I didn't know JJ was on the smack as well as Hugh. I saw Hugh's interview in which he talked of Shelley and Byron taking opium and how it gave him the urge from a creative perspective to try some. I can't claim such lofty reasons for trying it. Beyond being a curious sixteen-year-old with no real-life experience. Hindsight is a wonderful thing. Hehehe. I survived. We endure.
Sian Williams wasn't when just JJ and Baz went on Breakfast. She revealed to them that she went to a Stranglers gig when she was twelve years old. JJ was genuinely shocked that her parents allowed her to to that, it seemed to briefly derail him.
@@vc23 Indeed. Did not see your comment at the time for some reason- the alerts do not always work on You Tube. I believe he used to live near Tetbury, a very nice part of the world. He was integral to the band, and had an interesting, varied life before too.
When I was young was totally in love with JJ 25 years later met the band back stage and sat and talked to him 😊 Everything changed when a french accent did not happen. I told him how disappointed I was, then he did some poetry in French 🤪 anyway really nice lads......can't beat their music especially the older stuff
I've been following these guys for 37 years. Jet Black is 'The Stranglers'! Unfortunately at 78, and with some poor health, Jet has only been able to play parts of gigs, and not a full tour. He can't go on for ever, but his drumming style will.
Well said for the first sentence..then downhill from there FondleRoy. The 50-60 somethings were on-board with the Stranglers and made them what they are.. I don't care if they wear bunny slippers and towelling robes now, those people were me and many others like me in the day, with now suburban lives and teen/adult kids. How old are you..17? And yes Hugh Cornwell completed the Stramglers perfectly but he wasn't the whole band. PS: got my hair still and not too fat...
You're over 40 and you just used the term "tote" in lieu of totally and you're calling aged rockers sad? You may wanna check yourself there Lord fartingboy
+Lord F Pity as they have the Ruts DC supporting who are worth seeing. After seeing the embarrassing video that Hugh did for "Totem & Taboo" single I kinda gave up on him.
Thankfully got to see the Meninblack before the sad passing of Dave.Saw them in Manchester 2019 and I noticed he was drinking Stella throughout the whole gig and didn't look very well to be honest.Eventually died of Covid 19 officially but his heart problems were well publicised.Just glad I saw them for that one last time which was 30 years after seeing the band for the first time in Bridlington of all places..Thanks for the memories guys..Fly straight Dave..R.I.P x
These guys are true legends. Big shame Hugh Cornwell is no part of this outfit anymore. His trademark snarl was a major part of their sound. . Can imagine Burnell wants to keep performing, these days it's only him who's left from the original line up......Call your outfit something f-cking else.....maybe "Stragglers" or "Wranglers".......or "Bass Boy McNasty".....?
fun fact: my dad used to be great mates with baz's brother and my dad was a roadie for baz in his band before he joined the strangers, we got VIP tickets for them at a local festival and I've been to meals with him and his names dave aha
Firstly - hugely sad to hear about Dave Greenfield's passing yesterday. I recall watching this interview live at the time and it was awkward viewing. For some reason the BBC producers have always tended to short-change viewers and their most legendary guests by shoehorning them into what is essentially a 7 or 8 minute slot between the (local and national) headlines and the end of the programme. The presenters can't be blamed for that but they are more aware than anyone of the time constraints and Naga was wrong to ask the H question Topics like that should be not be just casually thrown out there and the reciprocating telling-off at the end was justified.
thing is hugh thought when he left they would fold big mistake they still have the big following that they had.40 yrs ago saw them at the roundhouse London sold out saw hugh the same year in a small theatre.which held 400 he never sold it out.bands baz warne is a great frontman and been there for many years and does a great job
BOLLOCKS Like saying, John Lennon has just left the Beattles And been replaced by Eric Clapton DOUBLE BOLLOCKS SON.............................................................
@@drexlspivey5828 Different reason altogether why Hugh Cornwell quit .The band had become creatively dead &.Burnel was the reason & no other reason why HC quit.
Truly incredible that Jet denies they were ever a Punk band. If it was not for their Punk association they would never have broken through like they did and enjoyed a long career.
Jet sounds like Pete Townshend here...hoping with his health problems he is staying extra safe. Yes, the interviewers are very average and good on J.J. for pointing out the spelling mistake, that's also very common on A.B.C. T.V. Australia, can't afford proof readers I suppose. R.I.P. Dave Greenfield.
The interview, as already commented on is ... naff. A probable cause being that it was a promotional interview for the new album and tour, but the focus switched back and forth from promotion to reminiscence and when an interesting strand/line of questioning came up, for example the use of heroin in experiments around creativity, the analysis was cut short. As always in these sort of things, not enough time to delve and interviewers without enough background info or time to pick up on the possibly more interesting strands that arise.
Paul Williams But he’s a very good musician who has bought millions of folks together. And his being French gave that country a certain credence to its people from folks in England who could well have been living with negative stereotypes gained from elders of my country. With JJ B s’ Martial Arts experiences I consider this to be a damn site more positive an influence to young folks than a hell of a lot of the vacuous and stupid celebrities available then and now. If you’re a Military person then I appreciate how his Deserting is seen as Dishonour but he did better than Trump for a start for at least turning up - and he doesn’t try to brainwash many people at being Patriotic when fat arse bigmouths like DT for instance couldn’t hack it for one day . There’s many more in positions of power and influence whom cut far less mustard than The Stranglers’ bass guitarist. ! If JJB nicked your missus then I understand your apparent hatred but otherwise I say give him and the band a break 👍
Too funny , I hate spelling mistakes myself , can't help it ... love JJ . I had hours of hanging around when they came to a little Canadian club for 2 days in the mid 90's . JJ , a personal childhood hero , couldn't have been better . It's been said you never want to meet your heroes etc , with JJ Burnel nothing could be further from the truth . A Top Bloke as they say . All of them , Superb Human Beings & one of the greatest bands ever , HUGE !!
Very intelligent band and so original…although they clearly took their influences and came up with something unique…Gospel according to is a great album as well
Norfolk Coast is also a fantastic Stranglers Album ... as are Hugh's Guily & Wired & many other Hugh songs are certainly Stranglers Songs . The Stranglers as a band with Paul had a few lean years indeed but the last 3 albums are great . The first with John Ellis is pretty good as well . There were and are some fantastic songs without Hugh & some fantastic Hugh Solo Songs as well obviously . The original band onlys people have missed out hugely , brain dead
