I didn't think it very NICE for the Sunday River narrator to call the FP45 units an ugly duck! One of the most beautiful passenger locomotives ever made!!! Especially in the red and silver warbonnet!!!
The Super Chief and El Capitan were consolidated in later years except during the Christmas rush, but passengers could not move from El Capitan to Super Chief. Union Pacific allowed coach passengers to use the first class diner and lounge on the City of Los Angeles.
Chester Nimitz rode one of these cross country, en route to Hawaii, instead of flying. He was just placed in command of the Pacific fleet and needed time to rest and prepare for the impossible task ahead of him.
I personally have always felt that the FP45 was a gorgeous locomotive and wish the styling was more like them today. The P42's are hideous and the Siemens Charger locomotives coming in to replace them are even worse.
Kim Millard ikr those P42’s aren’t as reliable as they are said to be but tho F40’s didn’t crash or break down as much I think the P42’s have a worse wheel design
Rite GE NEEDS TO TAKE THAT SHIT BACK WHERE THEY GOT EM FROM!...I HATE AMTRAK NOW BECAUSE OF THE HIDEOUS GE TAKEOVER!...F40PH AND FP45 LOOKS BEST IN AMTRAK COLORS
I can't put a like on this one. "Ugly duck" FP45? The FP 45 was a handsome engine. Ugly Duck, that would adequately apply to today's Amtrak motors. Just my two cents. BarstowRick out.
