In the entire god of war franchise, Baldur is the only one that I fought with a mix of fear and respect. He caught me totally off-guard at the beginning. Its an amazingly well-written character and performed excellently.
This really the opposite from the original norse mythos. Baldur wasn't that much of a hobo-drunken-like. "He’s loved by all the gods, goddesses, and beings of a more physical nature. So handsome, gracious, and cheerful is he that he actually gives off light." But as an Aesir, he's very much into a warlike disposition like his father and fellow brothers. In the original lore, he wasn't bothered if his physical means to feel rid off by his mother's spell. Understandably this is Santa Monica Director version of this norse gods where they are more prone as human-like.
@@rogueascendant6611 Either that or they tried to make all gods despicable so Kratos statements would make sense (there are no good gods) and carry this theme that we already had seen in the past games (all gods bein dicks). Some say the known disruption caused by pandora's box and the time travel after killing the sisters of fate, all that sudden twist of personalities in all mythological beings did not restrict itself to greek mythos but to all other, and that this would be further explained in the rest of this new trilogy. I mean, Odin was always a dick in the original story, but Baldur, Magni and Modi are all on the extreme opposite of their original counterparts.
@@turinmormegil7715 Noone is gonna feel bad for Baldur? The only reason why he could live that long with his mother spell is he was a god. If he were a mortal like us, he would go insane and eat his own flesh or something. He couldn't even commit suicide. His mind can be a little messed up a bit but that's really understandable.
@@themaskedmortal3561 are you on replying to the correct comment? Cuz I didn't say a thing about Baldur being relatable or not. I was talking about the fact states above by the guy I'm replying that te gods have completely opposite personalities compared to their original mythologicsl counterparts, and that this was evident in Baldr's case: in the mythos he was a God loves by all creation and everything mourned his death, this beggining Ragnarok. Here he is a dick thanks to losing his feelings (which the original didn't mind have Lost). My point is that the reason for this, considering the writing itself and consistency, is that they made this twist of personalities so Kratos statement about good gods, as well as the old players view in gods, thanks to the past trilogy, kept being a reality in this game. To explains this writing decision, some theorise that the lore would go as that "the changes in personality we saw after pandora's box was opened, thanatos killed and the Sisters of Fate taken down, didn't restrict to greece but to all unierse.
The moment you realize baldur is the perfect antagonist for kratos. Look at it this way Kratos: made to literally be able to kill anything Baldur: made to survive anything When an unstoppable force meets an immovable object
One, a God of War, capable of limitless destruction. The other, an indestructible God, void of any feeling, who simply wants to die, if he cannot truly live. Two engines of destruction that can neither break nor yield.
Baldur's whole speech works three ways, depending on how much you know... If this is your first game then it clues you in to what kind of man Kratos is. If you've played the series up to "now" you think he's talking about Kratos of Greece, the Ghost of Sparta. If you're in NG+ you KNOW he's been sent to find a Giant and thinks this large tall man is the one he's after.
@@alexandermaximvm6393 I've got the feeling Kratos will die protecting Atreus from Thor. Atreus will take refuge in Jotunheim but Kratos will resurface and Ragnarok will begin once they cross paths again.
@@cidiose well at this point in the life of kratos dead is just a medium walk to point A to point B, my issue es them in many myths there's a lot of ways of killing even the dead
Imagine if they had talked, and Baldur had left knowing Faye was dead, would they have even fought at all? Baldur didn't know Kratos was a god, or that Faye was dead, he only knew there was a Giant in that house, and was just tracking her ashes. When Kratos opened the door, he assumed that Kratos was the Giant he was after. He said himself, he only came for answers.
@@TheTigersSound no atreas is Loki because Faye was a FROST GIANT and kratos a GOD in norse mythology that is how Loki is born and also it literally says that at the end of the game
*"You can't win! I feel nothing! But you! You feel everything, yet, you keep trying! I'm not my brother! If only you gave me what I wanted, then it wouldn't have to end this way! But no! ... Let's finish this."* - Baldur to Kratos
The THUMBNAIL Baldur: Oh? you're approaching me? Kratos: I can't beat the shit out of you without getting closer Baldur: Oh, then come as close as you like
8:20 this part is severely underrated, Kratos going beast mode with spartan rage, the "spook" esc strings over the continuing drums of Baldur's theme. So badass
I am really not sure what version of deliverance I love the most this one or the original and what are those things behind Baldur and Atreus exactly on the second picture I think
The second we heard the theme, as the audience all knew “this guy is going to provoke the situation until it becomes violent.” It gave the gut feeling he was never gonna leave peacefully, and we hear it in the tonality of the theme.
Crossover: Genesect: Tell me what I want...Pain stops. Real simple °Smash the roof and see inside the house° Why are there two beds in there? Mewtwo(Smash Genesect under him and punch him aggressively): LEAVE....MY....HOME!
When you think about it, baldur is a very tragic character: he cant feel anything, and i mean anything, hes basically eternally numb. Not just pain, taste, touch, smell, hot, cold, sex, joy. He basically was forced to always feel nothing, this is basically a lesson that immortality is above all else, a curse. It leaves you so jaded that you soon long for the sweet release of death, theres a reason that humans have a limited life span, but baldurs a god, so whats more tragic than that?
I’m currently doing a full replay of both the new gow games. I haven’t done Thor yet, but tbh RIGHT NOW to my memory this opening fight with baldurs is better. With this fight you just feel more at STAKE.
When you feel only pain mental or physical and to be scared to e joy anything good or if good things do happen you fear bad things have to happen to balance things out to fear enjoyment because you feel you haven’t earned it to only feel comfort in pain Because you only know it and trust it not because you want to but because of how you have come to that point in your life That it a form of torment too
I’ve listened to this theme a while back… I haven’t felt pain since Edit: fun fact: Baldur was the heir to Asgard in the mythology until his death, and he comes back at the end of Ragnarok to be the lone god of the new world even though multiple gods survive Ragnarok
Everybody said Thor vs kratos or Odin vs kratos is is epic but IM feeling like baldur vs kratos is more Legendary and it feels like they're more like heavy and 2 beast fight and kill each other to protect themself
The violin at 8:37 invokes images of Freya screaming helplessly from the sidelines, begging Kratos and Baldur to stop fighting. 😟 And of course, the rhythm resumes at 8:41 as they completely ignore her.
Baldur and Thor have two of the best themes to come out of either of the Norse God of War games, purely because of how well they fit their characters. Baldur's theme sounds, ominous almost insane and rather tragic at times. Thor's feels like you're face to face with the end of the world.
“HAHAHA and here I thought your kind was supposed to be so enlightened, so much better than us, so much smarter and yet you hide out here in the woods like a coward”
Baldur was really underutilized don’t get me wrong he’s a great villian but he only in the game for 30 minutes in a 20 hour game and he really isn’t the main focus like how Zeus and ares were.
Best part of the whole OST. I wish there were more released tracks of the moments this mottif came in. It feels strangely nostalgic and spartan. Like all that violence from the past quietly emerged back to the surface now and again
Extraño: " Pensé que eras más grande, pero sin duda eres tú, estás lejos de casa, eh? " Kratos: " Qué quieres? “When Odin sent me here I just needed answers but you you had to act all proud, throw whatever you have at me I’ll keep comin that old body will give out, but before I end this I want you to know one thing hehaha I can’t feel any of this.”
I enjoyed ragnarok a lot. Hard choice between the two games to actually say which I prefer But Baldur is certainly the best antagonist to come from the new games. An absolute all timer even.
