Does the American Broadcasting Company hate America? Well, Minnesota Vikings head coach Bud Grant certainly thought so. Prior to week 3 of the 1985 season, when the Chicago Bears were set to take on the Minnesota Vikings, ABC made a decision that absolutely riled up Grant to the point where he launched a public crusade against the network

Bud Grant actually changed his mind regarding participating in the National Anthem. He clearly stated that what makes America great is being able to choose! Having a “CHOICE” is the biggest gift that this country can offer its citizens. He was asked if he could go back in time what would he change, and he clearly said that he would change his approach on participating in the National Anthem. There’s no RIGHT OR WRONG way to participate in the National Anthem’s celebration, you can either participate or not participate. Because that’s what makes this country great, having a CHOICE and not being accused of being “ANTI-AMERICAN” for making a statement that is dear to your heart. The most PATRIOTIC thing one can do is RESPECTING others civil liberties, you don’t have to agree with their views….. but respect it. And it’s comical how most people who trying to force people to STAND AT ATTENTION never serve their country in the military but have so much to say. My dad was a “Tunnel Rat” in Vietnam and he not only supported Kaepernick, but he also supported my players who wanted to participate in the protest as well by joining them with his VETERANS hat including my mom who served 21 years in the Navy. Both supported my players and I as their coach, and we won a lot of games especially against some teams who didn’t agree with our position. That actually was the best part, and it felt great doing so. There’s a HUGE difference between PATRIOTISM and NATIONALISM.

I like Bud Grant and appreciate his personal integrity, but It was not fair to call ABC unpatriotic. The anthem was scheduled for 6:59. The broadcast started at 7. The anthem is for the event itself. The fans who bought tickets and came saw it the same. Many who champion Bud Grant on this have no problem with regular season sports broadcasts today not including the anthem. It’s easy to be hypocritical on emotional issues like this.

So we live in North Korea 🇰🇵 now? I thought we lived in AMERICA, were each citizen can choose to either STAND or KNEEL during the anthem. Finally, maybe you know this or maybe you don’t but Grant changed his tune regarding standing up for the anthem. He was asked about it during Colin Kaepernick protest and he clearly stated that Colin has every right to protest because it’s his freedom of expression. Therefore, what’s UNPATRIOTIC Is forcing people to do something they disagree with in a country that brags about FREEDOM FYI: my dad spent his days as a “Tunnel Rat” in Vietnam and not only did he support Kaepernick, but he participated in the protests as well when I was coaching high school football.
@MrRyguy2112
@MrRyguy2112 Год назад
@@gregd4633 Not saying you don't have freedom to protest. In the time of Bud getting after abc it was a different time. I'm just more in favor of choosing a different venue in which to express your message so there isn't any confusion and some veterans don't get the wrong message, regardless of the intent. Kapernick has every right to protest how he wants. That's what freedom is or should be. As long as people who paid with their lives are not forgotten or slighted. ( Even though veterans have been treated pretty piss poor by the government)

Perhaps if he'd focused more on coaching the team and less about how the players were standing while an old British drinking song with new lyrics was being played before the game, the Vikings may have actually won a Super Bowl. Instead, in all four Super Bowls Bud Grant coached in, the team looked unprepared and wound up getting stomped every time. And why did the head coach of an NFL team care how the network airing the game ran their broadcast? Lombardi, Landry, Shula, Walsh, Belichick...none of them gave/give a damn about that crap; they had/have more important things to do. Note - this isn't a criticism of JG9. This, like all of his videos, was very entertaining, thoroughly researched, and well produced.
