Funny how the pod is so durable that it can take re-entry, ricocheting off a mountainside, etc., while inside the ship it immediately explodes simply from derailing.

I think an escape pod should have manuvering thrusters, even if it's just an extra tank of compressed air with a vectorable nozzle. No one wants to spend their last hour on an obvious collision course with a large fragment of their ship, and be entirely unable to even slightly adjust their trajectory.
@cgi2002
@cgi2002 4 года назад
Low end maneuverability in an escape pod makes sense, you want to be able to avoid debris, and manuver to a rendezvous location with other pods making recovery easier. Full drive systems tho, at that point it's not an escape pod but an auxiliary craft, or it may as well be.
@Nostripe361
@Nostripe361 4 года назад
@@RandomNameLastName811 I would also like to add that the thrusters could be used to escape a combat zone. You don't want to be stuck in the crossfire between two big fleets if your ship is taken out early in the fight and lets not forget that some species may be willing to attack escape pods for one reason or another. Also it makes retrieval easier if the rescue ship does not need to go into the debris field to pick you up.

cgi2002 full drive systems make sense cause u may have to get away quickly from the ship if the reactor is about to explode and or to land on a planet. If it’s in the middle of a space battle u may have a better chance on the ground or rescue could take longer then the pod has the air supply or power for.
@cgi2002
@cgi2002 4 года назад
@@ONEIL311 oh i agree, but at that point, you may aswell make your "escape pod" into a small scale ship of its own, something akin to a star trek shuttle pod. Drive systems are nice, but you need more. Communications if you want rescuing anytime in the future. Sensors if you plan to navigate to a planet, and to find out if its habitable. Shields (if the universe has them), as you may as you said, be in a battlefield or have to survive what killed your ship originally. FTL drives realistically, space is big, and very empty, the chances of finding a livable planet are tiny to begin with, and without FTL it could take months or even years to reach some place habitable. Essentially, as this point, you want a second entire ship if you plan to live long enough to be rescued, or even better, rescue yourself. An escape pod without this onboard only makes sense if your in friendly space that's well traveled, or traveling as part of a larger group that can rapidly lend aid.

@casbot71
@casbot71 4 года назад
*It gets worse, you missed something…* When the escape pod rams through the outer door and exits the ship - it _creates a hole in the ship_ that leads back to the escape pod room and depressurises the ship. Imagine if a escape pod/sled was deployed when the ship wasn't damaged? Next thing the ship is venting atmosphere through the tunnel the pod flew down. And that's a pretty big room so a lot of force is going to be created by that. Anyone on the wrong side of a closing pressure door is going to be flung down that tunnel (probably severely concussed by impacts on the way) and shot out at a considerable velocity as that tunnel with the large room behind is going to be like a potato gun. Large air chamber, small diameter exit on long tube. And if during an actual emergency the pressure doors malfunction (or get overridden by officers trying to reach the pods), then the whole ship is going to vent into space. Even if it wasn't a ship destroying calamity, just a medium level emergency or _a false alarm._
@icecold9511

I don't think they'll be worried about the concussion. Explosive decompression.
@supremeownage8995

"Why not just have a box on a decoupler that just gets let go of?" Probably because some amount of impulse is required so that the pod doesn't sit right on the big ship that is being shot at by the enemy and/or is about to blow up dramatically when the fuel or magazines burn.
@iqbalindaryono8984

If walle taught me anything is that high pressure area wants to equalize with low pressure area. And if I recall correctly space is basically empty which equates to a low pressure area.
@tripleb5197
@tripleb5197 3 года назад
True, but it's the same point he made in the Star Wars bombers video: the escape pod would presumably be let go of within the artificial gravity of the ship, and when it enters zero-g it would maintain its momentum, therefore (theoretically) not needing engines. I'd argue a small engine would be alright though, since it would make sense to want to get a little far away from a ship that can violently explode.
@Shadow_Hawk_Streaming

But a mechanical launch system would have been just as capable if not more efficient than a rocket burn to get free of the ship
@rileycorrigan5593
@rileycorrigan5593 3 года назад
You would probably also want the small amount of impulse to slow the pod down after it gets far enough away. Otherwise the day or two it might take for a rescue could scatter the pods way too far out.

