Nestled at the base of Black Elk Peak, formerly Harney Peak, and surrounded by impressive rounded rock formations and ponderosa pine trees. Rich in natural beauty, Sylvan Lake is considered the crown jewel of Custer State Park in South Dakota. It certainly is the most recognizable of the five lakes in Custer State Park or of any of the lakes located in the Black Hills. It was created in 1881 when Theodore Reder built a dam across Sunday Gulch Creek.
There are several trailheads at Sylvan Lake that lead to an intricate circuit of lovely trails. Some of the finest trails lead from Sylvan Lake to the peak, including the challenging Harney Peak Trail and the more moderate Sunday Gulch Trail. It is a stunning spot to go hiking. It is a relaxing place to go fishing, swimming, sun bathing, boating or to just sit back and enjoy the view during a warm afternoon picnic Sylvan Lake is a popular starting point for excursions to Black Elk Peak and The Needles.
The location was featured in the Nicolas Cage movie "National Treasure 2: Book of Secrets."
