As a 31 year old I must say that I'm quite happy that I wasn't in this situation during my teenage years. Now I'm also struggling with phone and social media addiction and I cannot imagine how horrible it is to be influenced by this in the child- or teenagehood.

I´m 25 now, bought my first smartphone with my own money at 15 years old and right now i find it very difficult to not grab my phone every few seconds. Oftentimes when i ride the train, I stare at it just to seem inconspicious to the next person that moves their head up for a second

@@sergeantsilly5239 You should train yourself to be by your own. I think there's a lot to gain from that. I've realized what a massive pacifier my phone had turned into when exposed to any social discomfort so I decided to reject those unhealthy thoughts immediately. Now I only use my phone to listen to music when outside, but I've made a rule to only use it for important things otherwise it feels "rude" to people around me. Plus, using it usually gives you horrible posture which makes for very unflattering demeanor.

Same age man, absolutely. I often wonder about this myself. Used my phone plenty when I was 15-18 or so. It was all about being an mp3 player with you and your mates, texting and taking pics of teenage antics for me. Simple and essential, nothing else to pull your mind 20 different ways.

I feel the exact same, addiction is not the only reason I don't like using a smartphone. I don't like using one even for everyday things, like calls and text, or for utilities. It doesn't look like a phone, it is just a boring black rectangle and frankly to me it looks like an entertainment/consumption device. Let's be real here, what do we use our phones the most for? 5% of it, yes, that is calls and texts, and maybe calendar or notes, but the other 95% is entertainment and consumption of media.
@hamingnu6610
@hamingnu6610 11 месяцев назад
Definitely. It's hard to capture that feeling, but using the description "energy-sucking" or as an "addiction" really gets it right. We keep using it, we keep justifying our usage for it (and it doesn't help that most systems that revolve around middle-to-upper class lifestyles in middle to high-income countries are turning to total smartphone dependency), yet a lot of us feel lethargic after having used it. It's like if we went back to the 1920s and saw -co**aine- being shoved down our throats every morning like some sort of multivitamin (exaggeration, but nonetheless you get the point).

@@theliopleurodonthat's the biggest problem with dumbphones, they simply cannot replace smartphones. I've seen Kai Os phones costing slightly more than android go phones and due to their terrible battery life, dumb phones take an L on this one. On the most basic smartphone, you get. 1. Screenshot and Screen recording with high quality internal sound 2. Massive on board storage from 32gb to 256 gb expandable with micro SD card 3. Both micro USB and USB C support OTG 4. Wider screen 5. Notification shade with easy controls 6. Massive internal battery 7. Better connectivity 8. I ended up going with the CAT s22 Flip. It's not an actual dumb phone, but it's an old-style flip phone. It runs Android, touch screen, I can use all my apps for work if needed in a crunch, but the screen is too small to doom-scroll, trying to use a keyboard on the screen, even with swype is almost impossible, using a T9 keyboard works great for text messaging and notes, but not great for browser logins and such. So, I have found it to be an excellent bridge that has gotten me completely axed from my old, bad habbits. I can't believe how much time in the day it saves me. Even people at work - EVERYTHING is done through Teams (chat) and such. At first they were upset by it, then teased me about my 'old' phone, but now they just call me through the app if they really need me for something. So, especially for someone who needs a phone for work as well, I think something like the s22 is a great 'bridge phone' if not a good solution. Plus, if you're into chat and radio apps like Zello, EchoLink, Teamspeak, etc. - it has a PTT button built in :)

I loved using my Nokia 2780 flip. I don’t recall ever having any issues with the keyboard. I’ve experimented with the Light Phone II and am experimenting with the Unihertz Jelly 2e as well. Even though the Jelly 2e is actually a fully functional smartphone, it’s extremely small and because of it’s size it naturally doesn’t make you want to overuse it. I got it for it’s GPS cause the other phones GPS are so-so and I haven’t gotten a seperate car GPS sustem just yet. I don’t have any unnecessary apps on the Jelly 2e, so in many ways to me it functions the same as a feature/dumbphone does. Only my bank app, a non-streaming music player app, and a basic journal app. That’s it. So far, I’m liking it more than the other two. And if I am not mistaken, I believe they sell an international version. Try checking that one out. Also, have you seen Jose Brinones channel? He talks review of everything feature/dumbphone and even has a website where you can search up the perfect dumbphone for you by filtering your search based on features you are looking for in a phone. Because if all else fails, perhaps a phone that works best for you will eventually come out in the near future.

