Judging by the quality of this video, I thought this would be from a million subs channel, a 100k view video, but its only 250 views. Why? This is some disrupt level quality
The dude is nothing short of a marketing genius - anything less would've made it impossible for music this inaccessible to reach such a level of notoriety. He knew very well that getting people to endlessly speculate about you because of the artificial mystery you had created can be just as effective as a large-scale, high-budget PR campaign - obviously he never made it big, but he made it surprisingly big for how extraordinarily weird his music is. He gave an interview to Wire in '14, and he was clearly playing a character there, it was almost like he was doing a Mark E Smith bit. He went on disjointed rambles about nothing, he seemed bitter and egotistical, and it all really fit his music, but it was in vast contrast with literally every single other interaction he had with people in real life. Anyone who's organized or played in a Jandek performance, or just met him at one of his shows will describe him as shy, unassuming, and very kind. He's just a normal dude who likes making weird music. Blue Corpse is my favorite album from him.
I don’t know. I think he’s a genius and all but I know people who he dealt with when he was doing marketing. I love his style of marketing, but I would argue that it wasn’t very effective Period. He freaked people out. There were like 10 people in DC who knew about the Jandek section in Melody records in Dupont Circle, right behind the Stevie Moores records. Not many people were really interested in them. I was though. I love his marketing techniques, but he was just a man out of time. He was in the wrong place at the wrong time. I think he has some issues with something. Being in public. Being super private. I think he could’ve been much more famous in his obscurity if he had tried. He really is a guitar hero to me. He helped me understand that I could do whatever the fuck I wanted to do on guitar.
This video popped up and as a fan of all things outsider I had to click though familiar with the enigma that is Jandek. I just want to say how impressed I was with your research and editing. I hope you continue to grow and gain more fans.
This is great!!! I love obscure artists. I recently was introduced to R. Stevie Moore's music by a music industry friend. I like to think my music is similarly obscure.
His playing has influenced me as much as Robert Fripp, Fred Frith, John Fahey, or Michael hedges. Even Allan Holdsworth is only half as mesmerizing as Jandek. I’m getting ready to do a collaboration with a woman who has worked with him. I mean, I really want to collaborate with this person because of who they are but the fact that she has played with Jandek is truly the icing on the cake. I’ve been slightly obsessed with his work since the 1980s.
Jandek made it onto my turntable early 90’s….in England. Then it was strange. You weren’t even born then. There was no internet. No film of him . No interview. No radio play. Just some reviews in an obscure American magazine called Forced Exposure that had made it to England. I still have those records. You only need one and that’s You Walk Alone. His CDs sound crap so good luck finding this one on record 😂
Wonder how much it cost back then to get fmu & 3 other fm statios to do that. Great marketing strategy. Off and running. I'm at 9:17 and I'm thinking individual artist & owner of Norwood & the ' music' probably sucks. The co-worker at fmu was jandek.
