The straw that broke the camels back

I'm so tired of seeing people do the wrong things with horses. Yes, riding is our primary goal, but there are so many things to get established before. Teaching your horse cooperation is a great thing.
People wonder why it is that I can go out in my pasture & ride any of my horses at any time. No matter how long it has been that they haven't been ridden. It might be as long as 8-9 months, but I still don't have to worry. The ride will be great.

You remind me of an old cowboy i knew years back. He and his horse had the kind of relationship you have with yours. Its uncommon in the horse world, but truly the only way to go.

Learning so much from all your vids. Love the relaxed attitude, and principle of horse and human responsibilities. Good to see someone putting their knowledge out there for the greater good of the horse and trying to change stupid human attitude and behavior without getting bitter and angry. Great hoof trimming vids too - really helped with my 2 barefoot guys.

The slow consistent way is the fast way. Too many people go too fast & expect results that last & it can to a point but doesn't last. I gotta say Farriers have a tough job b/c many horse owners do not work w/ their horses feet or tell the whole truth about their horses temperament they created so in turn the horse suffers b/c of people rushing things. I really wish you could clone yourself b/c the horse world needs more people like you

Ground tying Bill? Drop the rope till they stand and understand your intention? You couldn't pay me enough to be a farrier! They couldn't pay you enough to make them important in their horses lives. You inspire me!
@HoofTech
@HoofTech 5 лет назад
No not ground tying. Not that ground tying is bad, but many horses have been trained to be submissive when in a halter & lead. Give the horse the freedom to choose, then you'll know the truth!

Amazing and important lesson! Every person that has to do with horses should learn to do this, not force the horse to do certain things, but gain his trust so he does it willingly and because he wants to. So, so important. Thank you! Also, I'm just gonna take a minute to appreciate this horses' beauty :)
@Tony27R

I think it takes an open mind, which is something alot of horse people aren't good at. They get in patterns, just like horses do, and don't readily so the consequences. To somebody who isn't indoctrinated with those patterns, it's so blatantly obvious that you communicate and cooperate with horses on a higher level (as in mental persuasion rather than physical control) than anyone else.

Sir, sorry, mr. Bill you are a man of pride an honesty. This horse shows exactly what his issue is, and he has you to translate for him. This is great work, and it so much pleases me to see somebody with a cowboy saddle who is not rude, rough or impolite to a horse. Somehow we do the same job, out of the same heart for the animal even living at the other side of the world. Your movie inspires me a lot, and it give a lot of respect. Great and please go on, and tell the world !

I have a question of sorts. My mother’s horse was severely abused to the point where he has these episodes when he gets really big eyed and it’s like he isn’t really even aware of anything other than fear and it happens randomly. He’s a really good horse and I would like to better understand and bring him out of these “episodes.” Thanks for your time and I honestly just found your videos and I already love them

It's amazing how calm he is when you've only been working with him for 3 weeks. Yes he was getting a bit testy when it came to putting the saddle on, but for the most part he seemed to calmly enjoy the attention. Great job and great video Bill!

I would love to see you do more videos like this. Some may see you just rambling on.... I watched you training that horse, the communication between the two of you, the subtleties of a weight shift and his response, him processing what you just told him. There were at least a dozen different requests, commands, and corrections. It is so hard to find someone who actually communicates with them like you do, who understands the use of body language and energy.

Had a farrier who couldn't trim a back foot on the mule I got last year... I guess I got it in my head that if a professional can't even pick his feet, how the heck can I? I worked on picking up his feet, but was afraid of the back legs because he is a big mule and very strong and seemed quite kicky with the farrier and would push me around a bit with his butt. He suggested working with a vet and sedating... We tried it, but After some thought and lameness with my horses I decided to try a different farrier. I don't like bailing on farriers, but my new farrier just picked up the foot and trimmed it. Now a couple months later, I'm picking out all of his feet regularly. We still are working out some kinks, but I'm so proud of how we have both improved. I am starting to get wary of people who want to sedate a horse who isn't behaving just how they want. Maybe it has its place but far too often suggested and used