I am at the same point...I have/had a google pixel 4a which fell into a pot of boiling noodles(long story). So I had to search for a new one. It happend in March and I still cant find a new phone because the screens are way to big and if it has a small screen its way too expensive (I dont want to spend over 300€ on a phone). So as I also wanted to reduce my screen time I did a loooot of research and the only possible "dumbphone" which isnt too dumb is the Jelly Star 3. The small screen will reduce the screen time enormusly and you can make this small smartphone through settings to a dumb phone with workjing WhatsApp, GoogleMaps and Spotify, Public transport app, banking. BUT: I really like data secruity and Unihertz doesnt really update the system. So I feel kinda unsafe using such a phone...and it looks really ugly. But it has the best options for being a dumb phone and fitting in your pockets easily. *my pixel 4a still works but I dont have a phone or internet connection...only Wifi. That made me realise that I feel much better being outside and not thinking or checking about new messages. *It sucks is that I need a smartphone for mobile banking (paypal etc.) and public transport...so even if I use a dumbphone I still need a smartphone to do the other stuff.

@@Tiger-kq5rmI'd call that a benefit, but that's just my opinion. WhatsApp and Messenger, both owned by Facebook/Meta are the things that do not respect a person's right to privacy, and they also struggle to understand what European Union regulations are for. As for Punkt MP02, it has a Signal client called Pigeon. Signal is the most private & secure messaging solution, along with Telegram. A few years ago I even had WhatsApp actively using my microphone when my smartphone was idle - and this was during my work with various businesses. That day was an eye opener that not only Facebook sneakily collects bits of data about your private life, but they also may catch some company secrets just like that. Of course since that time, privacy controls in mobile operating systems grew to be better and more transparent, and hopefully the awareness of people is better.

Something I've done recently due to getting an iphone 12 pro when my parents upgrading and having features that allow me to contact them and air tag e.x.t is the driving force in not getting a dumbphone but instead iv'e put on very strict screentime limits Another tip / tactic that I see very little of but would recommend immensely is using the 'colour filter' to put the phone in black and white or just remove most of the colour making it looked washed out and a lot less bright. Works better than you may expect. Yet another tip for modern smartphones is to turn off tapping or lifting up to wake up and instead make it so you have to press the power button. - sounds silly but works in practice

I stuck with Nokia 230. I think it's concentration issues similar to ADHD made me completely scared of having a phone with so many things to do on a whim. And for the most part it's fine, since I'm not traveling much, and when I do I even prepared paper maps in the past to know where to go abroad. But every year it get more and more difficult to have a phone without Android / IOS, especially working in tech. There's a huge push to 2-factor auth with apps not available on Nokias KaiOS (available only on Android / IOS), so that leaves me to be the only person in the company to expect sms to work in 2-factor auth. I'm in Poland, so some of the dumb phones you've mentioned at the end are available here, but I would rather get CAT 22 flip, which obviously is not available in Europe at all. And it seems like CAT 22 flip is the only phone with Android, which is actively preventing you from using too much apps.

apps being preinstalled and not being able to be uninstalled or at least being difficult to uninstall is usually because the company who owns the app is subsidising the cost of the phone - that used to be the case all the time back in the day on dumbphones - no way to uninstall some game or some carrier specific stuff that you'd never use .

@@theliopleurodon exactly i don’t need a smartphone. Titan pocket sways more towards a smartphone than a dumbone. I don’t like texting, i don’t take pictures. I love this video so much because I literally am going through the same thing right now. It's crazy that people had this problem a year before and no one to this day has created a perfect dumb phone. I have a CAT S22 Flip atm. I don't hate the phone. It does its job. But like you said, it's not a dumb phone. It's definitely a smart phone... I'm really disappointed because I thought that it would help me spend less time on it; and it does compared to when I had an iPhone... but the scrolling on YT shorts still persists. I know it helps some people not be on it because of the small screen but I'm such an addict that the temptation is always there even on such a compact device. But personally I have never heard of the Nokia 8110. But when I looked it up I though it looked so cute!!!😂 I wouldn't even mind bringing a banana phone to college. at least its unique, dumb, and got style! The humiliation would be worth it. I'm totally contemplating purchasing that one atm.

The modern world has moved past the dumb phone. I'm 38 and grew up with dumb phones, the reason you can't get everything you want is because dumb phones were just for making calls and texting. Back in the naughties we use to carry a phone for calls, a discman for music, a camera for pics, a game boy for gaming etc a desktop pc for internet messaging ie ICQ or MSN messenger. Maps was a print out off your computer or a street directory. The smart phone has replaced all those items. People today are quite lucky to have smart phones. Problem is they're just too good.

