For years, Monday Night Football started at 9:00 Eastern. However, in an effort to combat declining ratings, ABC and the NFL decided, during week 15 of the 1984 NFL season between the Los Angeles Raiders and the Detroit Lions, to try something different. As for what happened next, the result may surprise you

This is almost as crazy as when CBC & the NHL decided 3 years earlier to take Hockey Night in Canada (which is normally on Saturday night) & move it to Friday nights for the entire season. Previously the only time that CBC aired NHL games on weekdays was during the playoffs or for special occasions like Canadian Thanksgiving, Boxing Day & New Years Day. However CBC wanted to get higher ratings on Friday nights as their slate of programming did not draw high ratings with millions tuning into rival networks like CTV which had popular US programming of the time while CBC only had their own produced programming & Coronation Street. However this did not work at all for a few reasons. One is that the US teams & their local broadcasters (mainly the Chicago Blackhawks) objected to this big time because it meant they had to start games 30 minutes earlier if they were playing a Canadian team at home & people could not get home from work to watch their team play either in person or on TV. Also it strained the relationship between the NHL & the upstart USA Network who had the national TV rights in the US because USA was forced to move their game of the week from Friday nights to Monday night competing head to head with MNF since the other days of the week, they had other programming including a live NBA game (a rarity at the time) on Wednesday nights. Lastly because they had moved Hockey Night in Canada to Friday nights, CBC got absolutely thrashed in the ratings on Saturday nights because they had nothing good to air. CBC & the NHL quickly realized this mistake & since 1982, Hockey Night in Canada has largely remained in its Saturday night time slot barring the playoffs & the special occasions I mentioned above.

Didn't help matters that hockey's always been a distant fourth out of the four major sports, the fact that three Canadian teams won seven straight Cups from, 1984-1990, came dangerously close to killing its marketability in the U.S. permanently, simple as that.

@@matthewdaley746 And while I get the TV Executives back then to not showing NHL regular season on the then big 3 broadcast networks of ABC, CBS and NBC got to say this. It was a disgrace that at least a few games of the Stanley Cup Finals did not air on a major National TV over the air channel in the US for close to 15 years. And America lost out at least a couple of times a year in late Spring watching arguably the best team in NHL history led Wayne Gretzky/Mark Messier and the Edmonton Oilers. One of the dumbest decisions in American Sports Broadcast history to not show at least a couple games of the NHL Finals on either NBC, CBS or ABC between 1981-94.

Excellent job on this video. As the video started I was thinking about all the reasons why ABC did this and you detailed exactly all the reasons during the video. I also clearly remember that show "Call to Glory" with Craig T. Nelson and a young Elizabeth Shue. American Idol 30 correctly points out that in 1998 ABC did try to 820pm start time for one season. The landscape of Pro Football has changed so much since 1984 as now we have access to all the games, three prime time games each week. A black Friday game this year. A Peacock only Wild Card Game. Finally I would like to mention in NYC we only got the Jets and Giants games. NYC only got a doubleheader if both teams were either on the road or one team was not playing on Sunday.

I think the strike from 2 seasons ago (in 1982)and the Fan/Viewer pushback was still the main reason for among the lowest TV ratings/viewership in the modern era i.e after the 1970 merger. Then the next season in 1985, it can be argued that really changed the NFL forever. Highlighted by the Bears near undefeated championship season, and new future legendary HOF stars i.e Montana, Marino, Rice, etc all having record breaking seasons being the catalysts. IMO the 1985/86 season is when the NFL took off on its rise to become not only America's most popular sports by another planet. It also has now become the most important 'brand' in all of entertainment and popular culture in the US and now in recent years Internationally as well. Now 40 years after maybe it's lowest point in modern league history las well.

@kyle1910 The Steelers have only themselves to blame for that, in 1977, they were worse, than, 1976, in 1978, Terry Bradshaw pulled a career year out of thin air, in 1979, their defense bailed them out, the Oilers kept the Chargers from thrashing them, and, the Rams made just enough mistakes, they were done almost before the victory parade ended, they got old, and, they fell for Terry Bradshaw's fluky 1982 season, he stole one last paycheck, and, all it cost them was Dan Marino.

@@matthewdaley746Was Ted Hendricks’ retirement really unexpected? The 1983 season was his 15th pro season.

@veggieoilerfan2940 Yes, it happened literally right before the season, and, unlike, The, Two Jacks, in Pittsburgh, he was still playing at a high level, it was just the start of a drought that has yet to stop.

Why was broadcasting in the 80s so terrible?
@thegoldfly1
@thegoldfly1 9 месяцев назад
Because you are used to the 40 years that technology has advanced? Watching the video doesn't look that bad to me. I mean yeah if the broadcast looked like that now I'd think it was terrible but just looks normal to me(thinking back to what TV was like at the time).

@@thegoldfly1 Even though I enjoy the so called 'score bug" that shows for the entire game barring commercials, the score/time on the clock or inning, etc. there is a negative to the state of the art broadcasting here in the 2020's, I really can't stand. That is the station/network logo & trademark all over the screen on all of these sporting events. The worst is when the team officially wins the championship i.e Super Bowl, etc. with say the Fox logo covering 1/2 the screen especially during the trophy presentation.

Honestly, the experiment sounds fine, at least as a pilot study. There’s only so many MNF games a season, its not something you can do easy A-B type testing for. The real problem was with the data analysis, because when we’re dealing with a blacked out home team, a west coast visiting team whose fans would be disadvantaged by the moved up start time, a clearly uncompetitive contest with no stakes late in the season? Yeah, those ratings numbers, only a bit below average for the season, sound good. In a single study like that, you’re basically just looking to see if more experiments are warranted, and the experiment does test the primary worry, that the earlier start time would overly impact west coast viewership, which it seems like it didn’t. But otherwise, in capable hands, this would’ve been strong evidence to support trying out more 5pm/8pm start time games in the following season.

I have a hunch that the ratings for this game would've been a bit better than the were had the Metro Detroit, Toledo, Flint/Saginaw and Lansing DMAs not been blacked out. ABC using this meaningless game alon3 as justification for the late start time makes no sense given all the variables involved.

This feels like history repeating itself. Oversatuation of games stretched over streaming platforms, games in other countries, too many rule changes/implementations, poor officiating...just a bad, bloated league. Thanks Roger Goddell. Enjoy your bonus.
