I have the perfect comparison for this movie. Remember the Geico commercial with the chainsaw killer and the group of Young adults run into the garage filled with hanging chainsaws instead of getting in the running car. And the killer rolls his eyes at how dumb they are. That’s this movie. It’s an extended version of that commercial.
The motorcycle, the noise, the shower, the hair dryer---none of these things bothered me. BUT, her getting high when she's worried about a person outside, that one was too hard to get past.
@@vitaminwater9662 one time I was watching the first look’ video of the first episode of the 15th season of drag race, then I got an ad that immediately said “ hi I’m Sasha Colby, and I’m the winner of season 15 of Ru Paul’s drag race” 💀💀 Not that I didn’t know already, she could have won in her sleep
I have asthma, inhalers aren't just pumping oxygen into your lungs. Put very simply, attacks cause your airways to close up, which then is relieved by inhaling the medication. Just sucking in more air isn't going to do much. If anything, it could make things worse because you're basically giving yourself a panic attack.
Yeah I was thinking you inhale and exhale into a paper bag when you’re having a panic attack to inhale extra Co2 because you’re hyperventilating. A crumpled water bottle w a hole (I think it had a hole?) is not a rescue inhaler, that’s often albuterol which actual opens your airways up (bronchodilator).
Was about to write this since I'm asthmatic too. It's like the people who made the movie did absolutely no research. Like that's basic. Just ask an asthmatic what's in an inhaler or search it up on Google :l
I was about to write this since I have asthma too. It's like the writers did no research at all. Just look it up on Google or ask an asthmatic what's in an inhaler They fumbled that real bad :l
Gonna go ahead and seond this comment. That is the most confusing choice. The only thing I can come up with is that they confused asthma for anxiety attacks and the old trope of breathing into a paper bag?
Even Saw took the time to incorporate a realistic tracheotomy scene when the detective was underwater. But the writers fabricate this phony water bottle scene to try and utilize it as an inhaler lol😂
"because you're home" implies a sense of intrusion on privacy, intrusion on a place that should be safe from the outside world, without meaning just "house" and that's why it's impactful. on the other hand, "because you're HERE" doesn't carry the same intimacy. could be "here" like at the gas station, like on the street, like in any other random place. the element of the real intrusion (the intrusion on privacy) is lost.
I actually really like the change to “because you’re here.” It highlights that it could have been anyone but it just happens to be these two, the emphasis on this being a seemingly random attack adds to the discomfort
@@therenegade916 personal preference obviously but i feel that “because you were here” highlights that way more and was much more impactful to me personally
For a more expansive play on the line, see the final scenes of "Zulu" (1964). Sergeant explains to frightened soldier why their tiny encampment is under attack by 4,000 Zulu warriors: "Because we're here".
I tend not to judge one's actions in horror movies simply because I have no idea how I would act if I were put in a terrifying situation. Sometimes it is hard tho lol. But I don't always feel someone staring at me. That might be the autism though.
@@fernandomaurillovega6278I’m autistic too and I’m VERY paranoid. So I would be freaking out just by the knock alone. My dad is a police officer and growing up he made me so sheltered. I was terrified of being outside by myself until I was about 19. I still don’t like it even, I can only be outside alone in places I’m used to.
I noticed that too, if they had stopped and gotten fresh groceries to make nice meal and then fridge was broken, then maybe (not really even) it would make more sense? I'm giving it too much thought even then..
@@luke.jaguar what about finding a more plausible thing that actually would make them call assistance even for that one night? Like the bathroom door being stuck or The pipes being broken?
@@noisyravioli9079 Right? Like literally anything else. The kitchen sink pipe is leaking water on the floor, that would demand more urgent attention. But one night where it's already 9pm and you're just there till morning doesn't need an urgent repair for a warm fridge at all
This trilogy really should’ve been one 2-3 hour movie instead of 3 dragged out movies. This first one could’ve been cut down to like a 20-30 minute “act one” of a film. We’ve seen it all before.
OMG that woulda been better. Imagine them doing the do, then taking off their masks with each other but never revealing their faces to the camera then we follow them for Act 2.
The thing that makes the scene where sackhead is in the background so special in the original is that he fades in so subtly, it unsettles you and makes you scan the background of every scene after. The reality of that situation is so terrifying, the thought that the last time the hairs on the back of your neck stood up, was that because someone was watching you from the dark? It’s beautiful.
Everything you said I agree. And the boyfriend accidentally shooting some random person was dumb. But then when he had a chance to shoot the actual killer, he literally had the gun to her head for so long and he didn’t kill her!!! Yet he kills a random innocent person by mistake. Sooo stupid 😂
Yeah it really sucks that this movie had a higher opening weekend than actual good to great horror movies like Abigail, Immaculate, The First Omen and Lisa Frankenstein like seriously what is going on
The thing with remakes is it should offer something on top of the original. Give the audience a reason to want to watch that adds to the story or offers something. The whole time I was thinking “why am I watching the exact same movie as the 2008 version but way worse”
I'm fine with more direct remakes when there are decades between them. Or when creating the same movie in a different language. 16 years is not even remotely enough time. The 2008 movie holds up just fine still and there isn't even that significant of change in technology etc.
