The Sundial That Works 24 Hours A Day

tomscott.com - / tomscott - In Svalbard, in the Arctic Circle, there's a sundial that works 24 hours a day! Sort of. When it's sunny. Which it wasn't. Basically, don't rely on this for telling the time. CORRECTION: "solstice", not "equinox".

ehhorvath13 It's extreme in mid Europe - in winter, it's dark outside at around 6 pm, the sun comes up at 7:30-8:30 am. In summer, the sun's up until 10-30 pm and comes out at about 5 o'clock in the morning.

I'm currently in Longyearbyen (party because of your videos, an amazing place), went up to the sundial at about twenty to midnight and noticed something strange. Face palm "Of course! The sundial is an hour behind because of daylight savings!" Then realised. Hang on, what daylight are we saving when the sun doesn't set for 4 months!?

I visited Nome, Alaska in the summer one year, and the sun stayed up well past midnight. Even if it went below the horizon, it was never really completely dark. I ended up staying up very late and waking up super late too. The jet lag when coming back was awful. I couldn't go to sleep right away at night for a couple of days.

I'd be curious how it would affect a person, who has lived in a place such as this their entire lives, to move to a location where days are ~24 hours... Like, you hear about jet lag, but do people that live in this region have sleep cycles held only by time keeping devices?
@TheYuoree
@TheYuoree 9 лет назад
Weber588 o-o I was born and raised in Alaska (no longer live there though), and lived far enough north that we'd have the entire sun 24 hours a day, no sun 24 hours a day depending on the time of year. Your body and mind just kind of accepts it as normal for the most part, you get tired and sleep just like normal. Though I think the lack of sun is more of an issue, not sure about for other countries, but in the US Alaska has one of the highest suicide rates (it and Wyoming are generally the #1/#2) and it's been largely associated with lack of sun in the winter from what I remember reading.
@PetahSchwetah
@PetahSchwetah 9 лет назад
Yuoree Sweden also has one of the highest suicide rates... Some pople think it's the darkness
@LockeLulatsch
@LockeLulatsch 9 лет назад
Yuoree The Scandinavian countries also have relative high suicide rates. Also alcohol abuse is relatively common!
@LockeLulatsch
@LockeLulatsch 9 лет назад
***** Well, there are plenty of reasons why suicide is more common in some regions of the world than others, other than the lack of sunlight. Also wich country actually has the highest suicide rate is an information wich is next to impossible to obtain. Diffenrent sources will tell you very different things here.
@volundrfrey896
@volundrfrey896 9 лет назад
Petah Schwetah That's a myth, Sweden does not have a particular high suicide rate. It's below the US, France, Finland, Belgium and Austria to name but few. The thing about the darkness is an guess trying to explain a myth. People seem to be equally miserable in every climate, once they're used to it.

@Amphibiot
@Amphibiot 8 лет назад
+merc340sr I am Norwegian, so almost never-ending days in the summer, and almost never-ending nights in the winter is just part of our reality. You simply get used to it. In fact, the few times i have been to a country closer to the equator, (Florida being as far down south as i have been) seeing dark nights and bright days within the span of only 24 hours seems almost unnatural, knowing full well that i am really the "weird one".

Some Muslims assume the daylight hours of Mecca, others of the closest Muslim country to where they are.

Lololololol, I'm sorry Tom. But that is funny. If only because you walked all the way there, and are now walking back. That's like, "let's go to the mountains and play in the snow." You get there and the kids are Not Happy. There's no snow, no fun. So you drive back home....., and it starts to snow as you head down the mountain towards home.

"And the sun came out", after it was needed. Either God hates Tom or God has a weird sense of humour.

No no no no no no no... When the sun comes out, you've got to walk all the way back and shoot the video all over again.

I would hate that as I am really sensitive to light. If it is light outside or a lap is on in my room I wake up.
