Celebrate Christmas by watching two old Hollywood holiday gems about escaping trios of criminals!
Start off with "3 Godfathers" (1948), directed by John Ford. John Wayne, Pedro Armendáriz and Harry Carey Jr. (the film is dedicated to his father, Harry Carey) play three outlaws who rob a bank and escape into the desert while being chased by a posse led by sheriff Perly Sweet (Ward Bond). Our bandits stumble onto a dying woman in labor. Right before dying she names them all her son's godfathers and makes them promise to bring him to safety. It all happens during Christmas time by the way.
The second film is "We're No Angels" (1955), directed by Michael Curtiz. Humphrey Bogart, Peter Ustinov and Aldo Ray play three outlaws who just escaped Devil's Island into Cayanne in French Guiana. They hide out in a failing merchant's shop with the intention of robbing the place blind at night. The family's kindness though gives them a change of heart and they decide to use their illegal skills to solve every single problem - professional and personal - the family is facing.

On the surface a strange trio of stars in Humphrey Bogart, Peter Ustinov and Aldo Ray but it works wonderfully because they're all proper stars who know what they do well and don't get in each other's way as performers. See also, Bogart and Holden, Redford and Newman and Burton and Eastwood.

Thank you. As a huge Bogart fan, I especially look forward to 'We're no Angels.' Some supplementary viewing your audience might enjoy is the episode from Mark Kermode's 'Secrets of Cinema' on Christmas movies, in which he points out that they're all tales of redemption. It's a nice lens through which to view Eyes Wide Shut.

OMG, I thought that I was the only person that watched these. I watch the original "We're No Angels" (not the horrible 90s remake) and the original "Three Godfathers" almost every year. (My Xmas list involves many great classics). Anyways, Cheers and Merry Christmas!

Excellent choice of forgotten Christmas movies. Especially "We're No Angels". A great cast, especially the three convicts (Aldo Ray is so underrated), and there should also be at least a mention of Adolf, the pet snake, who also plays a prominent, if unseen role in the film. And the ending? Beautifully done. There was, unfortunately, a remake/reboot in 1989, starring Robert De Niro and Sean Penn, which was nowhere near as good.

Great recommendations. I have the DVD "We're no angels" on my shelf, and I absolutely love it, it's so great, Peter Ustinov, Humphrey Bogart and the rest of the cast did a hilarious job! But I did't know the other one yet. Now because of your video I found there will be a brand new blu ray release of "3 godfathers" in January 2024 (a media book) in Germany and just placed my pre-order. 😇Thanks! Ustinov was to go on to portray King Herod in Zeffirelli's epic '77 miniseries Jesus of Nazareth. Always loved Maurice Jarre's music from that film especially the "Three Kings" theme.

I've seen 3 Godfathers before, since it's a John Ford film. Haven't seen We're No Angels, though. That sounds like fun.

Thanks for sharing and Merry Christmas! It's quite incredible comparing and analysing these recommendations to the movies done today with cuts every 2 seconds. We can see here the effort behind the composition but also the actors that actually act and impersonate, rather than doing close-up, cut, zoom in, close up, one line of dialogue, shot, reverse shot, and so on. I wonder what more recent movies, let's say by decades from the 90's to now, you would recommend.

Please Analyse Jubilee. It’s a great show and probably the closest thing that comes to ‘Perfect Modern Directing’ in recent Indian Cinema accompanied by Great set design and Cinematography. Learnt a lot from your videos. Merry Christmas.
