So Mario doesn’t wanna save the kingdom, he doesn’t wanna get with Peach. He wants to save his brother, it’s really that simple, and then later on he wants to save Brooklyn. Peach is the one with a crush on him.

EXACTLY! I don't understand how hard the concept is to grasp. If the movie is based on a cartoon, make it like the cartoon. If it's based on a book, make it like the book. If it's based on a videogame, MAKE IT LIKE THE VIDEOGAME! I like the Sonic movies, but even I wish they'd just animated them, and made them more like the games.

Luigi's mansion is an almost perfect sequel for this, especially as a key part of the games plot was that Mario gets captured *because* of his headstrong nature while Luigi's more cautious attitude allows him to prevail.

Would you settle for at least a Brooklyn NY accent? The original Super Mario cartoon series were based on that accent. It's only since Super Mario 64 when Nintendo decided to go with an exaggerated Italian/Mickey Mouse accent.

That would’ve got so redundant and cheesy. There’s literally nothing wrong with the film. People are just trying to find the dumbest reasons to tear it down. Meanwhile there was a standing ovation in the actual packed theater i watched it in and it’s the number 1 movie in the US

From a marketing standpoint, I now understand why Mario and Luigi are separated. Illumination is testing how audiences react to Luigi carrying scenes on his own. Psychology comes into play here. Last February had Charlie Day tell everyone that his son loves playing Luigi's Mansion and he's expressed his interest in an adaptation of it. Fast forward to this March and Day not only wants a Luigi movie but Chris Pratt talks about an NCU and specifically mentions Luigi's Mansion. When you add all the videos, comments, articles and posts about people being in favour of a Luigi movie, it's all but confirmed.

I think my thing with Sonic’s movies is that they sacrifice a lot of the game elements and how crazy Sonic’s world is in order to make it fit within the staples of live action/CGI hybrid movies you’ve seen before. It does it A LOT better than most of them but at the cost of not truly being able to just embrace the video gamey aspects that make Sonic fun. Mario just straight up goes for it and to me that’s more admirable. You got so much in one movie whereas Sonic went on a road trip to San Francisco in movie one and you had to wait until the sequel to get to the things you actually wanted to see. And even if they do execute those things quite well they can’t really push it AS much. You’re sometimes getting decent substitutes for what you’d see in the game rather than just the actual thing.

Saw it yesterday and it felt like the strongest start to a universe. They establish other kingdoms and Donkey Kong warrants a stand alone film as well as Luigi. I really felt like the film would have been stronger if they didn't split up Mario and Luigi. Mario was very early established as the type who would help Peach regardless of Luigi being in trouble and their chemistry was so strong at the start I wanted both to go through a sort of arch instead of just Mario. Luigi eventually got a single moment but that's it.

What struck me about the movie is that it not only knows it's a video game property it's proud of that. On one hand as a superfan like myself that makes for a really enjoyable ride, but as Corey outlined as a film it leans so hard into the references it kinda loses pace with itself. The movie has such a frenetic pace of next thing next thing NEXT THING that it takes almost no time to stop and breathe. So I had a lot of fun with the movie; critically I'd say it's maybe a seven. That's by no means bad and we know how easy it is to screw up game movies. So if this is a base they start from to do a sequel I will absolutely be there for that.

Exactly! The movie played like a teaser reel for things to come. That final battle where Mario and Luigi both touch the power up Star and beat the snot out of Bowser was a stand up and cheer moment for sure.

One of those people 30 years ago who never made the wait. Is Mario movie star himself- Bob Hoskins. And the live tv part of the animated Mario's cartoon- Capt Lou Albano. So a couple of Mario lives didn't get to see this movie done justice.

Plus, Luigi being the one kidnapped and who needs rescue makes sense when you remember that Mario actually has a long established emotional connection with his brother Luigi and not much of one with Princess Peach, who is for the most part a pretty stranger to him. What motivates Mario to even give a damn about the Mushroom Kingdom and Bowser is the kidnapping of Luigi. It'd a very good logical subvertation that does wonders in explaining personal stakes and motivation for Mario as a Protagonist.

