After the 1970 season, Baltimore Colts wide receiver Jimmy Orr announced that he was retiring following a lengthy and highly successful career in the NFL. And the Baltimore Colts and head coach Don McCafferty tried to convince him to come out of retirement in just about the stupidest and most insulting way possible... which you're not gonna believe because it was that dumb

Loved the video, the right corner of the end zone was known as Orrsville because he caught so many balls there

i met jimmy on an airplane when i was 12 years old flying across the country by myself. sometime in the middle of the flight i felt a tap on my shoulder, i turned around to see an older fella smiling and said put out your hand. as i put my hand out he plops a giant diamond encrusted ring into it that read "baltimore colts world champions 1970 he said i noticed your cowboys hat and figured youd get a kick out if this. i ended up chatting with him and his wife for the rest of the flight and when we were getting off the plane he handed me a buisness card that he had autographed and wrote a personalized message on. pretty cool encounter that has stayed with me all these years

Don" EASY RIDER" McCafferty.......was an assistant on offense for Weeb and Shula. But we all know Unitas himself ran the offense. Jimmy Orr was 1960s version of Brandon Stokley. His routes where insane good. He was a better yac guy then Stokley. I have told that to Brandon personally. He didn't even know who Orr was lol. Thank you for giving Jimmy Orr his just deserves. RIP Jimmy

My father grew up with and was Jimmy's best friend. Jimmy said he had just had enough with the nagging injuries, wanted to enjoy the rest of his life with family and friends, and wanted to play as much golf as possible.

Excellent video. All us Jets fans remember Jimmy Orr from Super Bowl III. It’s not believable that the Cowboys wanted him and the Colts made this pitch to him. I truly enjoy your channel

Absolutely despicable that the Colts would treat a player with Orr's service and performance with them like that! Disgusting! What did they expect him to do?

Considering that notorious cheapskate Carroll Rosenbloom owned the Colts at that time, you KNOW that super narcissistic idea originated with him.

Up until now I only knew Orr from being the receiver Morrall didn't see in Super Bowl III near the end of the first half on the flea flicker and instead threw his 3rd INT. That would have been an easy TD to knot the game at 7 at the half.

The Colts, Threw In, The, Psychological Towel, after, that play, they, only, "won," SB V, because, Tom Landry forgot that Roger Staubach, was, riding the bench.

PS Rentzel's last game in 1970 was against the Giants and he had a crucial drop on the final drive which could have put the Cowboys in FG range to tie the game. Giants ended up winning 23-20 after trailing 20-9 at one point. If NY won the division (which has been discussed in another video about a coin flip deciding the NFC WC), that win over the Cowboys at Yankee Stadium would have been the game that sealed the tiebreaker (Giants wound up 6-2 in NFC East compared to Dallas at 5-3 so if the Giants won that final game against the Rams instead of losing 31-3, Giants win on this tiebreaker).

@RobertJohnson-hq6jq Yeah, the way the vote, was, decided, was, reporters submitted their choice, with, five, minutes, left, in the, Fourth Quarter, so, it made the newspapers, incredibly, this, lasted, for, decades, luckily, this gaffe didn't, occur, twice.

Being a Colt fan i appreciated all of the contributions Jimmy gave to the game and the Colt organization...but it seems like to the novice fan Jimmy is only remembered by being wide open on the flea flicker play at the end of the first half of super bowl 3...everyone is the universe saw how wide open Jimmy was....all but Earl Morrall...

Don McCafferty is mentioned, but I strongly doubt that he was the primary force behind trying to coax Jimmy Orr out of retirement. It had to be general manager Don Klosterman and by extension owner Carroll Rosenbloom.

If he was retiring because he was not starting - he said how tough it was for him to be a back-up, this could have been a way to see if he wanted to continue playing where he could start. Of course a lot of that probably was not known or wasn’t covered reported back then.

That is NOT how you convince someone to come out of retirement, but Orr was pretty much cooked by the end of the 1970 season anyway. I'm sure there had to be someone else the Colts could've traded for a draft pick.

Yep maybe he might actually play until 50. Plus he doesn't have a kid I don't think.
