Limited edition cars are dying out, being nowhere near as common as they were 20+ years ago. Is this a good thing, and were any of those old editions interesting?
- Note 1: The greenscreen chromakeying is slightly worse in this video than in my other videos. This is because I thought my shirt wasn't green enough to be picked up - I was wrong, and thus had to adjust the settings from what I usually use, resulting in worse effect quality. Sorry!
- Note 2: This video was originally titled 'Strange Special Editions - The Good, the Bad and the Allegro'

The Sundowner was from an Australian Marketing campaign, GM(H) Australia marketed the Sandman Panel van range and Ford replied with the Sundowner range using their Falcon Panelvan and also the Escort Panel van, this obviously went to Britain but as the Falcon was a rarity in the UK the UK received the Escort version. Basically an upspec Escort van with sundowner decals.

Yes, it made sense for the Aussie market but in the UK hardly anyone at the time knew about the Falcon and Sandman vans, so it looked very odd to them.

The Sundowner was Ford Australia's answer to the panel van craze here in Australia in the 70's. There were three of them, the Escort, the Transit van (running a 4.1 kiter six) or the Falcon with the choice of that six or two V8's.
@DangerAngelous
@DangerAngelous Год назад
4:55 The Escort Sundowner is a follow on from the Falcon Sundowner, which itself was a catch up to the Holden Sandman (45% surfing wagon ,55% shagging wagon) all in Australia, definitely not intended for rallying more than wet sand
@full-service-history
@full-service-history Год назад
I've heard of both of those Australian vans, but I included the Escort Sundowner specifically due to how out-of-date it was in 1978/79 - the Falcon and Holden suited the era, the Escort came much later.

@@full-service-history The Escort was not really late to the market at all, as the Escort Van had been on the market as the Mk 1 Escort and the Mk 2 Escort van was the same vehicle, but with the Mk2 front end welded to the Mk1 back end! It was well loved by utilities companies such as Telecom Australia, etc, & florists, or anyone that needed a more compact van than those on offer from the big three. Ford, Holden and even Valiant all had large sedan-based vans on the market, with Valiant being the minnow. With regards to the Escort Van, though, it hadn't had the same "love" from ordinary consumers with regards to them wanting a van for the purposes of "horizontal folk dancing" in the way that the Falcon or Holden vans had, but the shortness of the bed area was the reason for that, hence why I mentioned elsewhere that Ford created the fold-down flap to address this short-coming.
@full-service-history
@full-service-history Год назад
@@sean640307 this is only vaguely related, but those 'Mk2' estates with the Mk1 back end have always slightly unnerved me, a bit like the VWGolf Mk3 cabrio being given a facelift and sold as the 'Golf Mk4 cabrio'. I may do a video on this phenomenon in the future actually, "Cars pretending to be newer models", alongside stuff like the Peugeot 206+ and Renault Clio Mio.
@sean640307
@sean640307 Год назад
@@full-service-history unfortunately, we never got the estate versions of the Escort. I guess the feeling here for Ford Australia was that segment of the market was too small to go through the ADR (Australian Design Rules) process to warrant such expenditure. They did it for the Cortina, though, but left the "small" sector to Toyota, Datsun and Mazda who had their wagon versions of the Corolla, 120Y and 808 (& later, the 323) respectively. Interestingly, though, Holden DID tackle that small wagon market with the Isuzu-based Gemini (also available as a van, too)

Great video, but no mention of the many editions of Citroen 2CV, probably just as well. Also, there were two final runout editions of the Ford Escort here in Australia in 1980/81 - one was the Denim Pack, a 1.6GL with you guessed it, denim upholstery - the other was the 2.0 Sprint Pack, a 2.0GL updated from the previous 2.0 Rally Pack which had similar spec as the Mk 2 Escort Mexico.

or the run-out versions of the Aussie Mini. Those LS Minis were great. I still have one of the 998cc engined LS Minis in my garage, waiting for me to restore it. It's that metallic blue with darker blue stripes, dark blue vinyl roof (though I have removed mine to fix up some small rust spots). It has all matching numbers and mostly rust-free and original, but because it isn't the 1275 engined model that came out in 1978, it will never be one of the truly sought after ones (although I would argue that the '77 non-1275 models actually gave more "luxury" and style as they had the extra driving lights, the vinyl roof, etc, but lacked the bigger engine and disk brakes of the '78 models.....

My Mum had a 1988 (phase 2) Pug 205 Open edition to “celebrate” Peugeot sponsoring Golf. We were a family of serial 205 owners in the early 90s and it was actually one of the nicest we ever had - the smooth and torquey late-model 80bhp 1.4 with (reliable) electronic choke, sweet 5 speed box and amazing ride quality without being too soft. Not sure how many were made but I only ever saw one other one. They were all white colour-coded, with a green high-quality tweed interior and green pinstripes externally. Apparently Peugeot couldn’t fit a golf-ball style gearknob because VW had patented it.