This movie just felt like someone watched the original, took random aspects, and just slapped them into this one. Like “We need the husband to leave like the original? Sure, we’ll make a random plot point so he leaves. We need the kids? Sure, just slap them in at the beginning, that’ll be scary”
They should really make a horror of someone with anxiety where they're alert and don't miss anything happening in the house but can't do anything about it, like doing the opposite of all the scenes you mentioned. Because that would be me alone and paranoid 😂
I want a movie where the paranoid person keeps acting panicked throughout the whole movie even before the killers come, and the whole time they're trying to get the character's attention or at least sneak by or miss their shot at attacking, then when it comes to the killers confronting and about to kill him or her, a monster comes out of nowhere and devours them And its revealed the monster turned out to be the main character's emotional support teddy bear that the main character does not realize is a monster in disguise that's protecting him or her from intruders
The marking for this moving is so bizarre. Like it was “See how the strangers became the strangers” but now I’m hearing it’s a remake???? If this is supposed to be the prequel to the first one (which is what I thought this was) they should’ve made the strangers the main characters and actually showed how they became killers instead of whatever it was we got 💀
If it’s supposed to be a prequel to the 2008 film then why do they have iPhones???? Those were not common in 2008 and they didn’t look like that. I can’t tell if it was a prequel or reboot 😭
The point about making loads of noise… I lived in the countryside in North Wales very briefly in my exes house (I was between moving) years ago. My ex worked nights. He left for work one night around 8pm in his car leaving the driveway empty. It was the middle of winter, so was already dark, and not long after he’d left, someone knocked on the door. I assumed it was him forgetting something. So I opened it and this guy was there but he’d stepped back against the fence so his face was in shadow. He then started asking some random questions about one of the neighbouring properties, and once I said sorry I closed the door. As soon as I did that, I felt my anxiety skyrocket. I ran upstairs, and tried to look out of the window and just watched him get in his car a little down the street and just sit there. Eventually he left. Chances are it was nothing, but the last time I wanted to do was to make loads of noise. I felt super anxious and just made sure everything was locked and curtains drawn and stuff. It was fine in the end and nothing happened, but I didn’t just go and have a shower. 😂
The original has a special place in my heart for the use of sound design. That record player blasting while they were in the closet, and the aftermath of that scene, really got me. I won't be seeing the new one after all the horrible things I've heard about it. It makes me so sad.
The only thing I wanted to add is that the 2 boys with the bike is a call to the ‘original story’ that this is loosely based on known as the Keddie Cabin Murders. A family was found murdered by a pair of Mormon boys on a bicycle.
Also, this being a prequel with them a.) using a phone flashlight at all, and b.) using a smart phone made in the modern era is SO incredibly annoying. It’s not a prequel if you’re using technology that is from post-original movie. Like the prop department couldn’t be utilized for more than a couple of masks? Totally takes you out of universe and the movie.
This whole move pissed me off. Literally every stupid decision. Also the constant trips!! No one in this movie could walk without tripping! Also that was clearly the Mormon boy at the door! That was not a girl. At least I’m 95% sure it was the Mormon boy
You didn’t mention how the boyfriend could have got into a running car left behind by the stranger when he rammed their car into the tree … but he went into the woods. 😂
i love watching all the strangers chapter 1 rants xD. I was so close to walking out of the movie during the whole "they say the first kill is the hardest" scene 💀
14:45 I would NOT take a shower, hell, I don't like taking showers when I'm alone in my own house during the day, not because of creepy intruders, but because my mom fell out of a shower and broke her shoulder a year ago so I am not doing that when there's no-one around to help!
🖐 asthmatic. Nope. Inhalers do not contain air and only air. They contain aerosolized medication you must breathe in with air to make your lungs calm the hell down. But, great video. Love your work. Happy to see your video post! Love them
I watched this movie this week and when Maya (Madeline Petch) was in the closet, I kept on saying “turn off your flashlight!!” I’m so glad I wasn’t the only one who saw it lol
I will give the director who did Prey at Night major props for coming up with scenes that really stood out, especially how the music was incorporated into the scenes like the Air Supply song playing while the girl is running from the flaming truck. After hearing this review though, I think I will skip the theater and wait for it to come out on TV/streaming.
Honestly I would love to see The Strangers done in the past like the old west or the far future, you know have fun with the idea and if they want to expand the "lore" with something interesting
Biomedical engineer here who works on medical devices! The reasons inhalers work is the medication inside. The molecules in the medication cause the muscles in the lungs to relax, and the inhaler is just the mechanism that delivers the medication. Using a plastic water bottle would not help because there is no medication to relax the lungs. It’s like giving a person an IV but not putting anything inside the IV. This detail drove me absolutely nuts and totally took me out of the movie.