Man I was 9yrs ol when the unspeakable movie can out and I'm still traumatized by it. I learned later on; that the original version was going to be more video game accurate visually but they opted out of that for the post apocalyptic look that a lot of early 90s movies were going for then.

I had a really good time with this movie. Jokes landed for me, I laughed out loud at the part between Donkey Kong and Mario speaking about their father's. Sure the movie went a bit 'Transformers' towards the end, with the non stop action. But overall, they did much more than I expected them too. Bowser was a highlight and Peach a badass.

I just came back from the theaters (04-18-23), and I really enjoyed the movie. I'm not a super hardcore fan, but I knew enough to catch a lot of the easter eggs etc. I didn't mind the action sequences. Then again, I'm not too hard to please unless the movie was just blatantly bad to begin with (like The Last Airbender for example).

The Super Mario Bros. Movie: I found the movie to be very entertaining and full of life. It is definitely a nice present to fans of Super Mario or anyone who aren't familiar with Super Mario. The colors of the film are really good and especially(SPOILER)the part with the Rainbow Roads and the characters are very likable, the story was great and it wasn't too long to a point where I get bored. Chris Pratt voicing Mario wasn't bad at all he actually did a better job than I was expecting and the internet REALLY owes him an apology. Overall 10/10 stars, Full Price. Definitely worth seeing again.

While it is a kids film in terms of pacing, there are a bunch of one liners that reference a larger world, a lot like A New Hope did. There's room to expand the lore of this version of Mario, and I'm here for that

Whenever I hear this film has too many easter eggs I kinda just scratch my head thinking "Is that a bad thing?" At this point I genuinely don't understand what people mean when they say that the film should "stand on it's own." It's motherfucking Mario. The idea that it wouldn't be stuffed head to toe with references just kinda doesn't make sense to me, and imo the version where they have no reliance on easter eggs sounds WAY more soulless than what we got. This is a film that fully embraces the video game-y nature of the franchise. So honestly, just sit back and have fun with it. Not everything needs to be a think piece.

I grew up with Mario and Nintendo and I've been a fan of the franchise since I was 8 years old and I'm still am today. I've already just seen the super Mario bros movie yesterday and must say without question, it is by far the most awesome film that I ever experienced since the 1993 live action, it was way better that it delivered exactly that was in the game franchise and it was epic. Screw the film critics, the film was amazing hands down. 🍄🌟

I think the most remarkable thing, beside the amazing looks and animation, is that they have made a story about the mechanics of a videogame. Not a reference, the whole plot rounds about how the games actually work, and that’s just brilliant and very clever for a videogame adaptation, because if you think about it Super Mario, as a videogame, it has not an engaging story because it doesn’t need it, it’s not like Zelda or other Nintendo videogames where the lore is much more rich or complex. So they have taken the right decision, to flesh out the world and to make how the games work the very main character.

Mark 29:22. "I NEED A HERO" is one of my all-time favorite television series theme songs, so I have yet to be tired of it. I do get annoyed, though, when it is played for someone that should be called a "heroine" not a "hero"! Last night, I told a woman and her family about how that series was prematurely cut short by the death of the lead actor. He didn't think that a blank could harm him, much less kill him! He was playing with one of the pistols in front of the cast and crew when he shot his head! 🤯

Sigh. In the video games, Peach is NOT always captured by Bowser. That's an assumption made by non fans with only a surface level familiarity with the games. As far back as Super Mario Bros. 2 she's literally a playable character. In Super Mario Brothers 3, you're not saving her either. Such a silly, imaginary complaint.

I don't know if you can count Super Mario 2 as an actual Mario game. That game is a re skin of another Japan exclusive game. In Mario 3 you do save Princess Peach. At first, the goal is travel to different worlds to transform the king back into their normal selves. However, once you beat world 7, you will get a message from Bowser saying that he kidnapped Peach and that you have to save her. That's why you go to world 8.

