Those one-Side-open- Tunnels we call them "Galerie". they are in Places that just by Terrain wouldn't call for a Tunnel, but the Road needs to be protected from frequent Avalanches or Rock/Mudslides and they are also found on many Railroadlines. Avalanches and Slides can just go over them without ruining the Road/Railroad everytime they occur. I've heard Canadians calling them Snowsheds, but I'm swiss, so I don't know if that Name is used in all english speaking Places.... Greetings from Switzerland.
@@gonetouring you're welcome :) For the bumpiness, well there's not much that can be done. the Mountains are in constant Movement, in Winter there's Snow for a long time, Rockfalls or Rocks that are moved by the Snow, Meltingwater that gets into Cracks formed by the moving Mountains... that's the natural Side of it. Those Passroads don't serve any real Purpose anymore nowadays where there are Tunnels under the Alps with fast and easy all Year round open Roads... History, Tourism, alpine farming and Hydropower (Grimsel) still use them to a small Degree. It's way too expensive to repair them to absolute Perfection, just to be bombed by Avalanches and Stones again most of the Year. They aren't important and used enough anymore to justify huge renewing Projects. Plus the Bumpiness slows down Motorists considerably, which helps reducing the huge yearly Number of fatal Accidents on those Stretches. That's why there are so many "SLOW DOWN" Signs posted along the Routes...
