Think of everything that you can possibly blame a loss on, from injuries to poor officiating on the part of the referees to bad weather conditions. I promise you, no excuse is as stupid as the one that Jerry Glanville said following an embarrassing defeat by his Atlanta Falcons against the Phoenix Cardinals during week 8 of the 1991 season. This is the story behind the stupidest controversy in the history of the Falcons, and perhaps the stupidest moment of Jerry Glanville's entire career

With regards to Brett Favre, Favre himself understood why the Falcons traded him and owned up to his issues when he was on the Falcons--it was under Holmgren's tutelage that he turned into a good QB, and it also helped that the trade was a wakeup call for Brett to clean up his act, too. Plus, Glanville, IIRC, didn't want Brett Favre with the draft pick--that couldn't have helped... Glanville can be blamed for a LOT of stupid stuff, but trading Favre isn't one of them--it's more of a "it looked like a good idea at the time" trade...

As long as you're talking about Glanville and his lunacy, there is a particular game I'd like to see immortalized (notes below are from memory so details may have drifted over time). October 18, 1992. The Falcons come to Candlestick Park to face the 49ers. The 49ers are coming off their worst year in a decade, and are rebuilding. The Falcons beat every team in California in 1991, and a trophy maker in Atlanta gifted Glanville with a garish, 5 foot tall, "Champions of California" trophy, which he brought along, and, I kid you not, parked it on the Falcons sideline. This did not set well with the 49ers. The team found out about the trophy while they were still in the locker room before the game, and came out to play angry. They proceeded to take their bad mood out on the Falcons to the tune of 56-17. From what I remember, the trophy was abandoned on the sideline after the game. In all my years watching NFL games, that's the most NOT IN MY HOUSE game I can ever remember.

This is funny to me since I work at a high-end hotel resort (surrounded by down-to-earth workers, and mostly fun guests), but really, the 1991 Falcons were as unsound a 10-6 team could be. They were inexplicably good, considering that they didn't run the ball much, couldn't stop the run, turned the ball over too much (when Miller threw 4 picks in both Kansas City & Washington, how 'bout those hotels?), didn't have a strong pass rush, and could get burned on pass defense. On the plus side, their special teams were top notch, their defense made big plays, they could run the ball well when they actually ran, and the Falcons passing game had Andre Rison + Michael Haynes, so when Miller got hot great things happened with that. A true Wild Card team.

The 91 Falcons beating a good team only to lose to a bad team. This described the Oilers to a tee in 88 and 89 under Glanville. These were some very talented teams. One week, they would play like the Super Bowl favorites. Other weeks, a letdown. Glanville held them back and we were glad to get rid of them. Unfortunately Jack Pardee was no Bill Belichick.