@@iqbalindaryono8984 Remember that only water and gas take the shape of their container, and that only gas will expand to do so. So air will rush out of a ship to expand into space, but water and metal will just stay in the same place until the ship itself moves. Also space isn't so much low pressure as lacking molecules near entirely, but both ways of thinking work.

@SpearM3064
@SpearM3064 4 года назад
Well, to be fair, Verhoeven left out a lot of stuff. For example, in the novels, the Mobile Infantry had better armour, like the M-1A4 power suit, M-1A5 engineer power suit, M-1A6 pathfinder power suit, and M-1C8 command suits, not to mention the M-4A1 Exosuit and M-8 Marauder. All you ever saw in the movie was the M-1F2 "Raider Armour", which was completely unpowered and not environmentally sealed. He also left out the Neodogs (uplifted canines) and XM-550 CHAS (robot infantry), and also the Firefox VSTOL gunship, GK-16 Gecko MLRS, and a lot of other advanced, powerful vehicles. A lot of advanced weaponry such as the SW-X28 "Bugbroom" Support Laser, SW-490 "Blizzard" Missile Pack, MW-206 "Derringer" Light Rotary Cannon, MW-268 "Firestorm" Missile System, MW-211 "Hail Mary" Mortar, SW-422 "Hellseed" Grenade Launcher, etc., was not even mentioned. In fact, aside from the escape pod and the starships, the only vehicles you saw were the Viking Landing Boat and one flyover by F-76 Thunderbolt TAC Fighters, and the only heavy weapons you saw were the MW-5050 "Twin-Fifty" autocannon. TL;DR: In the novels they had much more effective armour, weapons, and vehicles. Verhoeven deliberately used the least effective stuff, perhaps for budgetary reasons (as in, their entire CGI budget had been spent on the Arachnids) or perhaps because the movie was intended as a military satire.

I don't see how that would be the case after investing all that time and money in training them. The Mobile infantry in the book version anyway it's an elite unit made entirely of volunteers, maybe not the brittest people but well trained and well motivated. The mobile suits made them a "combined arms unit" all in one compact package jump capable armed with anything from knives up to small tactical nukes. The navy even more so i would say since they required higher IQ to enlist and technical expertise. The Halo escape pods you mentioned actually have a complex system for keeping the person alive when it impacts. The person needs to have enhancements done to them to allow for suspension and some other thing I forget the name of to happen in order to ensure the human body does not crush. Also, the pods do have a system for slowing their fall but it ejects the fins from it a short ways from the ground (for some reason? not sure why) so the final impact is not at terminal velocity. The system for this I believe is based on the Covenant drop pods, much like the Spartan Laser was developed as a result of studying Covenant energy weapons ans the outer shields on the Spartan Mjolnir armor is also based of studying the energy shields on covenant troops so who really knows what all is going on behind the scenes.
@colinator7813
@colinator7813 3 года назад
You are correct. The Drop Pods (SOEIVs for the official name) do have systems that slow the fall. These systems include a metal deployable drag chute braking system consisting of four flat metal fins that get deployed from the top to slow the fall. The second system is a set of thrusters used as a way to further slow it down and as a maneuvering aid. It can also be used to move the pod post-landing to a better/more secure location. Post-war variants have better systems do further slow the fall and protect their occupants.

