This video looks at the Great Bible of Henry VIII published in 1539, and it shows how the Tyndale translations were copied into the Coverdale and Matthew Bibles to end up making a uniquely Protestant Bible for a king who didn't want it.

Ryan, I just finished your book. Well done. In your book, (section on The Jewish Canon), there’s an incredible claim; you claim that: The author of the original texts and oral traditions were called directly by God. What’s the evidence for such an assertion? Why not weigh the chances of objective proof-for example Bayesian probability-the likelihood that a ‘god’ inspired text as conjecture and subjective? There's zero evidence of 'god'. And what defines ‘god’? Ever watch Ancient Aliens? ...Here's a reply: Apologists bend over backward to square the circle. You make the claim that…”The books of Moses and the larger and shorter prophetic books clearly fit into the category of God’s direct authorship-and written or recorded based on the teachings of Israelite leaders.” Where’s any objective evidence of an empirical foundation of the later KJV’s evidence of provenance? Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence. There is Zero primary source evidence. Oral traditions? The KJV, which BTW, has thousands of issues not outlined in your book i.e. there’s no primary sources or corroborating historical attestations of miraculous accounts in the KJV or its predecessor texts. Quite the contrary. A big, big, problem for the KJV as an authority. Interesting. Now that everyone has a phone with a camera available I can't wait for the upload to FB or RU-vid of any evidence of a divine miraculous event or the devil's influence i.e. demonic possession. *(Sources)* Scott, E.F., 1940. Tyndale wrote a book titled “The Obedience of a Christian Man” which was published in 1528. One point in Tyndale's book was it advocated that the king of a country was the head of that country's church, rather than the pope, and to be the first instance, in the English language at any rate, of advocating the divine right of kings, a concept mistakenly attributed to the Catholic Church. Despite being officially banned, Obedience was still very popular and widely read throughout England. Anne Boleyn, (who later to became Henry VIII's second wife) owned a copy. As Henry was trying to obtain permission from the Pope to divorce his first wife, Catherine of Aragon, Anne asked Henry to read Obedience. Afterward, Henry exclaimed, “This is a book for me and all kings to read”. It is believed that this book greatly influenced Henry VIII of England decision in declaring the “Act of Supremacy”, by which he became Supreme Head of the Church of England, in 1534. Tyndale's opposition to Henry's divorce from Catherine of Aragon earned him the king's enmity, but when Tyndale was arrested by the Roman Catholic authorities in Antwerp in 1535, Henry's chief minister Thomas Cromwell attempted unsuccessfully to intervene on his behalf. Tyndale was executed for heresy the following year.
@eddievangundy4510

Interesting. Thank you for that. These people that want to identify the king with the head of a church are misguided. Render unto Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and render unto God...
@_derpderp
@_derpderp Год назад
Is it ironic that Tyndale’s “Obedience” might have inspired the King on the one hand while forming much of the backbone for the KJV which in time would likely be the preferred translation for those most anti-hierarchical Protestant streams?
@adolphCat

@@eddievangundy4510There is only One Head of the Church Christ! However, the King is God's Anointed Prince, and is responsible before God for the Health and Well-being of the Church in all lands that God has given the King to Judge, Protect, and Guide the People. A Christian King is Anointed with the Holy Oils by the Bishop and with this Anointing comes Responsibility, Grace and Wisdom to Protect not only the Civil Government of the People, but also the Holy Church in all the Lands God has given the King Authority over. Christian Kings in neither the East or the West were considered simple layman, but a clergy member in spite of not being a Bishop, Priest, or Deacon. This is True not only under the New Testament, but also under the Old Testament. King David, Solomon, Josiah etc. Exercised Legitimate Authority over the Church of their day. The Archbishop or Metropolitan of the Kingdom is a legitimate subject of the Monarch of the Land. A Christian King is supposed to be an Icon of Christ for his people. Christ is the only perfect Icon of the Father!

The books that made it to the bible were screened through the Church Traditions (practices and beliefs originating from the Apostles). So it is this “Traditions” that defined the books of the bible, and thus superior. Is this correct?

Very good. One tiny correction: The pronunciation of "treacle" as in the "...the treacle bible.." is "tree kl" not "trek el"

Ryan, you have been saying for months that you will be back, but still no new videos. Have your plans changed? I still think this is the best historical theology channel on RU-vid, but I'll be very sad if this is your last video.

Hi there. Have you read Hilary Mantel's Thomas Cromwell trilogy? I recently bought Diarmaid MacCulloch's mammoth Cromwell biography. Looking forward to delving deeper into the period. I finished my PhD last year. My diss considered how revolutionary ideas transformed religiously-derived concepts of community in English, Irish, and Mexican Literature (1789-1832). The legacies of the Reformation as you know are still shaping England and Ireland at this time but now with the reality of revolution and revolutionary ideas impacting politics and culture. Now that I'm done with the diss, I've been wanting to know more about my time period's pre-history, especially in terms of the Reformation. Thought Mantel, one of the better historical novelists today if not the best, might be a fun way to do this. Your videos are interesting too. I'm also reading Lyndal Roper's Luther bio (she might have written two: I'm reading the newer bio, not the psychobiographical one, though I do want to read it too.) This is all to say: I've caught the Reformation History bug :-)

The Wolf Hall miniseries is a nearly perfect historical drama. Everything is so well done from the acting to the sets, the costumes, the lighting, all of it. The only thing that keeps it from seeming like they travelled back in time with cameras and filmed the actual events is the fact that so many of the actors have familiar faces from other movies and TV shows. Really hope they do another series for the third book with the same actors reprising their roles from Wolf Hall where ever possible.

In your research did you consider the literature of Jaroslav Pelikan, the book in particular The reformation of The Bible: The Bible of the reformation or any Eastern Orthodox scholars especially concerning the septuagint?