I think they must have just had a load of white shells left over and then got some one with some crayons to design the interior. Ford Australia had no issues moving the Escort Sundowner range here, downunder. In fact, there were "Sundowner" editions of the Transit and of the Falcon van, and intended to pick up on the whole "panel van" craze that had captured the young bloke brigade. Customising panel vans had become a real thing, with all kinds of "shaggin' wagons" lining the streets (often repleat with the bumber or window stickers that declared "if it's rockin' , don't bother knockin' !!!" and similar...... The problem for the Escort was that the internal dimensions were not quite long enough to have a fully supported mattress in the back, so the solution was to have a fold down flap and to use less rigid mattresses! The others I mentioned didn't have that same issue.

In Greece, we had special editions of regular cars perhaps more than any other country! The S2 106 rallye was sold with a Gti 16V engine, after the first 2 or so years of production, which was basically a Gti with rallye equipment, or rather lack of, wheels and decals. The N15 and N16 almera (aka Pulsar) were sold with an optional "challenge" package, with bespoke performance headers, a performace exhaust, firmed up suspension, a tune and some badges in the side plastic trim. The mk2 and mk3 Ibiza had a "top gun" trim, with OZ wheels, a JVC radio/cd, a Magnat amplifier and subwoofer, and a bespoke lip kit. The Daewoo Lanos had an "extreme" trim, that included a tune, performance exhaust, Yokohama wheels and tires and ,optional, bilstein suspension. The Mk1 octavia was offered witha "GT193" trim, which was basically a 150hp base car with a full ABT bolt on kit. Interestingly, the GT193 was sold even after the Mk2 was introduced here, as a cheaper "VRS" sporty family saloon option. Finally, and most imperssively, the GD (2nd gen) subaru impreza 1.6 was offered with a turbo kit! The Greek dealers would put low compression pistons, a new ecu, bigger brakes and a sporty lip kit with a wing, creating "the poor man's WRX" with about 180hp. These cars would later become known for really poor realiability, due to the mostly stock 95hp engines not being able to support the extra torque...

Up until 2010,when the recession really hit us, hill climb races and rally in general was the 2nd most popular sport (after football), and still today there are at least 2 races for every mountain in Greece. We even have an F1 circuit, that was sadly never used, due to bad financial decisions...

Australia had some shockers. Mitsubishi had the "Colt 45" in the early '80s, which is rather funny considering Australians aren't in to gun much. Nissan had the "Reebok" edition of the Pulsar(Sunny) hatch back. Holden had special edition of the Suzuki Swift called the Barina "Sportsgirl", which was a fashion retailer of the time. But we also had some practicle special edtions, Holden had the Vacationer edition of their Kingswood and Commodore family cars, which included the 4.2L V8, automatic transmission, power steering, air conditioning, cloth seats and roof racks in the wagons. Ford had the family edition of the Falcon which had two tone paint, air conditioning, power steering, automatic transmission and the "centerfold" front seat which made them a 6 seater. Toyota also had the "Getaway" editions of the Camry and Tarago(Previa/Estima) which was basically metallic paint and air conditioning.

With respect, although the 205 Junior originally started out as a limited edition, after the launch of the 106 and 306, the 205 range was reduced as the model was phased out. By 1994 there were only two specs available, The Junior (with denim interior) and the higher spec Spectre. This reflected the Mini, the Mayfair had also been a limited edition, but sold so well it became a regular model and replaced the HLE. It is also the reason why Austin Rover named many of the limited editions after London boroughs, Park Lane, Piccadilly and Chelsea, with specs either above or below the Mayfair.
@full-service-history
@full-service-history Год назад
Oh yes, the 205 Junior continued in the same manner as the Clio Campus. When I included it in the script for this video, I forgot that it ended up as a trim level! @@full-service-history I think PSA used the name Spectre after the old Humber model, which they must have owned the rights to after swallowing up Chrysler Europe (nee Rootes in the UK). When I was at uni I had a friend who drove a mk5 Escort of some special edition. There was various nonsense her dad convinced her about what made it ‘special’ but its main party piece was a rear spoiler. Which I’m sure probably all mk3-6 special edition Escorts had - but in her eyes was really unique and made it a truly sought after Escort. Anyway, one night we were all out at a bar and she was getting chatted up by a lad who seemed to absolutely lose his nut over her car being an Escort, ‘the one with the spoiler’ The rest of us realised he must have thought it was an Escort RS Cosworth and had grown weary of her constantly banging on about this bloody car by this point - so we were weren’t so annoyed that this interaction had given credence to her delusion that the Escort ‘shite edition’ or whatever it was called was actually a highly regarded car… It was more the fact that this lad seemed to think someone would drive an Escort RS Cosworth an yet refer to it as ‘the one with the spoiler’ 🤣

Valiant / Chrysler fired back with the drifter van and Ute's. Ford retaliated with the facon, escort, transit ( and even an F100 could be special ordered from dealers with sundowner motif) The 2.0 litre manual escorts seriously motored and handled well, but lacked the nessesary shag, surf, shag, cruze, shag, get stoned and crash out on a beach for a dawn patrol surf that the big vans became synonymous with.