I think there are 4 main things you must do while making a scape pod: 1 make it fast to access and launch, you don’t want to stay for too long in a spaceship that is being scrapped by guns in the middle of space. 2 make it compact, it shouldn’t occupy too much space and also you will need a lot of them, so they should be cheap to produce and small to also make sure they are hard to hit by enemy fire. 3 make sure that the pod has food, oxigen, water and anything else you need to stay alive for a while, as well as making sure it allows the person to leave the pod and enter freely in space, you don’t want to land on planets because 90% of them will kill you almost instantly. 4 make sure it has a radio or anything else that makes it easier for your people to find you, you don’t want to stay stranded in space for too long

I always have to wonder whether it's worth having escape pods at all in certain cases. A drop ship can offer similar, if not better survivability with it's greater defensive and offensive capabilities, better movement control, and what I'd imagine as greater capacity per ship. Escape pods seem to only exist to mask the fleeing crew in the wreckage, or maybe it's just to save the crew from the travel distance between the higher decks and the shipyard. Drop pods always facinate me as well. They aren't escape pods and serve as rapid deployment of single soldiers to a planets surface. The assumption is that if a ship can shoot down a drop ship with an entire squad, maybe they will miss a small personal drop pod. The impact should, and apparently does kill many hell jumpers apparently. My best guess on how they are suppose to work is that the pod is designed to take the impact, as well as divert the force away from the occupant, while somehow stopping the occupant from dying from the sudden stop in itself. In Halo I personally think it has to do with this gell that apparently coats Spartan armor. It's the reason that Chief survives the freefall in Halo 3. In ODST I believe they use similar tech in their armor, minus the shield and much of the more risky implants the Spartans undergo. The Gel though should be easily implemented. The reason hell jumpers do die though would have to then be because they lack metal coated bones like Spartans. So if the impact surpasses a certain forced, and or the pod doesn't deploy properly, the soldier risks death no matter what. Sorry for the long post I have a tendency to write and add to the original thought while still typing. Love Sci Fi tech but I like to try and think about in story excuses for why they are made in the way they are made.

I always like it when ships have a combination of escape pods and auxiliary vessels for use as lifeboats. So in the event they have to abandon ship, everyone gets into the nearest space worthy thing, and the lifeboats can later be used to retrieve drifting pods.

I loved the scene in ST where some ships had limped back to Ticonderoga but we're too damaged to dock for various reasons and had just come to rest on the station. Great concept and great CGI. It was all they could do to get back to the station

Actually I'm surprise you never brought up this what happen when a plasma torpedo hits a UNSC vessel as it will spread unless you vent the air to cut it out as we see the fire spread to the forward half of the Roger Young feeding by the air but given the damage likely unable to seal off the entire ship to keep air from feeding the fire

That escape room was probably a repurposed missile room. There were probably more pods stored fully fueled and ready to go along the walls or ceiling. Just imagine the fun when they start crashing onto the people bells from all the damage...

On the idea of having your escape pod have engines, maybe you want to make sure that you can move from the ship that is currently falling apart and exploding and not be right next to it. And the being close to the disaster for search and rescue to have an easier time, is made irrelevant due to emergency beacons broadcasting a signal that can be located. You don’t want to be right next to the disaster, you want to be a safe distance away to give you a better chance of survival, and to be safe for search and rescue teams to be able to pick you up. You don’t need to be able to de-orbit, just escape the issue.

Also with rockets you would want those to be able to escape when the power fails. An escape pod should be a completely self-contained system since in an emergancy you don't know what will work and what won't. It needs to do it's job without the assistance of any other parts.

The Earth government can fly thousands of massive spaceships faster than light. So, why not just fly a single one at the speed of light into the bug planet. The energy released would probably create a nuclear winter and wipe out all life on the planet. Job done with a single ship. Alternatively they could rig and asteroid a few miles across to hit the planet at a few hundred thousand miles per hour, again nuclear winter, job done. Film over and done in only 5 minutes.

well, the "bugs" were very good at BURROWING, so they could survive underground for a LONG time. in the original novel, someone said the the queen bugs hid so deep that even a "burrowing H-Bomb" might not be able to reach them!

