Dave Greenfield died on 3 May 2020, aged 71. He had been diagnosed with SARS-CoV-2 infection on 26 April 2020, a week before his death, during an extended hospital stay for heart-related problems. He is survived by his wife, Pam. Upon news of his death, several current and former members of the Stranglers eulogized him on social media. These included Hugh Cornwell, lead vocalist on their biggest hit, "Golden Brown", who tweeted, "He was the difference between the Stranglers and every other punk band. His musical skill and gentle nature gave an interesting twist to the band. He should be remembered as the man who gave the world the music of 'Golden Brown.'"
Had to travel to scotland with my my dad to identify my little brother after a car accident in scotland... the most painful time of my life... in the car on the way home ... 96 Tears! ... thanks for the journey stranglers
I'm so sorry you had to go through this... I hope you're doing better these days... I send you a big hug and much love ❤ and R.I.P. to your little brother, you'll see him again one day ❤
They all look so young ...even Hugh !! Lots of tears for Jet and Dave . Saw these guys many times in Sydney Australia...met 'em a couple of times....smoked a joint with JJB --he was on stage playing at the time and never missed a beat ! What an honour to have had these guys in my world since the late 70's. I've had the hugest long distance crush on JJB for many decades....but really love ALL of them.
@@UnremarkableMarx I think it's clear by the use of the word "nailed" that Corby was aware that this was a cover version. The original version was a well known hit.
Saw Dave once in the Red Lion pub in Barnet, North London, he was my idol, his magical hands played out some stunning chunes. The band are a shadow of what they were without him and Hugh too. Virtually as good as the original by Question Mark and the Mysterians. Crying 96 thousand tears for Mr Greenfield, what a musician and a gent.
Too many teardrops for one heart to be crying Too many teardrops for one heart to carry on You're way on top now since you left me You're always laughing way down at me But watch out now I'm gonna get down We'll be together for just a little while And then I'm gonna put you way down here And you'll start crying 96 tears Cry, you're gonna cry And when the sun comes up I'll be on top You'll be right down there looking up I'm gonna get to you but I know now You're gonna cry 96 tears You're gonna cry 96 tears You're gonna cry 96 tears You're gonna cry 96 tears You're gonna cry, cry, cry, cry now You're gonna cry, cry, cry, cry now Too many teardrops, all night long Too many teardrops Cry, cry, cry, cry now You're gonna cry, cry, cry, cry now 96 tears All night long now You're gonna cry, cry, cry, cry now 96 tears Cry, cry, cry now 96 tears Cry, cry, cry now 96 tears You're gonna cry 96 tears You're gonna cry 96 tears You're gonna cry, cry, cry, cry now You're gonna cry, cry, cry, cry now You're gonna cry, cry, cry, cry now
Yes , but Dave did have a underlying heart condition that's why he was in hospital ,hence why he probably caught the virus, hence why anyone of his age could die of flu ... R .I.P Dave Greenfield keyboardist extrordanaire alongside JJ burnel the sound of The Stranglers 👍
@@DannyBoy-vs3gd They were saying that about everyone at the time my mrs mum was in hospital around then and all of a sudden she had it as well?...........bollocks.....they had to keep people isolated and they are government funded so to keep the funds coming in they had to name anyone that died or was sick as having covid to get funding....I don't blame them at all hospitals need to make $ and most patients wern't allowed in at the time........
Stranglers Stranglers Stranglers In 1978 my mate went punk and put a safety pun in his ear 👂 to the Stranglers music 🎶. He was in hospital for a month with sepsis. Ah, the Good Old Days ! Something Better Change !
The stranglers, one of my biggest inspirations as a musician. They were so varied and versatile in their music so many different titles, I actually never liked punkrock until I heard no more heroes and its genius orchestration! always the sun is my personal favorite, golden brown, such a great classic and great song with the genius harpsichord (into pop music. hell yeah) and now this, love this over the 60s original..... other songs by the stranglers I like very much: nice in niece, all day and all of the night which did GREAT to the kinks, etc.
I am a 57yr old rock n roll bass player. Never wanted to play keyboards. Always known they were necessary. Dave Greenfield and Richard Wright were always necessary.
I heard the original for the first time in years on Crime Story and looked it up. Never knew the stranglers did a version. Reminds me a bit of Inspiral carpets Saturn 5.
Great comment Carlo. I have many songs like you've mentioned, that reminds me of my Mother and Father. Simple memories are sometimes the best. Best wishes to you, your Dad and family. Greetings from SUNNY ENGLAND
@@darrenrobertw Hello Darrent, thanks for the comment and I totally agree with you. The best memories are sometimes the simplest and I really like to remember them with the songs that my father and mother used to listen to. And I always say, we are not looking for old songs, we are looking for golden memories. Greetings from Mexico brother;)
The Stranglers' version is practically equal to the original, the difference is the 1990 studio, which is modern in 24 years! But I like old songs, from ancient technology.
I only took until 2020 to get into 'The Stranglers'..... of course.after reading about the punch on between them vs The Clash and The Sex Pistols.... instant respect! 😎😎
A great cover of ? and the Mysterians' original version. However, the Stranglers did something very clever in this cover: following the shortened chorus, they added horns until the end of the song. What this does is add another level of sound to the song, giving the impression of 'sound coming out from everywhere imaginable', which is actually a superb idea. I can just imagine people dancing to this version. wow!
That's the point where the cover had a point. Otherwise its just a straight facsimile and nothing is brought to the table really. The record company probably wanted to release it as single with a video.