Just the fact you cant decide which feature (dumb) phone you wanna buy to help you get off your smartphone, shows you really do need some assistance and there is no shame in seeking help. Smartphone addiction is just like any other addiction, you will not get off of it on your own, youre just throwing money and time away trying to find another phone to get away from your normal phone.

I think you specifically need to search for the term feature phone. Those are devices in a more traditional mobile phone factor that still feature modern tech like touchscreens and third party apps. The underlying system is often either KaiOS or Android. However, those devices are more popular in asia as far as I know. There is also an effort by peple to run Linux on some older phones in that form factor so they can be used for some modern things.

This might be too late but worth a try. I have been using the Jelly 2 for about 6 months now. It is not a dumbphone but it is. This is due to its incredibly small 3inch screen. It has all the features of a regular smartphone but its size it what makes it dumb as event if I can download youtube, tiktok or instagram. Its so small that I have to fight myself to use it for more than 5 minutes. Also, the keyboard. It works fine. I hands are big enough to grab a volleyball with one hand but my fingers are slim, I have had no issue with typing on the phone. On a really boring day like waiting in line for something I spent max 30 minutes looking at the screen and the rest of the days about 10 minutes. The battery last me for 2 days on the use of just 10 minutes of screen time. It also has bluetooth so I can connect my earbuds and they work fine too. This phone is everything that I was looking for in a dumbphone. The price might fight you off though, but I was confident enough to keep this one and sell my old one and get some gains too.

Basically a blackberry q10 clone in a rugged formfactor. The only reason I didn't stick with it was because the muscle memory from my blackberry 10 days meant I couldn't get used to the keyboard modifiers (shift, delete, tab) being on the top row.

As a person who had a dumbphone back in high school (when they were still called cellphones) and who has gone back to using them for about 4 years now, it's REALLY sad to see how t9 typing and keypads have gotten so much worse. Like, each of the two flip phones I used to have lasted YEARS, and I texted a LOT more than I do now. They keypads on phones now last me about 6 months of light use (Cat S22 included. The Sonim SP3 keyboard lasted over a year, but it too became impossible to type on and for $300 it should last at least a little longer...) And t9 is... well on the Cat S22 I was able to install a t9 keyboard app that worked great, but especially on the cheap made-in-china phones, the t9 is insanely bad. They generally don't have words like "I" or "I'm". Y'know, pretty important words for sending a quick text.

Currently in this situation. My chosen solution is to use a phone-sized eink android tablet (Boox Palma) as my phone. I tether it to my smartphone when I'm out and need data, and the smartphone just stays in my bag just to serve as a modem. This works for me because the low refresh rates and black/white screen on eink makes scroll apps unusable. There's also unlocked eink smartphones (for a bit more) that should work in the UK.

Light weight, just not sure if it has whatsapp. I think that is the deal breaker because they were meant to be text phones. You text, and you answer calls. I had that phone until 2017. It wasn't a flip phone. It slid to the side, showing the full keyboard. I hope you can get something like that. I am a computer engineering student and I think about this stuff a lot. Smartphone design, app design, addiction to phones/apps, and general philosophy of technology are all things I am drawn towards. I want to make something new that is considerate of the current state of things. What do you think about a phone that just doesnt have an app store? It would still have a web browser, so things like maps, messaging, music streaming could be accessible. However, this way the services are kind of "further away" than traditional apps are right now. Mobile social sites like tiktok tend to be more clunky and would be more of a chore to stay on while on mobile, but the essentials could still be accessible.

haha this video speaks to me on a personal level. i had a nokia 3310 (the newer one) for a bit and i managed to get a lot out of it for what it was. i figured out how to put music on it and sideload some old java games and it did me wonders. it was mostly just an mp3 player to me, but that's all i really needed since i don't feel the need to get in touch with people unless it's for emergencies. that phone helped me become a whole lot more lenient with phone usage, and even on the iphone that i have now i'm using it in the same way, mostly for music. if anyone is struggling with their phone usage, my advice would be to turn all your notifications off, besides a few crucial contacts for calls and texts. notifications are annoying and serve no other purpose than to suck you in to an app to spend hours doomscrolling and just isn't needed. you need to be in control of your phone and not the other way round, and doing this, in my opinion, ia a great first step in achieving that. great video. i feel your pain fr but if i were to recommend any phone it would be that particular nokia.