@ The resultant nuclear winter would break the food chain on the planet and almost certainly kill all the larger life forms. The winter would probably last for years and the humans could reproduce the attack again and again, effectively leaving the planet in perpetual winter. This would result in the death of all life on the planet.

having engines of some kind does make a bit of sense, if only to steer around chunks of debris from a ship that's falling apart, and attempting to de-orbit, but the addition of a chute and heat shield would make more sense than a glass canopy. Love that you used the Spaceball-1 escape pod as a "better example"
@Gottaculat

The pods are definitely way too small, especially for a ship that size. One of the things I've learned playing survival mode in Space Engineers is managing ship mass (for a multitude of reasons), and having lots of 1 or 2 man escape pods makes little sense for a large crew compared to a larger escape pod that can fit say 10 to 20 people (though you never really need that many in Space Engineers), or on an even larger ship, you may want pods that can fit up to 50 people. The material needed to make a whole bunch of small containers is just gonna be more than if you make a larger container, and more material means more mass. More mass means less acceleration, less maneuverability, higher cost, and generally a larger profile presenting a larger target and requiring more added armor which in turn adds more mass. So you use more fuel, lose performance, and become an easier target when going with individual pods compared to larger pods. The only benefits of smaller pods is they are harder to hit (though not particularly if weapons are radar and computer targeted), there are more of them creating safety in numbers, and due to individually having less mass, it takes less force and distance to decelerate them. So on a small ship with only a few or a dozen crew, small escape pods make sense, but on a ship with thousands or more crew, large escape pods are far superior for evacuation. As for piloting such a craft, who's to say learning to pilot an escape pod isn't part of training? Anyone who works on an aircraft carrier, what's your input on that? Does the Navy train you to use a modern lifeboat and the deployment system, or are there people specifically trained to operate them, and you just have to hope they carry out their duties in the event of a catastrophe? Seems to me space ships would be managed very similarly to naval ships regarding training and the duties expected of you once aboard, so however lifeboats are handled today would probably be fairly similar to future space faring "navies."

An ocean life boat has left-right, forward-back. A space life pod would have to deal with orbits, reentry, or other complex navigation.

Maybe they hadn't counted on the ships being cut in half and most of the evacuees would be aboard the drop ships like the one used to pick up Rico Suave and his survivors.

I'd expect a space age escape pod to be fully automated, also, why would it need to make complex maneuvers as someone else claimed? just as any lifeboat, it protects you until someone picks you up.

I agree. There's 2 major points to escape pods that should always be respected: * there's no point to an escape pod having a propoulsion system other than small thrusters allowing it to manouver on orbit to avoid being hit by a major debree, * the most important part is the hull being able to withstand up to 10G, to protect the crew inside - the forces above that would kill the crew anyway so the escape pod may simply be destroyed and it doesn't matter.

I'd disagree on pods not having thrust, factoring out the silly notion of 'minimum safe distance' because ships aren't really made of explodium, you'd probably want some thrust to stabilize your orbit, if nothing else. There's no guarantee that your orbit is stable or circular after an emergency escape, you could also use thrust to have your lifeboats meet up post ejection or to avoid collisions with the unholy amount of debris created by a space battle. As for planetary landing, I'd also disagree on it being a wholly bad idea. Depending on what you're orbiting above, it might be better than floating in space with whatever realistically fits in a lifeboat. If nothing else, most regolith tends to have useable water content. Having the option to land is probably not bad overall, especially if you happen to eject into a sub-orbital trajectory you have no hope of pulling out of due to DV constraints. Speaking of under-sized/seated escape systems though, IMO the life-pods in subnautica are some of the best I've seen, barring that they only seat two each. There's at least room for 6, maybe more. But having RTGs and survival gear onboard is something a lot of life-boats seem to be missing in many Scifi franchises. How quickly can you realistically expect to be found in space? On the other-end, you have the escape pods in Trek, which are definitely over-engineered. Like hotel-rooms with every amenity you could want and trans-finite power and resources.

I remember a D20 where it mentioned escape pods came in two main varieties. First was the classic barrel. Had enough food and water for three people to last a week I think. The other was much bigger and deemed a "lifeboat" that had enough supplies for 10 people to last nearly a month and a decent sublight engine, so you could reach a planet so long as it wasn't on the far side of the system you were in.
