At the 1992 NFL Draft, the Philadelphia Eagles spent their second round pick on Alabama running back Siran Stacy. And after drafting him, head coach Rich Kotite had the genius idea to compare him to Marcus Allen, saying that their new running back was akin to the Hall of Famer. Spoiler alert- it did not work out

What, something stupid from Rich Kotite? I did not expect that! edit: Yeah the 1992 Draft sucked for the most part. The only guys who you could make a Hall of Fame claim for are Darren Woodson (said pick was one of the ones from the Herschel Walker trade I think) and Jason Hanson (this pick was passed through several times, but originated in the HW trade). But the low light of that draft was the Colts having the first two picks and (in hindsight) blowing them on Steve Emtman (1) and Quentin Coryatt (2)

Siran Stacy suffered unimaginable tragedy: On November 19, 2007, Stacy and his family were involved in a car accident in which six people were killed. Four of Stacy's children were killed in the accident, as well as his wife and the driver of the other car. Though severely injured, Stacy and one daughter survived the wreck. Think about losing 4 of your 5 children in the blink of an eye due to a reckless driver. Kind of makes the football part of his life seem unimportant.

@@Goji-eletienne Sad stuff. I have to admit that I didn’t completely understand just how profoundly horrible it must be for a parent to lose a child until I became a parent. So imagine losing the spouse at the same time as the 4 out 5 children. Without the having the spouse with whom to share the grief. Truly unimaginable. Maybe the one child surviving gave him a reason to live.

I was going to type in that Marcus was a second tier Hall of Famer like Riggins and Thurman Thomas and then you make a fantastic case that he belongs in the top tier with Barry Sanders and Jim Brown. Oh, and by the way, "Marcus Allen is an elite player, but I can't commit to him being our starting RB" - Al Davis, ca. 1987
@ConspiracyQueryDotNet
@ConspiracyQueryDotNet 5 месяцев назад
What happened in 1987 though? Oh yeah, the Raiders drafted a guy named Bo Jackson, who was probably the most freakishly athletic player in NFL history. Also of note is that in the five seasons between 1986-1990, Marcus Allen only averaged 3.6, 3.8, 3.7, 4.2 and 3.8 yards per carry. During that same time span (1987-1990), Bo Jackson averaged 6.8(!), 4.3, 5.5 and 5.6 yards per carry. And it only cost the Raiders a 7th round draft pick to get Bo.
@Goji-eletienne
@Goji-eletienne 5 месяцев назад
@@ConspiracyQueryDotNetto be fair, when you're a legit star player, who was "all in" and your teams owner aims to replace you with a part-time employee so as to diminish your career, and you STILL finish with Top 10 career numbers. That's the very definition of greatness by way of resilience. Mind you this, that I was a huge fan of the Bo Jackson hype train. He was worth every drool laced piece of commentary that his athleticism generated. But Marcus was cut in the direct mold of Walter Payton, in every way, from running style, undeniable will to win, and a sweet, fluid range of motion, that was a treasure to behold, because guys that lost ng and slender, are not supposed to hold up in the long-term. Marcus would've easily continued carving up the rest of the league if Bo never enters the picture, but his drop-off had more to do with play selection, and a spite for a troll of an owner.
@ConspiracyQueryDotNet
@ConspiracyQueryDotNet 5 месяцев назад
@Goji-eletienne Marcus was a great all-around back and authored maybe my favorite play of all-time (the cut back run against Washington in the Super Bowl), but as a runner I would put him in the 2nd tier and I think that's maybe even generous. In half his seasons he averaged less than 4.0 yards per carry. So, just in terms of rushing the ball, I wouldn't put him up there with Jim Brown, Payton, Sanders, AP, etc. More like around Curtis Martin, Ricky Watters, etc. But yeah he was a great all-around back. My point was though that getting someone like Bo Jackson as a 7th round draft pick (after he'd initially been a top overall pick), was such a coup, especially after it turned out he was legit and running over and away from defenses like no one had ever seen before, that I was definitely okay with him getting carries.

Yeah, think that was pointless, he was clearly comparing the style of runner, comparing somebody style to another’s isn’t comparing their quality, this is something that is proven more & more to go over Americans heads. In the real world of football (the one that they actually kick the ball around) people compare player free kicks style to David Beckham all the time, no one ever said they were as good as him, just that they take their free kick the same way, that’s all this comparison is & that 20 minutes of my life I won’t get back for a ‘none story’.

I'm typically a fan of OJG9's videos, and I would have loved a video focusing on how poor the 1992 draft class was, especially the Colt's having the first 2 picks of the draft. However, I think the premise of this video is either disingenuous or just missing the point. Coaches and draft pundits will often use the "College _Player Smith_ reminds me of _All-Pro Player Jones"_ phrasing as a way to give the average viewer/reader a general idea of the prospect as a player. To support my take, I'll just look at the media coverage of the 2024 draft: As a Commanders fan, I've heard multiple talking-head draft-experts on ESPN stating Jayden Daniels reminds them of Lamar Jackson. I don't believe that person is making a statement that that Jayden is as good as Lamar is; furthermore, I don't the average NFL fan believes it either. The best draft analysts, the ones that scout all season long, are trying to condense a 2-5 seasons of a player's film into a 90 second segment, and they often use pro-player comparisons, specifically using "player X reminds me of pro player Y" phrasing, to give the average viewer an idea of the player's relative size, playing style, & skill-set. I'm not a Richie Kotite apologist, as I've never been a fan of his. My personal opinion is the man was handed a top-3 defense all-time (in terms of talent - IMO), and the league's most dynamic QB, and managed to win a single wild-card game. However, I don't believe for a second that Kotite was trying to claim they found the second coming of Marcus Allen when he drafted Stacy in the second round. I'm pretty sure Kotite was saying that he saw Stacy as a guy that who played fast, changed direction quickly, and could catch the ball, etc., and the best way to explain this to the average NFL fan** prior to the days of the internet and before there was a network entirely devoted to the NFL, is to make a pro player comparison. I want to reiterate that I'm a fan of OJG9's videos, and he often makes great points, and in my opinion, has pretty insightful takes. I just disagree in how I perceive the intentions in which these comments are made. In no way did Kotite say that Stacy was "exactly like" Marcus Allen, and he also didn't state or insinuate that Stacy was as talented, as skilled, or as good as Marcus Allen. To piggy-back another analogy used in the video - if a coach were to come out and say "I was really impressed with Maye's understanding of the offense and his ability to audible at the line, he reminds me of Peyton Manning." *** That coach is not saying that Maye is going to be the next Peyton Manning, he is only stating that he saw Maye make good audibles on film, and related that to people's existing knowledge of Peyton Manning. **NOTE: I understand no one has ever accused Philly of having average NFL fans, but I think my point still stands. *** Yes, I understand this isn't a realistic comparison, and a knock on Maye was his inability to get out of bad plays pre-snap, but I'm just using it for example purposes.

I had a Siran Stacy card. I couldn't figure out who he was. The Eagles did get one good player out of the 1992 draft: 10th round cornerback Mark "Mighty Mouse" McMillian, who became a starter in his 2nd year and started five years in the NFL, three of those in Philly. Him being drafted in the 10th round was probably because he was 5'7" and 150 pounds. The second best player the Eagles drafted that year was probably Casey Weldon, who was a QB3. I had to stick up for McMillian though, he was a legitimate NFL player.

His NFL career didn’t work out like hundreds of other draftees.
