it was the burning album. Never really got into them but wild to think they became as big as they are
Over the past year or two I've really refallen in-love with metalcore after nearly 10 years away from the scene. What did it was the Silver Scream, I had no idea about the band's history. The story of an underdog band arguably becoming one of the largest bands in the genre, gotta love it
A buddy of mine got me into INK not long after the first Silver Scream album dropped. He didn’t play me anything. He quizzed me on the track list to see if I could guess which films inspired the songs knowing I’m a massive horror fan. I gave the album a listen and I’ve been in love with the band ever since.
Man I fucking left when they were headlining a show with sirens and sailors back in 2013. Sirens were doing their cd release show in their hometown of Rochester New York, and I was like fuck this other band. I’d pay a shit ton to go back and see these dudes before they reealllyyy blew up
Man. I remember being blown away with Every Trick in the Book and how they really came into their own with the horror concept. Then loved that they made their own mini horror movie with the music videos from both Silver Scream albums. I truly hope they can continue on this wave.
INK is wonderful proof that all that matters in the music industry is the drive and power. They stayed hungry and devoured. They put in the work, put in the hours and now they can take what's theirs. I missed them at warped tour 2018 to meet nekrogoblikon and didn't think much of it but loved listening to the fastest way to a girls heart from a few tents away. Then silver scream dropped and I've been keeping it in my most listens on spotify every year since, can't wait for my year in review to list me in the top 0.1% listeners again!
ice nine kills has had a huge work ethic for over ten years. in 2007 i was in line at warped tour for a devil wears prada signing tent and the lead singer of INK came up to me trying to get me to buy their latest cd. it had what i should have learned in study hall on it. i told him i heard their band on purevolume and he gave me their record for free. good people
I remember back in 2007 at the Denver Warped Tour, we were leaving and when we got to the parking lot there was a band going around handing out EP's, and they came to us and handed us a copy of The Burning, and now they are this popular!
I liked what I heard off Every Trick in the Book, but their whole mini horror film they created as a meta-story with the singles for Silver Scream absolutely got me massively hooked on them. I'm not even a horror film fan, but I am a cinefile and just loved the genius idea of it all. Got me hook, line, and sinker. That thing like getting the original actor for Gage, or with Enjoy Your Slay (based on the Shining) with getting Kubrick's grandson to feature on vocals for another example. They're attention to that stuff just blew me away, along with the quality of their music - they became my favourite current band aswell as the top band for my daughters, my daughters boyfriend, even my wife loves them (she hates horror but still enjoys what they what do).
I remember these guys selling their EP at a show in Buffalo in maybe 2003-2004 and they weren't even playing the show. They just hung out and talked to everyone in the line and sold a ton of CDs. The promoter ended up kicking them out of the venue later in the night since they were technically "soliciting" but give them props for putting in the work.
I met Spencer at Warped Tour in 2008 where he convinced me into buying a copy of their EP lol man was hustling out there. He was very nice and I liked the EP, but I didn't really keep up with them. I'm so happy that they're still around and doing better and better. Also love that their name is a Kurt Vonnegut reference, and Spencer was pleased I knew that haha.
Used to play a lot of shows with these guys back in the day, as we worked a lot with Outerloop and they booked a lot of our shows. I had no idea they would get so good and become some big. Nothing but respect and love for them. Also can we just respect how amazing the instruments are in their current line up?
This was a fantastic and informative commentary of INK. I appreciate all your hard research that you gathered. I got into them in 2022 because my sons and I just finished binge watching a show and I needed something else to watch. My oldest told me about these guys and their Silver Scream videos. So I gave it a shot and was hooked! Shortly thereafter we find out about their convention in town and scored tickets to one day. I was IMPRESSED. I was like how good can it be? Eh. Let’s go. It wasn’t good at all. IT WAS EFFING AMAZING!!!! Their third Silver Scream Con is happening in a couple weeks and my son and I have met great people through their app. I’m truly happy for them.
I'm so mad that I didn't know who they were until December 2021!!!! They've quickly become my favorite band dethroning Muse!!!! I can't wait to see where things go from here for them!!!!!
I remember INK as being the band that everyone knew of but no one listened to a lot. Like I had friends that toured with the band, or knew them personally, and like everyone had met them at some point or another, but I wasn't ever really familiar with their music. But, the fact that I was always aware of them speaks to the fact that they were always grinding and always networking, which set the stage for when they finally released the silver scream, everyone knew them and was ready for them, ready they were familiar with the music or not
so glad they kept going through the tough times! I just found out about them a year ago and they are my current favorite band! Plus i just love spencers energy!
I love how much passion they put into their music and how over the top the videos are. It's what caught my attention a little over a year ago and now they're one of my top favorites. I've listened to Farewell II Flesh soooo many times
I was at Warped Tour in '06, and those dudes were there handing out free copies of "The Burning" I took the cd home and uploaded it to my iTunes and put it on my iPod and listened to it constantly. The Greatest Story Ever Told, Build Your Own Disaster & Last Words - great songs. Glad to see them getting the recognition they deserve.
Your videos are very informative, you're doing a great job! Also, i'm very happy for them, anyone who has this passion for their music deserves recognition
I had the pleasure of meeting Ricky from Ice Nine Kills this past weekend. These guys put their all into everything. They are marketing geniuses, I met him at a horror convention that they had a booth at.
