Planet of the Apes was the first book I read and *enjoyed.* I was 12 or 13. It made a big impact on me. It showed me that books could be *fun* to read -- go figure! It was the first step on a lifelong journey of reading, so it holds a very important place for me. I enjoyed the movie, too, but I did not see it until much later. I should maybe pick up a copy someday and re-read it. I'm 62 now -- a bit distant from 13. Or maybe it's better to leave nostalgia untouched. Anyhow, thank you for the flashback to an old favorite.
Gosh I had forgotten it was book, nicely done Mike I am enjoying these Sunday Penguins :) Hope the Ape behind you doesn't give you a fright in the dark hahaha, pretty cool. Mark
Michael liked the Planet of the Apes film so much that when we adopted two kittens he insisted on naming one of them after the ape character Cornelius!
LoL. I had the old action figures, and play sets from the original Charlton Heston movie. A buddy of mine told me 2 read this.....I just never had. Now I want 2. Very good Video
Excellent review Michael! I just started 'The Marvelous Palace' by Boulle. My first foray into a Boulle novel. Glad to hear he's a talented writer! And great folio edition!
I have never read Planet of the Apes, but I guess I now know why I have never even see a copy in a bookstore before. Those original five films are classics, I remember watching for the first time. It was so many years ago, I would have no problem forgetting the films while going into the book. Haha.
French satire versus Hollywood sf adventure, which, oddly, did well on both sides of the exchange. Read Boulle's book long before I even saw one of the movies, so I was struck by the intense differences, but like you, Michael, I liked both.
I loved the movie as a kid. I’ve been wanting to read the book for a while now but have only seen fugly mass market editions with the Burton movie images staring me in the face on the cover. No thanks. That Folio edition looks gorgeous, though!
Signet published an American edition in 1964. A movie tie-in edition, but it contains an original translation based on the book, I believe. I think there was also a Vanguard hardcover edition from America published long ago (a book club edition?). But I could be wrong. In either case, you have inspired me to seek another copy to read.
I absolutely loved the original film. For me, the first sight of the gorilla on horseback after the chase through the cornfield is one of the great moments in cinematic history. But then, so is the Statue of Liberty shot near the end! 😉👍
The original film is very intelligent, the remake just dumb. Bouille wrote Bridge over the River Kwai too ! I didnt know that I just read his wiki entry 😉
I didn’t realize that there was a Penguin Classic edition of The Planet Of The Apes! I have my preferred edition though, the 3D Cover Vintage Edition. It is one of my favourite novels and film series. Your reading from it was glorious, like Laurence Olivier.