I don't mind Chris Prat. If they did hire the guy who voices Mario and Luigi, people who don't play games would not recognize his name. Which would lessen the curiosity of movie goers and casual fans.

I really liked it. My primary complaint was that it was too rushed. Probably would've worked better if they had stretched it out to a 2 hr runtime and spent a few more minutes exploring the locations and letting moments sit.

@@entertainingblackmanvideos7691 I assure you that's not true. If anyone would be complaining about that it would be people with little rowdy kids. I got there before the movie started, stayed through the credits, got to my car, looked at the clock and it was just so short. If they had taken the time to flesh certain scenes and locations out a BIT more, I promise you that most people would've been fine with it. It had that potential to be so engaging that you don't feel the length. I DID feel the length in that it was going by a little too quick.

With Peach being able to fight - that’s been a thing since Super Mario 2 in 1988 and most recently in Super Mario 3D World (2013) where she’s fully playable alongside Mario, Luigi, and Toad. So it’s actually not a feminist thing.

I think the movie was perfect, in a sense that it was what it wanted to be, a fun animated comedy action adventure movie. Every scene was either jokes and humor, action, or something to move the story along, it was entertaining musically and visually, and there was a lot of fan service. I appreciated how short it was as well, this is one of those movies that can see kids rewatchig over and over again. So in my opinion, it's a 10/10.

Im glad to hear your comments! I love this movie and like what Julian said I wish it was longer. Though I was find with the pacing, the journey could have been shown and they just walked pass everything. For Martin Im glad he had a fun time watching and Korey, I completely get it. I'm hoping the 2nd one puts in that story that makes it the film. Especially since this is the origin film. Nintendo and Illumination are going to be them always but I do hope they really add more to the stories. Though I still love them to have the Easter eggs and references.

For people that don’t know the reference from the commercial in the beginning of the movie it’s from the 1989 super Mario brothers super show I knew the accident wasn’t going to be that the whole movie ain’t no Way. and even in that old animated series, it was a NY Italian accent.

As a fan I think this movie is great, hits so many beats that I wanted to see translated to the big screen, and gives me hope for more fun movies based on Nintnedo in the future. I think most people who at least like Mario a little bit will find this movie decent, and I'd only call it mediocre from the perspective lf someone who doesn't care about the source material at all and judges it exclusively from what is presented on the screen; they may see it as a colorful adventure through a wacky world with little story or explaination, and I see how not everyone would be thrilled about that. But also, come on; who doesn't know Mario?

gotta disagree with yall about the pop songs though, that i need a hero actually kinda of fit the scene that was going on, plus mario is a character from the 80s, so hearing a 80s song in a mario movie to me just kinda fits. Even my gfs daughter started dancing when she heard that song and shes only like 7 lol

Honestly, the only thing I didn’t care for was all the pop songs. Two or three would have been fine, but there were at least six. Funny thing is, while you were talking about the direction with Mario's voice being better than making it more like the games, there is one particular set of voices I was really happy they didn't make true to the games, and that's the toads. Thank God they didn't make any of them sound like the games, because that voice is barely tolerable in small doses. Imagine a whole movie with that voice.

Fucked up thing I found out on twitter. They actually made remixed Mario and DK songs for all of the scenes with Pop songs and they all feel way better. It feels like Illumination made a choice that got past Nintendo. This Movie really feels like Illumination's worst traits got reined in, it still has them under it all.

Honestly I think the flimsy story works, because the characters were all pretty well put together and it sets up it's world really well. Which is important if they plan to expand the Mario world in movies. Mario has always been about style and execution more than rigorous storytelling. If a Zelda movie had this flimsy of a story, then I would be upset. But it's Mario. He helps Peach, loves his brother, and defeats Bowser. That's what he do.
