The Sümi Nagas are a major Naga ethnic Tribe inhabiting primarily in Zünheboto District( also known as 'The Land of Warriors'), parts of Niuland District and Kiphire District of Nagaland.
The Sumi Nagas are believed to have originated from the southern part of China and migrated to their present-day homeland in Nagaland, several centuries ago. According to legend, the Sumi Nagas followed a mythical bird called Zutovi, which led them to the region where they eventually settled.
The Sumis have two major festivals, Tuluni(which marks the end of sowing season) and Ahuna(which marks the end of harvest season).
The ancestral religion of the Sümis was the worship of nature. With the arrival of Baptist missionaries in the 20th century, like other Naga ethnic groups, today, Sümis are 99% Christians. Very few of them still practice animism.
Overall, They play an essential role in the diverse tapestry of cultures that make up the rich cultural heritage of Nagaland.