As much as I'm here for you bringing us news on horror you actually like and I'm excited about... I LOVE your rants. 😂😂 Also, as a service industry person I can absolutely tell you that people give me their life story when they order food. That they're vegetarian, why they're vegetarian, the last time they ate something they're allergic to and every. single. reaction their body had to said allergy.
i always enjoy your videos but you were so dry and sarcastic and hilarious in this one i have giggled and rewatched twice, i love the sass i gotta be honest i need to find more rant videos
You are so hilarious!! I laughed aloud multiple times and with past videos i’ve sent clips of you to people who don’t even have the context and they still think it’s funny.
I live for your rants and you are just so spot on when it comes to the movies coming out lately. I rarely make it out to the theaters for this reason and I miss being excited for a new release. 😔
I was looking for a review video of The Strangers: Chapter 1 and I was soo glad to see you'd made one (rant and all)! I love hearing your articulation of your takes whether or not I personally share them. Cool to hear how you'd changed your mind about The Strangers 2008, too, since the same happened to me! Home invasion is my favorite trope now because it scares me so much :) Great video!!
I remember being confused by the "because you're here" line in the trailer cause my brain understood it as them targeting people who specifically stay at the Airbnb. That added with all the creepy towns people made me think that they wete adding a like, supernatural or cult aspect to the strangers which put me off of watching the movie. Glad I didn't waste money on a ticket.
Watching you and Cody leach both go off on a Rant during your reviews, have made my year. 🤣🤣 I appreciate the hilarious rants. I haven’t seen the movie but I want too just to experience the rants. 🤣
Another thing that really bothered me about this movie was the production of it. I think the producer themselves said that they “didn’t watch the original until they finished filming” which is just such an obvious lie. They also said “they didn’t want to make a sequel like prey at night” in a sort of “rude” way even though that was an actually good movie while this was.. something
Omg, I thought I was the only person that noticed how stupid our main girl was. It’s hard to fathom ANYONE doing ANYTHING that she did in this movie. Profoundly bad decisions all over the place. I literally spent most of my time screaming and grunting at the TV ! 🙄🙄🙄
LITERALLY people always complain how she was acting dumb in the cabin but she shouldn’t of even been in that situation in the first place they literally gave her and Ryan a car to go to the same air bnb that they pointed out someone was murdered in. I get their car was broke down but they literally could’ve gotten a motel or something not the exact place they were lured too 💀
I haven’t even seen this movie yet, but I’ve been WAITING for this rant. Sarah, I live for your rants. This one I will definitely wait until streaming if I even choose to watch it at all
So I don’t watch much of trailers I usually stop after 20 seconds and I regret stopping early for this one. I regret going in blind because maybe a quick google search would have told me this was a remake. I was so irritated when it was playing and I’m sitting there like ughhhhh it’s a remake!? I bamboozled myself 😂….. okay I just saw your note about it being an attempted prequel to which I say what!? lol love your videos!!!! ❤
There are so many other options for remakes just sitting out there. Especially from the 1970s. Here are some of those I'd like to see a remake of: Martin (1976) The Sentinel (1977) Let's Scare Jessica to Death (1971) Tales From the Crypt (1972l Theater of Blood (1973) A lot of these are unknown to younger audiences and with a few changes here and there would seem more fresh than remakes of The Strangers.
So true. Imo, remakes should be given to movies that either A) had serious potential but were held back by their budget or the technology of the time, B) just weren’t compatible with the sensibilities of mainstream audiences at the time but could be big hits now because their premises are timely, or C) are so layered and artistic that a remake or reinterpretation could be just as interesting as the original even if the original was already great (like Suspiria).
Hi! I have never responded to you before, but I Get You. I understand your exasperation. I happen to love your rants. I’m the horror guy in the relationship, but my husband is a Mass-Com educator and he eavesdrops and loves them as well. Your arguments are well founded and supported. Please don’t ever stop; your tastes seem to run congruent to mine. I also love found footage. Please never stop.
Watching this review, and you just get it!!! I'm a massive fan of the og and i always have been a defender of it ! it holds such an amazing place in my heart, and i agree with every word you have just said about the new one. also in no way was this a prequel, it was just a bad version of the og. i came out of it and tried to find the positives in it but the more i think about it I just dont really have any at all.
so i actually went to see this with my partner who used to work in ems and the water bottle thing helps to trigger the vegas(sp?) nerve which can calm the anxiety therefore helping you to breathe slower through the inflammation
Scrunching up a water bottle definitely will not generate oxygen gas, but that's not what you're looking for from an inhaler. Inhalers deliver corticosteroids, so I was very confused about what was trying to be accomplished with no medicine. But apparently water vapor can give slight relief for slight breathing difficulty, but certainly is not effective for a full asthma attack. This was still a really strange choice only made stranger by the choice of the asthmatic person not having their inhaler with them. (Pun intended)
Great rant! I can also spend an enormous time complaining about this film. In my theater we had people walk out. You touched on my biggest issue that is suppose to be a RANDOM act of violence yet the end credit scene destroys that and makes this not a Starngers movie.
Yesss Drag Ittt!!! lol I LOVEEE the original 2008 movie and this reboot was so disappointing 🙃🙃 I will probably still watch the other chapters only because I have regal unlimited and it’ll be free 🤣 but I’m definitely not excited about them
